What's Happening at TRCS
A MESSAGE FROM NIC CHAPIN
|
Happy Friday to you! We hope you have been enjoying the changing seasons in the Pacific Northwest. This week in our 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade Advisory class we focused on creating our leadership projects that will take place throughout the year. It has been a lot of fun to see what our students are dreaming about for the year. Not only are there some great projects in the works, but it has also been wonderful to see how they have been teaming together to create some really fun plans for the year.
Next week marks the middle of term one. We cannot believe how fast the year is moving! It is a great time for our community to reflect on how the first half of the term has gone and a time to look forward to the second half of the term! Next week teachers will pause posting anything new to chalk.com so that students have a chance to check their current grades and take the opportunity to talk to teachers about opportunities to improve marks. Work will still be assigned during midterm week.
This week we had the opportunity to kick off our community service outreach. We took our first group of students to downtown Portland to the Blanchet House. It was amazing how well our students did and the opportunity it provided them. We are so proud of the TRCS team!
Compassion thought of the week: Ralph Emerson said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” I encourage our entire community to look for ways to make a difference in somebody else's life! It is the greatest reward.
I hope everybody has a wonderful weekend. I hear the weather is supposed to be great! Enjoy it and we will see everybody on Monday.
Nic Chapin

We learned this week that Sangha has discontinued its services effective immediately. While this comes as a surprise, we have been developing plans to work around this news. Our office will be reaching out to parents to confirm the conference time(s) that were signed up for on Sangha. We will also reach out to those that we do not have record signing up so everyone has an opportunity to meet with a teacher this fall. We appreciate your patience while we work through this. Please note, our school calendar is still available on our website, but the Sangha app will not be updated any longer.

We also need volunteers! Please

The week of October 7-13 is the half-way point for Term One, also known as mid-term week! This means that teachers will freeze all posting of grades on Chalk, giving students the opportunity to check in with their teachers on any missing work and ask questions about their grades. This is a time for students to evaluate their progress and advocate for themselves!

This year, we are excited to offer not one, but TWO Math Clubs here at TRCS. The first is one designed for 4th and 5th graders. Lorena Candrian is coordinating the club to meet on Fridays. The club will meet on Friday mornings when school is not in session and after school when school is in session. The goal will be to practice a variety of math skills for fun, but also for some online competitions along the way. The goal will be to meet and compete November through February. Afterward they will reevaluate continuing for one more competition after that. The second math club is for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Thank you to Jean Svadlenka for coordinating our TRCS team(s). Students can sign up by Monday, October 14th, using the same form attached. The 6th-8th graders will be working on all sorts of skills and problem solvers to compete in the MathCounts competition in February. Meeting dates will be determined after the team is chosen. Find forms
here
and are also available at school. Please sign up by Monday, October 14th.
PARENTS: Dependent on the number of students who sign up, we may have a need for assistant coaches. Please seriously consider helping our lead coaches, as well as your child/children on the teams. Any interested parents are encouraged to send a message to
the office

Next week, our 6/7/8 will begin a 5-day touch rugby unit in PE. Our 4/5 will get their chance at the end of October (see dates below). We will be on the field rain or shine in the afternoons for about 45 minutes on blue days. Please remember to wear athletic shoes (no cleats!) and appropriate clothing for the weather (layers are great!). We also encourage students to bring their own water bottle. This is our third year partnering with
Oregon Rugby Sports Union
(ORSU) and it is a great way to connect our communities. As a reminder, students receive a pass/no pass grade in P.E. and an effort grade. We require a doctor's note if your student cannot participate. Rugby Dates for 6/7/8 are Monday 10/7, Wednesday 10/9, Monday 10/14, Wednesday 10/16, and Monday 10/21. Rugby Dates for 4/5 are Thursday 10/24, Monday 10/28, Wednesday 10/30.

As announced earlier in the year, we have scheduled a parent and student meeting for our 6th, 7th and 8th graders to discuss cell phone usage and school policies. Parents of 4/5th, you are invited to join but 4/5th grade students will not be able to partake in using their cell phones during the year. In order to earn a license to have their cell phone out at school, students AND parents are
required
to attend the meeting on October 22nd at 3:45 pm. We will hand out a booklet with information on being a responsible cell phone user at TRCS, as well as digital citizenship they can carry throughout life. Students will have to pass a test given at school to earn a license to be able to use a cell phone during designated school hours.
