This Sunday, October 5th, St. Nicholas School celebrates its 85 years. It brings together children of many backgrounds as one family in God. Guided by prayer each day, teachers help students learn to love, protect, and care for one another — continuing a tradition of faith and community for 85 years.
Eighty-five years is more than a number — it is thousands of lessons taught, prayers lifted, songs sung, and friendships formed within the walls of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic School in Passaic, NJ. Since opening its doors in 1940, the school has woven together faith, culture, and academic excellence for generations of students.

| | Basilian Sisters to welcome the 94th Annual Pilgrimage to the Mother of God | | |
A beloved tradition of prayer, community, and Marian devotion will enter its 94th year tas the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great welcome pilgrims from across the region to their Motherhouse grounds for the annual Pilgrimage to the Mother of God.
First held in 1931, shortly after the completion of the original monastery building, the pilgrimage has become a spiritual cornerstone for the Ukrainian Catholic community. Each year, close to 1,000 people gather on the Sisters' serene campus ni Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, including visitors from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and the Washington, D.C. area.

“We Need a Theology Born of Experience” — Metropolitan Borys Gudziak
From September 26–28, the Ukrainian Catholic University hosted the All-Church Forum “UGCC Theology in the 21st Century: Signs of the Times and Hopes.” Nearly 200 scholars, priests, and consecrated persons gathered to reflect on the mission of theology today. The forum was opened by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the UGCC, and concluded with remarks from Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, who joined online.

Year of Service: Sisters of the Institute Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará
Since 2021, the sisters of the Institute Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará have been serving in Perth Amboy, New Jersey — teaching, leading catechism, supporting parish life, and accompanying families in faith. On August 22, 2025, they shared the results of this mission with Metropolitan Archbishop Borys Gudziak.
In their daily work, the three sisters (Sr. Veronica, Sr. Svitanku, Sr. Trijtsi) minister at Assumption Catholic Church and Assumption Catholic School, engaging in both educational and pastoral service.

Від 2021 року сестри Воплоченого Слова і Діви Марії з Матари служать у місті Перт-Амбой, штат Нью-Джерзі — навчають, проводять катехизацію, підтримують парафіяльне життя та супроводжують родини у вірі. 22 серпня 2025 року вони поділилися підсумками цього служіння з митрополитом-архієпископом Борисом Ґудзяком.
У своєму щоденному служінні три сестри (с. Вероніка, с. Світанку та с. Трійці) здійснюють своє служіння в парафії та школі Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці, займаючись як освітнім, так і душпастирським служінням.

St. John’s in Northampton Begins New Year of Religious Education
On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, St. John’s Parish in Northampton, PA, opened the 2025–2026 year of Religious Education. They warmly welcomed their students and expressed deep gratitude to their dedicated teachers: Kim Matto, Mary Hochmiller, Lisa Yonosh, Michelle Barbieri, Tania Kulischenko, Marcia Bolesky-Vincler, and student teacher Kat Turcotte. Their commitment, time, and care make this important parish ministry possible.

‘O Woman, How Great is Your Faith. Let it Be Done for You as You Wish.”
(Matthew 15:28)
Today’s Gospel reading begins with Jesus entering the region of Tyre and Sidon, an unfriendly territory for an Israelite to travel through. The two peoples, Israelites and Canaanites, were at odds with one another. The Canaanites were mostly pagan. In Tyre, there was built a temple to worship the idol, pagan god, Baal.
The pagan cult of Baal was very cruel and demonic. The cult included the mistreatment of woman and children. The true Israelite would look down upon the Canaanite who accepted such practices. For the first commandment given by Yahweh God to Moses forbids any and all worship to false gods. There is but one God, Yahweh, Who established His covenant with Abraham.
This dislike and non-acceptance of the Cannanites by the Jews did not prevent nor stop her from approaching the Lord. By Jesus passing through this region, the Canaanite woman had the opportunity to meet Jesus and plead with Him to heal, to cure her daughter. The Canaanite woman, a mother who is truly and deeply concerned about her daughter who was troubled, “tormented by a demon.” (v. 22)
The mother begins her plea: “Have pity (compassion) on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” (Matthew 15:22) The woman addresses Jesus as “Lord” and “Son David.” These are Messianic titles, meaning that the Canaanite woman acknowledges and openly states her belief that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah.
At first the Lord made no reply, didn’t say a word. His disciples then suggest to the Lord to simply turn the Canaanite woman away, for she was beginning to “nag” them, for “she keeps calling out after us.” (v. 23) It is now that the Lord speaks, explaining: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (v. 24)
The Canaanite woman is persistent in her plea and comes forward and did Him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” (v.25) The dialogue between the Canaanite woman and the Lord Jesus continues. Jesus replies: “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” (v. 26) The Canaanite woman, mother of a trouble daughter, speaks out saying: “Please Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” (v. 27)
It is after this talk about the food of the children that Jesus effects the cure. The Lord Jesus is amazed at the level of faith the Canaanite woman expressed. The Lord says to her: “O woman, how great is your faith. Let it be done for you as you wish.” (v. 28) St. Matthew the Evangelist then tells us: “And her daughter was healed from that hour.” (v. 28)
The woman’s plea was now no longer for herself or her daughter but for the children who seek to satisfy their hunger. Already in the Old Testament Yahweh God sent manna from Heaven to sustain the Israelites during their journey to the Promised Land. Jesus Christ, the new Moses, delivers His faithful people from the powers of sin, death, and evil. Jesus, the Bread of Life, gives us His Body and Blood, in the worthy reception of the Holy Eucharist to sustain us in our earthly pilgrimage to the Heavenly City.
May we Christians possess the same great Faith in Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and His power to deliver us from all that is not of God. May turn to Him and no there is no greater love for us than that which He has for us. Great is His Faithfulness. He will never abandon us in times of trial and tribulation. May we be determined in seeking a favorable resolution in times of difficulty.
May our faith be great. May we be persistent in our plea, knowing that thee Lord God Who knows and sees all and can be deceived by no one will justly reward us for constancy in Faith and one welcome us into eternity to live with Him forever in Heaven.
