Tuesday Evening Picnics at Compo Beach

The traditional Y's Men Tuesday evening picnics at Compo Beach have begun and will continue through the summer.

Arranged by Y's Man Jon Fox, the gatherings take place on South Beach "642 feet to the right of the cannons." There is no need for a beach sticker. Simply tell them at the entrance that you are attending the Y's Men picnic. It begins about 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Bring your own chairs, finger food and your choice of beverage perhaps to share (no glass containers are allowed).

If weather is bad (too hot, too cold, rainy), Jon says, "Stay home. Otherwise, just come and enjoy." If additional information is needed, contact Jon by clicking here.

Y's Men Bocce Players Meet Wednesday

The Y's Men Bocce Group meets Wednesday, June 12 and every Wednesday (weather permitting) at Veterans Park, 909 Reef Road, in Fairfield, where there are six well-maintained Bocce Courts available.

Teams are formed and games start at 10:30 am and usually run until noon.

No registration is required. Just show up and join a team of fellow Y's Men.

Reminder emails are sent out on Tuesday evening. If you wish to be added to the list, send your email address to Len Ances ances@sbcglobal.net

Thursday Morning Social Hour at Sherwood Island

Now that the business and guest speaker portions of the Thursday morning meetings are on summer hiatus, the social hour from 9:00 am to 10:00 am is held every Thursday at the Sherwood Island Pavilion.

Coffee, donuts and bagels are available beginning at 9:00 am every Thursday through August 29. Following the social hour, a walking group forms to tour Sherwood Island

Y's Men Walk Broadway to Fraunces Tavern Tomorrow

A walk, arranged and led by Y's Man Warren Jahn and focusing on the history of Alexander Hamilton in New York, will be held tomorrow (Monday, June 10). The walk will roughly follow Seventh Avenue and Broadway from Times Square to the Battery with side trips to notable sites. Lunch will be at Fraunces Tavern.

Y’s Men’s Consumer Reports Tour: An Insider's Glimpse

A group of Y's Men, their spouses and guests enjoyed exclusive access to the Consumer Reports laboratories in Yonkers last Wednesday. This marked the first time CR opened its doors to an organization since the onset of the Covid pandemic, making the experience all the more special.

The visit started with a warm welcome and a delightful lunch, followed by a wine tasting. Consumer Reports President and CEO Marta Tellado and Editorial Director Ellen Kunes extended their greetings, setting the stage for an engaging tour.

Divided into small groups, the attendees were treated to an in-depth exploration of the expansive testing laboratories. CR's experts provided comprehensive explanations, unveiling some of their methodologies for testing a wide range of consumer products. From household appliances to electronics and beyond, the demonstrations and explanations offered insight into the rigorous testing processes that underpin CR's trusted reports, available to subscribers in print and online formats each month.

This insider's look into CR's operations further reinforced the value and credibility of their evaluations. The tour followed another rare visit last year to CR's automotive testing facility in Connecticut. The Y’s Men thank Ron Holtz for his special efforts to arrange both tours.

Remembering Our Last Living Connections to D-Day

As the 80th anniversary of D-Day was observed last Thursday, June 6, Y’s Man Ted Horowitz reflected on the loss of the Y’s Men’s last living connections to that historic day.

As he watched coverage of the event, Ted said, “I can’t help but remember our friend Y’s Man Len Fisher who participated in creating maps for the invasion.” (Leonard Everett Fisher, a Y’s Man since 2004, passed away on March 2, 2024 at the age of 99).

“Sadly, Len is not with us today, but if he were, he would have been in Normandy to remember that day and his fellow soldiers who did not make it home. Len was our connection via the Y’s Men to history. He was a living link, along with other Y’s Men who have passed, who were heroes who did what they had to do to protect freedom and democracy,” Ted said.
