We'll Wait Until Next Year

The annual Y's Men's entry in the Westport Memorial Day Parade float competition was put on weather delay, as in "wait 'til next year." The likelihood of rain and the safety of both float cast members and the sound system were the determining factors in the decision to store this year's float honoring the USO until it is refurbished for next year's parade.

According to float meisters Roy McKay and Baxter Urist, the thought of having one of "The Andrews Sisters" slip and fall on a wet stage, or the very expensive, rented sound system sustain water damage, were enough reason to cancel this year's float appearance.

"As you might imagine, notifying cast members of the decision was not unlike announcing a death in the family. Each one had a special reason for being part of our celebration of the USO. Military morale is what our USO float is all about and will be again next year, when the float will be even more polished.

"We thank all the contributors, from our matchless dancers, to the builders, to the helpers, who played roles in what will be an outstanding and another award-winning effort next Memorial Day. Kudos to all!," Roy and Baxter said.

Large Turnout for 2024 Annual Meeting and Picnic

More than 120 Y's Men attended last Thursday's Annual Meeting and Picnic at Sherwood Island.

President Dewey Loselle expressed his appreciation for the support of the current board and the help of so many members during a year of social activity growth, expansion of physical activities and an unparalleled 132 new members under the leadership of Membership Chairman Ron Holtz.

The new board members were introduced and voted in unanimously. Three well deserved Order of the Owl awards were then given to Ed Bloch, Roy Fuchs and Roy McKay for their outstanding contributions this year.

New President Bruce Borner was introduced and commented about future priorities and objective, after which Dewey offered final comments and adjourned the meeting for a very social and most enjoyable luncheon.

Welcome to our new President Bruce Borner.

A Few Slots Open for Consumer Reports Tour

Additional openings have been allocated for the Consumer Reports tour allowing for the attendance of spouses and friends. Previously the tour was limited to Y's Men only.

The outing, from 1:00 to 3:30 pm on Wednesday, June 5, consists of a lab tour and wine tasting at CR's national headquarters in Yonkers. CEO & President Marta Tellado will greet the Y's Men with welcoming remarks.

There is a minimum $50.00 donation (more if you like) to Consumer Reports which is a not-for-profit organization that takes no commercial funding and depends on contributors like us.

A list of attendees will be issued this week to all who have registered in order to set up carpooling. Carpools will be from the Merritt Parkway Exit 42 at 11:00 am and will be arranged by attendees not T&E or the Y's Men.

For additional information contact Ron Holtz at ronholtz.ysmen@gmail.com or 203-993-4970.

Andrew Wilk Describes Capturing

The Performing Arts for Broadcast

Producing and directing the performing arts for broadcast was the main subject of a a video-illustrated interview with Andrew Wilk last Wednesday before an appreciative audience of Y's Men, significant others, and members of the Westport community. Y's Man and Past President John Brandt interviewed Wilk, leading the audience through three decades of award-winning broadcast work by the retired executive producer and director of "Live From Lincoln Center."

The event, a collaboration of the Y's Men Classical Music Society and The Westport Library, Wilk talked about the material he captured for broadcast and the wide variety of music, theater, dance and solo performances that comprised fascinating viewing. Wilk, retired but not really, is also responsible for the Library's medical series in concert with Y's Man Dr. Robert Altbaum, scheduled to return in the fall.

Tuesday Evening Picnics at Compo Begin This Week

Besides the Annual Hot Dog Roast scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 (see listing above under Future Social Events), the traditional Y's Men Tuesday evening picnics at Compo Beach will begin this week on May 28.

Arranged by Y's Man Jon Fox, the gathering takes place on South Beach "642 feet to the right of the cannons." There is no need for a beach sticker. Simply tell them at the entrance that you are attending the Y's Men picnic. It begins about 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Bring your own chairs, finger food and your choice of beverage perhaps to share (no glass containers are allowed).

If weather is bad (too hot, too cold, rainy), Jon says, "Stay home. Otherwise, just come and enjoy." If additional information is needed, contact Jon by clicking here.

Y's Men Investment Club Has Openings for New Members

The Y's Men Investment Club, a limited partnership investing in listed securities, has openings for additional Y’s Men. Active for more than 20 years, the club has a strong portfolio of stocks with the current individual partner’s share less than $30,000.

Year to date returns exceed the Dow Jones and S&P 500. The Club has achieved results that have returned funds more than a member’s initial investment.

Members share investment knowledge and information, participate in identifying investment opportunities, enjoy the interaction of like-minded members, and, most important, make a profit.

For additional information and to participate in a meeting contact the Club president, Jay Hamburger, at jaycynh@aol.com
