Y’s Men Meeting on Thursday, January 9 Canceled

To Honor Memory of President Carter

President Biden has declared Thursday, January 9 a National Day of Mourning to honor and memorialize Former President Jimmy Carter.

The Y’s Men will reschedule its meeting with Ed Levy on that date, and announce the new date very soon.

We will remember President Carter for his presidency, and many years of public service after his term, and pray that he rest in peace.

Event Fully Booked; Come Early for Waitlist Seating

Veteran Journalists and Others To Examine the Future of News

Senator Richard Blumenthal

Alisyn Camerota

John Berman

Dave Briggs

Registration is currently at capacity, but there will be an in-person waitlist at the event. If you were unable to register but would like to attend, please arrive at The Library between 1:30 and 1:50 pm. The Library will seat those as availability allows.

CNN morning host John Berman, veteran journalists Alisyn Camerota and Dave Briggs, and special guest U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal headline a timely discussion about the news media’s evolution after the 2024 election.

They will discuss the challenges and changes facing the industry in the wake of a contentious election cycle, and the evolution of how the public gets its news. Following the discussion, the assembled panelists will answer questions from the audience.

The panel also will feature Westport’s own Dan Woog, who will provide a local perspective based on his work as an author and daily blogger of 06880: Where Westport Meets the World. Mary Elizabeth Fulco, Staples High School's award-winning journalism teacher, Joseph Del Gobbo, co-teacher and literary magazine editor, and student representatives from Staples High School's journalism program will be on hand to explore the media's role in democracy and the future of journalism.

Blumenthal will serve as a special guest of honor for the afternoon. Connecticut’s senior senator was first elected in 2011 and is currently in his third term, having previously served as the state’s attorney general from 1991 to 2011.

Key issues to be addressed by the panel include journalism under political pressure, maintaining accuracy and truthfulness, preserving public trust, combating deliberate misinformation and disinformation, and adapting to rapid information spread on digital platforms.

This event will be moderated by Y’s Men Past President John Brandt. It is co-sponsored by The Westport Library and the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston.

Thirsty Thursday Sugar Bowl Party Saved by Y's Man Larry Lich

A Thirsty Thursday Sugar Bowl Party went on as scheduled last week thanks to Y's Man Larry Lich and his wife Judi. Nabil Atweh, the original host, had to re-schedule to next week and the Lichs pinch hitted without missing a beat.

The group had a great get together watching Notre Dame defeat Georgia. A great time was had by all, except for Georgia as they now have to watch the semi-final between Notre Dame and Penn State.

Thanks again to Larry and Judi for being great last-minute hosts.
