A Brief Reflection of 2020
|
Our Wavecrest Management team goes above and beyond each day to better the lives of our residents and their communities. Over the past few years we’ve developed several expressions to help communicate our company-wide goals, from SMART goals to Raising the Bar and most recently PACE - Professionalism, Accountability, Communication, and Efficiency.
This year, we are Keeping PACE with a G - for Gratitude!
We are sincerely grateful for our Wavecrest family’s commitment & dedication to our clients, residents, and vendors alike. During these difficult times, we continue to take steps to ensure all facets of our operations align with our values.
Happy New Year!

Update on Betances
Completion of Betances Houses
During a period when everyone is spending more time at home than ever before, Betances residents reside in fully renovated apartments. We are proud to have completed all in-unit renovations this year, transforming the quality of life for the thousands of residents who call Betances Houses home.
|
Masks + Sanitizer Distribution
We partnered with our residents to keep developments clean, healthy, and safe, but realizing supplies were limited, we again partnered with the Catholic Charities of the Archdioceses of New York to distribute masks and hand sanitizer to all Betances and Ocean Bay residents. Tenants also received information about local food pantries, the 2020 census, job and unemployment assistance, SNAP applications, testing centers for COVID-19, and how to sign up for Bronxworks Homebase assistance.
The safety and health of our residents continues to be a top priority at Wavecrest, and we are proud to share that we have been proactive in social service partnerships that continuously care for our communities.

Wavecrest's Susan Camerata Selected to Serve on
City Advisory Council
|
We are proud to announce that Wavecrest’s very own Susan Camerata was asked to join Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Construction and Real Estate Sector Advisory Council during Summer 2020.
In her decades-long commitment to high quality management of housing, Susan has developed deep trust and relationships with building owners, vendors, contractors, social service providers, and residents. She is uniquely qualified to advocate what is best for these diverse groups, all of whom are impacted by COVID-19 restrictions in different and significant ways.
de Blasio created six councils representing critical service industries, and Susan is one of 30 leaders appointed to the Construction and Real Estate Sector Advisory Council to serve as a liaison to disseminate information about re-opening and provide guidance to shape the City’s response.
Please join us in congratulating Susan for being selected among the leaders in the real estate industry, who together advise key officials and agencies on safely and responsibly re-opening our communities. We are in good hands!

Betances Mentorship Program
With inconsistent school schedules and a gap in academic opportunities this year, Wavecrest, as a part of RDC, partnered with Catholic Charities to create a mentorship program for children living at Betances. 20 participating mentees received a laptop generously gifted by PC Richards and GE, school supplies, and a mentor match. Each week, mentor pairs would connect via Zoom to explore academic areas of interest, perform research, and practice skills. Mentors have provided social connection, personalized instruction, and fun engagement with students to ignite their curiosity and keep learning in this difficult time.

Fighting Food Insecurity
At the beginning of this challenging period, we didn't know how long the pandemic would last, but we did know that our residents were struggling. On April 9th, Holy Thursday, we partnered with the Catholic Charities of the Archdioceses of New York to host a community food distribution event in the Bronx. We were able to distribute 400 boxes of food containing 1600 meals to NYCHA residents in need, as well as additional personal care supplies, household items, and pet supplies.
In the many months since, we've partnered with various service providers and charities to distribute food and household items to residents at additional developments managed by Wavecrest.
Below, we’ve shared some of the media coverage we received from this event that demonstrates the positive impact this had on our residents.
|
|
This holiday season was quite different than most, as many communities were left reeling with the devastating effects of the pandemic.
During the holidays, Wavecrest Management donated over 500 toys to support local toy drives in the neighborhoods we serve.
Resident leaders, including those located at Bruckner by the Bridge, worked hand-in-hand with the on-site property management staff to hold events for children of all ages. Additionally, Betances Houses and Ocean Bay hosted their annual toy drives featuring social-distanced song and dance performances, and a visit from Santa Claus!

Update on Williamsburg Houses
|
In January 2020, we proudly announced that RDC Development, Wavecrest’s joint-venture with MDG Design + Construction, was awarded Williamsburg Houses as our third development under NYCHA’s PACT program.
Since then, we have started pre-development work on the site, including making HQS repairs, hosting resident meetings to provide site revitalization updates, selecting social service partners, conducting resident surveys, and more.
One of the biggest challenges we have faced so far is transitioning our resident engagement services to a virtual platform. But thanks to our Williamsburg team and the power of Zoom, we've had great success, and the residents of Williamsburg Houses are excited for construction to begin during Summer 2021!

|
Wavecrest Management is a firm believer in partnerships to build strong communities and a brighter tomorrow for our youth.
Partners at Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (BSRC) would like to share this internship opportunity with our Wavecrest team and their families.
About the Internship:
Restoration youth interns will have the opportunity to work between 10 and 20 hours a week for 2-3 months, and will take part in career coaching and job readiness training with Restoration staff. BSRC aims to place interns at external worksites that give them a foot in the door in industries aligned with their interests and career goals. Interns are paid minimum wage for their time in the program, and receive support with job search and job placement. BSRC staff will also support interns to pursue additional goals they may set related to furthering their education, training, and certification attainment. Youth do not need prior work experience to be considered for this opportunity, but must be able to commit to consistent and timely attendance, reliable communication, and participation in some components of the program that will be remote (such as virtual workshops).
Eligibility and Priorities:
- Must be a Brooklyn resident between the ages of 16 and 24
- Must be out of school, not already working, and without a college degree

"More than 50,000 New Yorkers sleep in
homeless shelters, and hundreds of thousands more struggle to pay high rents.

Wavecrest In & Out of Office
|
In March and April, Wavecrest In & Out of Office made its debut as a way to keep PACE with our Wavecrest Team while operations temporarily shifted online. This allowed the Wavecrest team to debate some of life's most existential questions.
|
|
 |
 |
At Wavecrest Management, we know there is a direct correlation between housing and equality. Housing stands as the foundation for improved health, education, and opportunities for success.
This summer we were reminded of the immeasurable pain, trauma, and division across the country related to systemic racism and unconscious bias. In response, Wavecrest leadership released a statement reminding our Wavecrest Team of the great work we do to combat these issues.
|
Sometimes It's Okay to be a Slacker!
|
In Fall 2020, the Office Operations team, managed by Jean-Paul Greczi, launched Slack across Wavecrest's networks.
While we are still in the process of implementing Slack at all site offices - it has proven to be a hit in the main office.
Wavecrest executive Joseph Camerata felt this was a necessary addition to help improve our internal communication, and . Department manager Michelle Rico (Controller) could not agree more:
"[Slack] is awesome. Now my outlook is strictly work related / external parties, and any quick or small conversations can be done through Slack. I even poll my team members to ask their opinion on different ideas and policies."

Wavecrest Woodstock Giveaway
Our friends at Axis Promotions, provider of our Wavecrest Management Swag (face-coverings, polos, fleece zip-ups, etc.), sent us a few items as a thank you for our support during these challenging times.
The spirit of the Woodstock festival in 1969 promoted peace and unity, which are important values to us at Wavecrest. The Woodstock Swag Box (featured above) features 2 water bottles, 2 notebooks, 2 Target gift cards, and more.
The winner of this raffle was HUD Occupancy Manager, Iris Romero, who shared the prize with fellow colleague Erika Gracia.

Ugly Sweater Day has become a holiday tradition at the Wavcrest office.
On December 18th, team members participated in this fashion nightmare before Christmas.
Some team members wore traditional holiday sweaters while others tapped into their creativity and opted for an original piece, like Resident Selection Coordinator, Cheyenne James.

Wavecrest Team Enjoying New Holiday Decor
The holiday elves got to work on a cold winter day in hopes of spreading holiday cheer. Safe to say it was a success! Second floor team members caught Frosty breaking company protocol and quickly offered him a mask.
