A pandemic won't stop Lakehill students
from serving the community.

Since Lakehill was founded, the heart and soul of the school’s mission has been to develop young people to live with integrity and to serve with compassion. Lakehill Headmaster Roger L. Perry has been leading this mission for 47 years, serving both the Lakehill and East Dallas community.
When COVID-19 hit the Dallas area, Lakehill students were committed to supporting the execution of Lakehill’s mission. However, considering the extenuating circumstances of COVID-19, students had to remain mindful of their activities and the potential impact on the Dallas community. Organizations like National Honor Society (NHS), National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), and Student Council have been meeting during the school year to determine how they can be creative and continue to make an impact.
Projects completed include but are not limited to:

Shoreline Spruce Up, White Rock Lake Adopt a Shoreline: One Saturday each month, all Lakehill students are invited to clean Lakehill’s adopted shoreline at White Rock Lake. Students meet at 9:00 am at the West Lawther and Chapel Hill parking lot. Join us on February 20.

Clothing Collection for Austin Street Shelter: For people experiencing homelessness, Austin Street Center has been a light of hope for over 37 years in the North Texas area. Lakehill students collected clothing and donated it to Austin Street Center this school year.

“Everything but the turkey” Canned Food Drive: During the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, Middle School students collected canned foods to be donated for those in need for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Parade of Gifts: Lower School students collected more gifts than ever before for Lakehill’s annual Holiday Parade which benefited underprivileged Dallas-area children. Collected toys, books, and games were donated to the Wilkinson Center and Hope Supply Company for delivery to homeless and low-income children just in time for the holidays. Additional gifts were supplied to the Community Partners of Dallas Rainbow Room. The Rainbow Room partners with Child Protective Services year-round to ensure that children and parents who are in need of protection have the clothes, food, and toys needed to reset and restart after a traumatic experience.
Currently, Upper School is working with White Rock Center of Hope for a Clothes, Cans, and Cloth Drive. To donate, students should bring items into school and place them in the proper donation bin. There are three donation locations: the Lower School entrance, the Middle School entrance, and the Main Entrance by the front desk. One box will be for clothes, linens, and coats, and the other box will be for canned items. For a specific list of needs, please click the button below.

NJHS Presents
The Class of 2021, Senior Spotlights

Douglas McKenzie has been at Lakehill for four years and is a member of the varsity basketball and tennis teams.
Douglas is an active member of the Student Council, the Pan American Student Forum (PASF), Drama, and Musical Theater. He received the 11th grade English award and the Drew Coryell scholarship during his time at Lakehill. His favorite class at Lakehill was geography during his freshman year. He loved having Dr. Solonick, whom Douglas says always made the class enjoyable. Outside of Lakehill, he enjoys fly fishing and volunteering with projects at his church.
Douglas plans to attend Texas Wesleyan University and play basketball, while majoring in Sports Management and Communication.
Douglas’ favorite Lakehill memory is filming a movie for Digital Production and having to use the roof to film a part of the movie. When walking back downstairs, Mr. Kidder came running up the stairs in a panic because of the loud noises on the roof. Douglas’ advice to younger Warriors is, ”Make the most of every opportunity Lakehill gives you and know they will support you no matter what.”

Cade Armstrong started his journey at Lakehill in the tenth grade. During his time, Cade participated in a variety of activities such as soccer, tennis, National Honor Society (NHS), the Pan American Student Forum (PASF), and the P.R.I.S.M. club. Outside of Lakehill, Cade volunteers at SPARK!, a nonprofit organization that helps children who have reading difficulties and aims to inspire children through immersive creative learning environments. For the last two summers, Cade has been an intern at AD Partners Structural Engineers, where he was able to learn about career paths that put his love of physics to good use.
Cade’s favorite class at Lakehill is AP Physics C: Mechanics, because the material is both challenging and fun. The class has allowed him to work at his own pace, which taught him how to effectively manage his time. Lakehill has provided a number of great memories for Cade, many of which come from being on the soccer team. From games and practices to just hanging out, Cade counts those moments as some of his best.
Cade has received many awards at Lakehill, including the Harvard Book Award, Academic All-State for Tennis, and a nomination for the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program. He has been accepted to Texas A&M University and Purdue University and has applied to The University of Texas. He plans to major in Aerospace Engineering.
Cade’s advice to all Warriors is, “Always ask any questions you have in class. Other people may have the same question, but not enough courage to ask it. So you could be helping other people, as well as yourself!”

Jason Dickerson Wins Spelling Bee! |
Lakehill students in grades four through eight participated in the annual spelling bee in the Charles J. Wyle Jr. Auditorium last week. Jason Dickerson won this year’s bee, spelling the word “corroborate.” Noah Kurian took second place and Rygel Farr finished third. Rygel went out on a tough “voracious” while Noah barely missed “touche.”
Lakehill’s 2021 spelling bee took place a little differently this year as contestants were live streamed to audience members in classrooms and at home.
“I have entered the contest every year since fourth grade and I was super nervous going into the competition,” said Jason. This year, there were twenty-one contestants. In order to win, Jason had to spell two words in a row correctly. “I studied the list quite a bit at home. My mom would read the words off and I would spell them back to her.”
Mrs. Julie Murgen was the moderator and followed the typical protocols for a spelling bee. Words are listed and called in order. “There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason that the words are listed the way they are,” said Mrs. Murgen.
“I am pretty excited about winning this year,” said Jason. “Noah and I stepped down off the stage and were able to celebrate with our friends as best we could. It was fun!”

Lakehill Welcomes
Mr. Thomas Cantu
|
Thomas Cantu joins the Lakehill staff this year as the Lower and Middle School Spanish teacher. Mr. Cantu attended The University of Alabama where he earned a B.A. in Spanish with a minor in Mathematics. A Dallas native, Mr. Cantu resides in Oak Cliff with his dog, She-Ra, and is very passionate about cycling. “I will be the one you see riding my bike to school each day,” said Mr. Cantu. “I ride my bike all over the metroplex, from Fort Worth to Plano and even to Midlothian. A friendly honk and wave is always welcome!”
Teaching for five years, Mr. Cantu most recently taught semi-private English and Spanish language classes to all ages and ESL courses to adults.”I have always wanted to make an impact on people’s lives and I have found that teaching is one of the best ways to achieve that goal.” Mr. Cantu coaches U4 soccer in the Oak Cliff neighborhood and has also spent time teaching other outdoor activities such as rock climbing.
“I’ve noticed that many of the staff have been here for quite some time, giving the students a great sense of stability,” said Mr. Cantu. As the Spanish teacher, one of his main goals for the year is to encourage students' curiosity and help them grow in the Spanish language. “I am looking forward to learning every student's name. When I counted, I have 150 to learn in all!”
When asked the best advice he had ever received, Mr. Cantu confidently said, “At the taqueria, order tacos with two tortillas. More food, same price.”
We are very excited to welcome him to the Lakehill community!

- You may include font and color options, the yearbook staff will do their best to fulfill these requests.
