The
Wave
January 10, 2020
Happy Friday to you! We had a great return to school and hit the ground running! We loved seeing everybody back and enjoyed hearing about all the amazing things our community did over the break! As we get settled back into school, here are some things coming up next week.

Midterms are next week - the term is going by quickly! Please be aware that our grade book program Chalk is frozen during the next week. This is a great time to check in with teachers and make sure that students are headed on the trajectory towards success!

Next week is also our winter round of MAP testing. We have been talking through testing strategies here at school and with your help at home, there is nothing but success ahead. A few discussion topics that may help are how to take a test slowly, reading all questions carefully and more than once if necessary, and what to do if you do not know an answer. A good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast are very helpful, too!

Reminders:
Next week is a 5-day week with an early release (12:00 noon) on Wednesday, January 15th.

We follow the WLWV district in case of a weather-related late start or closure. The long term forecast does show some potential inclement weather coming our way.

Compassion thought of the week: One of our 4th grade students said, “Compassion is easy. Just be nice to people.” I couldn’t have said it better. From our city to the world this advice would go along way. This weekend let’s focus on being nice!

Have a great weekend and we will see you all on Monday.

On January 21st-24th, we will be heading to the  North Clackamas Aquatic Center  for four days of PE fun in the pool. The curriculum includes obstacle courses, water polo, water basketball, relay races and of course, our favorite - the wave pool and slides.  See our school schedule for the week.  Please check your child's swimsuit and make sure it still fits. This is the time for a well-fitting, modest, one piece suit, or one that is meant for swimming (not sunning). We can only accept signed doctor notes for not joining in the fun! Please bring a suit, clean towel, and a plastic bag for wet items to school each day!
Midterm week is next week! This is when we put posting grades on pause so students can evaluate their accomplishments half way through the term. Chalk will be frozen from January 12th-18th. Students can check in with their teachers at any time during this week to discuss grades, missing assignments or with any other questions. We hope you will encourage them to approach a teacher with any and all questions so they can feel successful in their classes. Chalk will be back in action on January 22nd!
Friday, January 31st is a no school day and we have the opportunity for students to attend a class at TRCS from Engineering for Kids , which introduces kids
to the fun aspects of science, technology, engineering, art and math. There are two classes offered: for 4th and 5th graders - LEGO EV3 Robotics: Robo Battles and for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders - LEGO EV3 Robotics: DaVinci's Designs . Please note, this is not a school sponsored event. All registration, supervision, and curriculum is provided by Engineering for Kids. Please direct all questions to them.
Our last fundraiser for ODS is here! Our See's Candies Valentine Fundraiser has begun. Please have your student stop by the office for an order packet if they will participating. All orders and payments must be received by January 30th due to deadlines from the company. 7th and 8th grade students can earn money off of the ODS fee of $450. All students can participate in this fundraiser. If 4th and 5th graders would like to participate, they can earn money towards the 4/5 week activity fee. Please note, this fundraiser is optional.
Please plan on joining us Thursday, January 30th at 6:00 pm for the 2020 State of the School meeting. Come and hear about upcoming events, Student Success Act, board goals/strategic plan, outdoor school and 4/5 week. We ask that at least one representative from each family attend, and that students stay at home. This is a time to stop mid-year to see where we have been and where we are going. We are looking for a few volunteers to bring in baked goods that we can serve at the meeting. Please email the office if you can help us out!
