Jeffrey Mayer

Jeffrey Mayer Offers a Case to Impeach Abraham Lincoln

Westport Resident Jeffrey Mayer spoke to the Y’s Men last Thursday about the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and the decisions he made, many of which conflicted with the Constitution and fell outside the law. Lincoln's rulings before and during the Civil War addressed the secession of Southern states and other important events.

While Lincoln is revered as being one of the greatest of American Presidents, Mayer offers an argument for impeachment based on decisions and actions taken by our 16th President. Does he make his case? Watch this most interesting video and judge for yourself.

An expert on American History, Mayer has taught about Civil War History since 1988 and is currently working on a book detailing the Lincoln presidency.

             No Travel Group Meeting Tomorrow

The Y’s Men Travel Group will not meet tomorrow (Monday, October 14) but will resume its normal biweekly schedule on Monday, October 28. See all you travelers then!

Y's Men Ping Pong Group Plays Mondays at Senior Center

Remember when you first saw the Chinese ping pong team? The shock that this could actually be the same game we played in the basement. The actual table was just a postage stamp piece of the playing field that extended a good ten yards on each side of it.

The Y's Men's Table Tennis/Ping Pong Group do not stand up against the table, either, and are moving farther away with meetings every Monday at the Westport Center for Senior Activities from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. New members are absolutely welcome.

The new Group Leader is Y's Man Steve Eliot, who thanks Y's Man Tom Lowrie for leading the Group since it began. Steve is exploring forming a Y's Men Ping Pong team for matches with other local senior men's groups. More active players are needed.

To play, you must register with the Center which takes only a minute.

For information, contact Steve Eliot at steliot@aol.com.

Civil Discourse to Resolve Complex Disputes

Y’s Men are invited to a Common Ground Initiative, The Westport Library’s forum for public discourse on topical issues of importance to the community. The subject will be a Conversation on Civil Discourse to Resolve Complex Disputes: With Ken Feinberg (above), Special Master for the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund. It will be at The Westport Library this Tuesday (October 15), from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

Join an enlightening evening with conflict resolution expert Feinberg, who

will share his experience and expertise in bringing people together to analyze, understand, and resolve complex disputes.

He will be in discussion with moderator Steve Parrish.

Admission is free but registration should be made with The Library by clicking here.

British Raid on Danbury Topic of This Thursday's Speaker

Ed Hynes

Ed Hynes was born and raised in Wilton, attended Wilton High School, and currently lives in Norwalk. He graduated from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. with a BA in political science, and subsequently spent most of his career in financial services.

Ed first became interested in the Danbury Raid as a child when he learned his neighbor’s house was partially burned by the British during the raid. He and his wife are fascinated by history and have visited many important battlefields both here and abroad.

Ed will talk about the British landing at Compo Beach in the spring of 1777, their march through Redding to Danbury, and their return to the shore through Ridgefield and Wilton. He will discuss the main encounters that took place in Danbury and Ridgefield and the roles key historical figures played in the Raid and Battle.

Meanwhile, don't forget to get vaccinated for Covid and flu. The CDC says both diseases are major killers: Covid, still third after heart disease and cancer; flu is fifth. Now is the time to get both shots at the same time, perfectly safe for most but check with your provider.

Y’s Men Participate in Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief

About 70 Y’s Men gave time and money last week to participate in the North Carolina Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Program. Members contributed funds to buy ten generators and other badly needed provisions which were immediately sent to Asheville, North Carolina.

Y’s Men started arriving at Stop and Shop in Westport last Tuesday morning and joined with Westport Rotarians and others to buy, package, box and then load a large truck headed to North Carolina. Bravo and thanks to the 70 or so Y's Men who put together the contribution within three days and generously donated to the effort. They are:

Westport "Lit Up" Last Week

Last week, the local community had a very rare treat with a wonderful display of Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. It occurred not once but twice. Here is a great photo from Y's Man Ted Horowitz
