Warriors at Home: Week 7
Lakehill teachers are going above and beyond this year as they continue to re-define Distance Learning to keep our students engaged and educated. While it's always important to recognize how much teachers matter, this year is especially significant. Lakehill teachers are working around the clock to move their teaching online and to support their students while we are apart. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4-8, 2020, and Lakehill students and families are showing their love in force.

On Tuesday, Lakehill celebrated seven educators who are celebrating milestone anniversaries at the school. Lakehill Headmaster Roger L. Perry is celebrating 45 years at Lakehill, 37 of them as Headmaster. "It is still easy for me to remember my early years at Lakehill," said Perry. "We had just over 20 teachers and held classes in spaces rented from Lakewood Baptist Church. I coached Middle School basketball (for a year) on an asphalt parking lot on the south side of the building. The thought of the amazing facilities we now own, on two campuses, encourages me to think of the thousands of people who have made them possible. Just like in the early days, our greatest asset continues to be the people of all ages, who help each of us make wonderful memories."

Joan Mayo and Scott Boles are being recognized for 35 years of service to the school. "Joan brought her love of languages to Lakehill 35 years ago, and continues to develop students who have a strong knowledge of Spanish and an appreciation for the culture," said Perry. "Scott has been inspiring Lakehill artists for 35 years, developing their creativity and an appreciation of art in every student he teaches, from beginner to advanced."
Julie Murugen and Rochelle Rasheed are being honored with 20 and 10 years of service, respectively.
Perry noted, "Julie brings the English language to life for her students, both in the classroom and on the stage with her creative, original plays. Rochelle sets high standards for her students and then brings all of her talents to help each student exceed those expectations."

Mark Guerra and Ellen Kufel are celebrating five years each. "Mark shares his love for theater and instills his passion in his students. His creativity and encouragement help our students shine on the stage. Ellen is a natural teacher with an amazing connection with her Middle School students. Each of her students comes to the next math level prepared and confident," Perry concluded.

The Class of 2021 created this video to let their teachers know how much they are missed and appreciated. Other students and classes shared photos, notes, and videos to let their teachers know they are appreciated and remembered.

Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-up
There is no organized Lakehill clean-up, but Dallas Park and Recreation Department (DPARD) is allowing For The Love of the Lake to make supplies available at their office (1152 N Buckner Blvd #123, Dallas, TX 75218) on May 9, for drive-through pick-up only, beginning at 8:00 a.m. While picking up trash in the park, you MUST practice physical distancing from anyone other than those living in your same household. Please wear your gloves at all times. Note the port-a-lets and water fountains around the lake are not currently in operation. Be sure to bring your own water. Please return the trash grabbers no later than noon.

Be A Neighbor
Being a good neighbor has never been more important. The Be a Neighbor campaign is looking for volunteers who are willing to help the nonprofits and community organizations that are on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis across Texas.
Robotics Activities
Are you ready for some awesome science experiments? The Upper School Robotics team wants to help.

Catapult marshmallows across the room, build a skyscraper, or see how many pennies you can fit in a boat. The Robotics team has put together these awesome projects and more in a collection of amazing STEM experiments you can do from your home (most of them using basic household items). The booklet includes the Robotics team's Distance Learning with Mata Nui series, a “Blast from the Past” section featuring all of their 2019-20 Projects, as well as robot-themed coloring sheets.

"These STEM experiments have been kid tested for fun and learning," says team member Anna Knickel .

Email pictures of your experiments and activities to be featured on social media or tag the team ( @ftc14904) on Instagram.

Check out the team on Instagram for more STEM experiments and weekly activities during Distance Learning. Visit Lakehill Bionicles and the FIRST Tech Challenge online for more information.
