Y's Men Learn Keys to Living Better Longer
Y’s Men hosted three fitness experts last Thursday who talked about living better longer.
Personal Trainer Frank McGinnis talked about strength and conditioning as keys to a longer and healthier life; Renee Plato, MD, spoke about avoiding skin cancer; and
Marcy Pudim, a dietitian at Norwalk Hospital, talked about diet and heart health.
The highlights:
Taking care of our skin by protecting our moisture barrier, is “massively important” to living longer.
The peak of our strength was in our mid-30s, and that our aerobic capacity declines by about five percent per year, so continuing to do what we did when we were young is essential.
They left Y's Men with a few to dos, chief among them:
- Join Y’s Men activities
- Limit donut intake to one per month
- Eat a breakfast including protein and carbs with fiber — eggs, Greek yogurt, and selections from each food group
- Exercise regularly, when you want to — if you’re not a morning person, don’t schedule your exercise first thing in the day
- When working with weights, increase the weights, work to momentary failure, and keep pushing
- Use alcohol in moderation — no more than two drinks per day. Alcohol has no nutritional value
- If you’re recovering from an injury at the gym, don’t stop when your insurance payment stops

Melissa Newman and Foster Hirsch discussed their respective books at the Library last week.
Melissa Newman and Foster Hirsch
Talk About Hollywood in the 1950s and More
Last Wednesday evening the Y’s Men and The Westport Library welcomed Melissa Newman, daughter of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and noted cinema author Foster Hirsch who engaged in a relaxed, humorous and insightful conversation.
Hirsch, author of many highly regarded books on the film industry, was interviewed by Melissa about his latest release "Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties" which offers an understanding of the industry during the 1950s and the emergence of stars that are household names to us, including Newman and Woodward.
Melissa spoke to her new book "Head Over Heels-Newman and Woodward" about life growing up as the child of two superstars, offering sensitive and humorous anecdotes and insights into their relationship and mindset toward their craft, and as parents. Melissa displayed many intimate and loving photographs taken over the years of her incredible parents.
