Strategic Alliances

On Saturday, January 26, Lakehill’s First Tech Challenge Robotics team, the Bionicles, completed in their second Qualifying Tournament in Ferris, Texas.

Teams compete with a randomly selected Alliance team, against two other teams in a total of five qualification matches. In Lakehill matches, the Bionicles’ robot, Thok, performed beautifully. During the thirty-second autonomous portion, Thok lowered from a Mars lander and parked on the crater. In the driver-controlled period, Thok worked with Lakehill's Alliance partners to score points by pushing minerals into the depot and then re-latching and raising back onto the lander. Throughout the first half of the day, the team found themselves in the top spot in the rankings, out of 27 teams. The Bionicles held that position until the fourth round, then regained ground in the last match to end up in the fourth spot overall.

The top four teams, including the Bionicles, became Alliance captains for the elimination matches, each choosing three teams for their alliance. The second-ranked Alliance team, 7172 Technical Difficulties from Plano, chose the Bionicles as their first Alliance member because the teams had worked well together in one of the qualification rounds. The top four Alliances competed in a tournament-style format, with the best of three advancing from each Alliance pair. Lakehill's second-seeded Alliance won their first two matches against the third seed, and made it to the final round against the number one team, 127 The Fighting Pickles out of Mansfield ISD.

After losing the the first match, the Lakehill Alliance had to win the next two matches to win the competition. In the end, the Bionicles and Technical Difficulties worked together to eke out a win against the top-rated alliance. Along the way to victory, Lakehill defeated top schools from around the Metroplex, including private schools like Jesuit and Alcuin, as well as public school power houses like DISD School of Science and Engineering, Plano, Frisco, and Allen.

Three to four teams advance to Super-Regional competition at each Qualification Tournament, according to criteria set out by FIRST, which includes winning the tournament or awards for team leadership and technical documentation. Because Lakehill's Alliance partner had already qualified in a previous tournament, the Bionicles were able to advance to the North Texas FTC Regional Chapionship, to be held at Wylie East High School on Saturday, February 23.

The team plans on adding more functionality to Thok, including object recognition and better control of minerals. The Bionicles, including coaches Jennifer Herta and Mitch Musselman, would like to thank the entire Lakehill community for their continued support.

State of Debate

Eight members of the Lakehill Upper School Debate team, sponsored by Justin Solonick and Kevin Cobb, participated in the 72nd Annual State Youth in Government Conference, held January 24-27, at the State Capitol in Austin, Texas. More than 1,000 students participated in the conference. 

 

Lakehill had four teams in State Affairs Forum, representing a variety of proposals. Seniors Greg Gillman and Justin Reed advanced to the second round with their proposal on banning the creation and owernship of 3D-printed firearms. Also advancing were seniors Katie Anne Eastus and Montgomery Rotellini, who presented a proposal on providing paid maternity and family leave. Seniors Ben Gillman and Kumail Imam, whose proposal focused on improving students’ mental health in schools, also advanced to the second round.

Freshman Harris Jones and Spencer Friesen presented a proposal on decreasing the rate of childhood and adolescent obesity in Texas.

Ben Gillman received Distinguished Delegate.

Winter Sports Celebrations

Lakehill put their school spirit on display at the All-School Pep Rally on January 28.

Basketball Players of the Day, sixth grader  Esther Neerman  and second grader  Aidan Deason, were recognized at the Pep Rally. They also spent time on the court with the teams at Monday night's games.

First grader  Link Esneault was featured as the Soccer Player of the Day at the Pep Rally. He will spend time on the field at the game on February 4. The coveted positions as Players of the Day are sold at Lakehill's Benefit Auction each year.

Toward the end of each basketball season, it is a Lakehill tradition to select students who are the basketball teams' number one fans. The Sweetheart is selected by the boys' basketball team, and the Beau is selected by the girls' basketball team.  Luke Jerome was announced as Basketball Beau and Tyler McCall as Sweetheart between between the basketball games on Monday night.

Sisteens Valentine's Day Carnation Sales

Sisteens are selling Valentine's Day carnations to benefit Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Orders will be accepted beginning January 28.

To order carnations with personalized messages, just complete the order form and turn in to Mrs. Badgett's box by February 8. Carnations will be delivered on Thursday, February 14, during Upper School class meetings and to first period teachers for Middle School.

Orders must include payment by check (made out to Lakehill Preparatory School) or exact cash. Contact Mrs. Badgett with any questions.

Food Drive for North Texas Food Bank

Community Connections is sponsoring a Food Drive through February 1, to support the North Texas Food Bank.

The North Texas Food Bank is working diligently to support the community during uncertain times. Despite the break in the shutdown, the financial burden for many federal workers and their families continues. 

Lakehill invites members of our community to donate items to meet the increased need.

Senior Spotlight

National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates 

In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents: 

NJHS Spotlight on Seniors

This week's senior: Kate Langley 

Kate Langley has attended Lakehill since the fifth grade and has developed a close

relationship with the school over the years. She says, “Not only does Lakehill welcome you from

the start, but they also encourage and support any and all endeavors you hope to pursue.” While

at Lakehill, Kate has participated in many activities, including theater. Kate has been stage

manager for many Lakehill productions and spends her summers volunteering at The Musical Theater Academy at Theatre Three with Mr. G.

During her high school career, Kate has been a member of the Science Olympiad team, Ambassadors, theater, and Eats and Theats. She has played Varsity Softball, and has served as Manager for the Varsity Girls Basketball team. She is also active this year as National Honor Society President, Senior Class Senator on Student Council, Ms. Ekstrom's Marketing Intern, and a member of Honor Council.

Of the many achievements and awards Kate has received while at Lakehill, she is most

proud of earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award - Gold Level - every year since sixth grade. This is an outstanding achievement because to earn this reward (as a person 16 to 25), one

must devote over 250 hours of service to their community each year.

Kate’s favorite class at Lakehill is Anatomy and Physiology because of how applicable it is to real life.

However, her favorite Lakehill memory came from AP Chemistry, when during a lab her group

accidentally burnt iodine gas, causing slight panic in the classroom. Maybe this memory is why

Kate plans on majoring in chemistry in college. She plans on staying involved in theater and is considering it as a double major. Kate has been accepted to Rhodes College, St.

Edward’s University, Trinity University, and Southern Methodist University, and is waiting on decisions from Kenyon College and Smith College.

Kate will miss the relationships she has formed with teachers, as well as the friendships she has made. She says that most of all she will miss the close environment and the daily greetings and conversations with students, teachers, and staff. However, Kate is looking forward to the diverse array of classes and classmates in college.

"Pursue what you love" is Kate’s advice to young Warriors. "While Lakehill offers a wide variety of activities, don’t feel pressured to do everything. Do what you enjoy.”

Sports Snippets

Middle School Soccer

The Middle School eighth grade soccer team beat Greenhill at home on January 29. Avery Owen opened up the scoring eight minutes into the game by kneeing a ball over the goalie on a pass from James McKinney. Max Byrd scored to make it 2-0, blasting a ball through their keeper's hands on a pass from Olivia Johnston. Seven minutes into the second half, Kayla Ristianto wove through the Greenhill defense, as she did all game long, and sent a ball to McKinney who took it to the edge of the 18-yard box and lofted it to the back post of the goal over their goalie. Samuel Rosen and Roman Gracia were strong on offense. Ristianto, Owen, McKinney, and Ethan Gaertner were solid in the midfield, and Byrd played great on offense. 

The Warriors play their last game on February 1, at home against Parish at 4:30 p.m.

The Middle School seventh grade soccer team beat HSAA 3-0 on January 28. 

Byrd scored early on a pass from Bella Pumpelly. HSAA kept Lakehill from scoring for the next 40 minutes of the game, until Johnston scored with a header on a corner kick served up by McKinney. Gaertner scored at the end of the game on a pass from Byrd. Jackson Cook was strong on defense; Vivek Patel was outstanding in the midfield; and Kellen Kahn did great in goal.

Varsity Soccer

The Varsity Soccer team lost 8-1 to Shelton on January 29. Junior Luka Varnes scored the lone goal on a breakaway. 

The Warriors take on Cristo Rey at First Baptist Academy on January 31, at 6:30 p.m. Lakehill then plays Dallas Lutheran at home on Friday, February 1, at 6:00 p.m. Senior members of the team will be honored before the game in the annual Senior Night Celebration. The Warriors are at home for their final game of the season on Monday, February 4. They will take on Tyler All Saints at 4:30 pm. First grader Link Esneault will be honored as the player for a day.

Varsity Boys Basketball

The Varsity Boys Basketball team hosted the Yavneh Academy Bulldogs on January 28. The Warriors lost, 72-40, in a game that was closer than the final score indicates. Lakehill was led by Ryan Henry, who had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals. The JV team also came up short against Yavneh, losing 36-32.

Both teams get back to action on Thursday, January 31, at Sherman Texoma Christian with the JV playing at 5:00 p.m. and Varsity at 7:30 p.m. The team's busy schedule continues on Saturday, February 2, with games against Dallas Lutheran at noon and 3:00 p.m. These games will be played at Dallas Covenant.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The Varsity Girls Basketball team lost a 50-49 heart-breaker to Yavneh, at home on January 28, on a last-second three-point basket by Yavneh. 

Lakehill was in control most of the game until a furious fourth-quarter comeback by Yavneh closed the gap. It was a great team effort by the Lady Warriors.

The Warriors were led in scoring by Hayden Yoss with 16 points. Krista Carlson scored 14, while Alanna Stern added 13 points and 16 rebounds. 

The Warriors travel to Sherman Texoma Christian on January 31, and play Dallas Lutheran (at Covenant) on February 2, at 1:30 p.m.

Middle School Girls Basketball

On January 24, the Middle School Girls (IAA) Basketball team suffered their first lost of the season. They were defeated by Zion Lutheran, 14-34. Taylor Lewis scored eight points, Victoria Bell scored four, and Taylor Allen scored two.

On January 23, the Middle School Girls Blue Team was defeated by Brighter Horizons Academy, 11-26. Sofia Bracken, Sydney Nguyen, Kate Marshall, and Emory Johnston scored three points each. 

Middle School Boys Basketball

On January 24, the Middle School Boys Basketball IAA team defetaed Ziobn Lutheran, 34-27. Hayden Bauer led the team with 17 points, and Jon Paul Maney added nine.

On January 28, the Middle School Boys teams claimed back-to-back victories against Garland Christian. The IAA team won, 42-34. Bauer led the team with 16 points. Maney scored 10 points, and Jack Wildham added six.

The Blue team racked up a solid 31-15 win. The team was paced by Austin Boothe with 12 points and Yussef Zidan with 10.

The IAA team is 16-0 and remains in first place heading into the final week of the regular season.

Lakehill eighth grade students will spend the morning attending classes and leaning more about the many opportunities in Lakehill's Upper School.

Upper School Day of Service

8:00 a.m. - noon 

All Upper School students should meet in the Auditorium at 8:00 a.m. for the Day of Service. Jeans and a Lakehill t-shirt are appropriate dress for the day. All students are required to wear closed-toe shoes.

Students will return to campus at noon and will be dismissed for the day.

Early Release Day/Staff Development

Lower School students will be released at 11:30 a.m. Middle and Upper School students will be released at noon. After-care is available with a  reservation.
