Bishop John gave his life to God, to the Church, and to our Archeparchy. We pray for the peace of his soul. We thank God for his life and service. Our dear Bishop John, a thoughtful kind man, lived his final years at St. Josaphat Seminary accompanied with great solicitude by Father Rector Robert Hitchens. We express our heartfelt condolences to Bishop John’s brothers: Nicholas, Theodore and his wife Joyce, Walter and his wife Mary Anne, and sister Rosalie and her husband Eugene Naumenko, to the entire Bura family, and all friends of the deceased.
May his memory be eternal!

Funeral services will be celebrated on January 23-24, 2023 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia with Metropolitan Borys Gudziak as principal celebrant.
Bishop Bura’s body will lie in state for viewing and prayer starting on at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 23rd at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Episcopal Parastas will be held the same day at 4:30 p.m.
A funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 24 at 9:30 a.m. After the Liturgy, the remains of Bishop Bura will be transferred to St. Andrew Cemetery in Bound Brook, NJ for interment.
The services will be open to the public and all clergy religious and faithful are encouraged to spiritually accompany Bishop John on his last journey.

On January 18, 2023, many parishes of our Archeparchy held Shchedryy Vechir. Specifically, at St. Nicholas Parish in Passaic, New Jersey, St. Michael in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, and St. Michael in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.
Sincere thanks from the community of St. Nicholas Church and priest Andrii Dudkevich to MishMash Catering for a delicious and generous dinner, a special thanks to the parish youth who performed Vertep and to the New Ukrainian Wave Foundation for supporting and organizing the holiday.
From St. Michael's Parish, Father Wasyl Kharuk thanked the Sisterhood of St. Anna for the excellent food and organization, the childrens’ choir Soloveiky who sang beautifully, the two Verteps, as well as special thanks was extended to the two defenders of Ukraine who, while undergoing rehabilitation in the United States, had the opportunity to attend the “Generous Evening”.
At the parish of St. Michael in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, children and youth presented a wonderful Vertep during a parish celebration.
May the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was baptized in the Jordan River, bless everyone.

Михаїла, що у Гіллсборо Тауншип, Нью Джерсі, та парафії Св. Михаїла, що у Дженкінтаун, Пенсільванія. Щира подяка від спільноти та отця-пароха Андрія Дудкевича: храму Св. Миколая, ресторану «MishMash Catering» за смачну та щедру вечерю, молоді, яка виступила з Вертепом та New Ukrainian Wave Foundation за підтримку і організацію свята.
На парафії Св. Михаїла отець Василь Харук висловив слова подяки: Сестринству Св. Анни за чудову їжу та організацію, «Соловейкам», які чудово співали, двом Вертепам, а також особлива подяка двом захисникам України, які, перебуваючи на реабілітації в США, мали змогу завітати на спільний Щедрий Вечір.

January 16, 2023, volunteer bingo workers of the Assumption of BVM Church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, gathered at Ria Mar restaurant for an appreciation dinner. It was another fine dining experience, well worth the price of helping out with our parish Wednesday Bingo. This event is always fun and shows our volunteers just how much their efforts are appreciated. Great time with some great people! Thanks for all your support.

After a three-year hiatus due to COVID, St. Nicholas Church in Wilmington, Delaware held its annual Christmas lunch on January 15 after morning liturgy. Rev. Volodymyr Klanichka welcomed more than 125 parishioners and guests for a hearty meal of traditional Ukrainian delicacies. After dinner, a vertep was performed by members of the UCC of Trenton. Following vertep and dessert, everyone joined in singing Christmas carols.

ZACCHEUS
Small in stature; tall in Faith
Practiced restitution, reparation
Zaccheus was a chief tax collector and a wealthy man. Having worked as a tax collector, he was not well liked by the people. He collected taxes for the Roman civil authorities. The people did not look positively at the tax collector. The money went to the occupiers of their land, the Romans.
Beyond this, Zaccheus at certain times had wrongfully taken more than a fair amount. This Zaccheus admits to the Lord: ”If I have extorted anything from anyone, I shall repay it four times over.” He also mentioned that he would give half his possessions to the poor. This Zaccheus states after encountering the Lord for the very first time.
Today’s Gospel begins with the Lord intending to simply pass through the town of Jericho as He would continue travelling throughout the towns and cities, announcing the “Good News” of salvation. Zaccheus was a sincere and honest man who as a Jew heard about the prophecies of the Old Testament and also heard about Jesus who announced the kingdom of God here on earth and worked miracles among His people. Zaccheus possessed a great desire “to see who Jesus was.” (Luke 19:3)
But there was an obstacle, a hurdle that needed to be overcome: “he (Zaccheus) could not see Him (Jesus) because of the crowd.” (v. 3) We are told that Zaccheus was also “short in stature.” Zaccheus had great determination and ingenuity. He solved this problem or difficulty by running ahead and climbing a sycamore tree. Zaccheus believed that this way he would be able to see Jesus as He would pass by.
This does not go unnoticed. As Jesus was passing by, He looks up and sees Zaccheus sitting up the tree and said: “Zaccheus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” (v.5) Zaccheus’ response is immediate: he came down quickly to receive the Lord with joy.
The crowd who had seen this also had a reaction: much grumbling. They disapproved of Jesus going to the house of Zaccheus, whom they called “a sinner.” (v. 7) Zaccheus had become aware of this opposition but stood his ground. It is here that Zaccheus’ words to Jesus are that of a changed man, a repentant sinner. “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anyone I shall repay it four times over.” (v.8) These are words of a man who has experienced a deep inward conversion, a change of heart. A new way of life is occurring, for Zaccheus is now going to follow the path directed by the Lord.
The repentant sinner Zaccheus recognizes that we are to share our wealth with the poor, our brothers and sisters in need. His conversion is real because he wants to make reparation for his previous sins of “extortion.” (v. 8) And not just to return the overpayment of taxes, but four times the amount wrongfully taken.
This concept of restitution is found today in the Catholic Church’s teaching on morality. In the Catholic encyclopedia, New Advent, we read:
Restitution has a special sense in moral theology. It signifies an act of commutative justice by which exact reparation as far as possible is made for an injury that has been done to another. An injury may be done to another by detaining what is known to belong to him in strict justice and by wilfully doing him damage in his property or reputation. As justice between man and man requires that what belongs to another should be rendered him, justice is violated by keeping from another against his reasonable will what belongs to him, and by willfully doing him damage in goods or reputation. Commutative justice, therefore, requires that restitution should be made whenever that virtue has been violated. This obligation is identical with that imposed by the Seventh Commandment, "Thou shalt not steal." For the obligation not to deprive another of what belongs to him is identical with that of not keeping from another what belongs to him. As theft is a grave sin of its own nature, so is the refusal to make restitution for injustice that has been committed.
Indeed, the converted Zaccheus understood the desire to make right what was wrongfully done and even the need to attempt to restore and make reparation in whatever way possible.
The Lord is overjoyed and says to Zaccheus: “Today salvation has come to this house (Zaccheus’) because this man (Zaccheus) too is a descendent of Abraham.” (v. 9) He was truly a “son of Abraham” and acted appropriately. Zaccheus, the repentant sinner, had become his true self whom God called into being. He had become that which the name Zaccheus means “pure.”
The reason the Lord was born, and became one of us except for sin, was to save souls, to save the souls of sinners through conversion and repentance.
Zaccheus’ encounter with Jesus is indeed one we should reflect upon. One of the titles for Jesus in Sacred Scriptures is “Teacher”. The teacher at the time of our Lord was one who not only would teach facts or information, but rather would teach a way of life. Jesus the Lord sought to make anew a world beset and tainted by sin. If one wanted to become the disciple of a particular “rabbi”, very often he would come to live with him. The disciple followed the lead of the Master. As the Master lived, so too did the disciple.
Christ as the new Adam undid the consequences of sin. Jesus’ life of humble, loving dedication and service to our Heavenly Father is salvific. We Christians are called to be in mind and spirit as that of Christ. May the spirit of Christ guide, guard and protect us from any physical or spiritual harm. May we have the determination of Zaccheus to encounter the Lord here on earth. Christ is present in Word (Sacred Scripture) and Sacrament, especially in the reception of the Holy Eucharist. May His Gospel message of Absolute Love and Truth enlighten us and keep us on the path to our eternal reward, the Kingdom of God we call “Heaven”.
