GIDG To Focus on Middle East at Monday's Meeting

The Global Issues Discussion Group (GIDG) will meet next Monday, October 21 at 9:00 am in Rooms 203/204 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. There were lively discussions on Africa at the last two meetings but the Group will return to topics in the Middle East on Monday. Because that area is heating up, there should be plenty of key current issues.

The hot topics now are "If, How and What: Should Israel Attack Iran." Next: How far will or should Israel progress in attacking Hezbollah. And most recently, the US has sent in about 100 troops to man the THAAD anti-missile launchers to protect Israel from possible Iranian attacks.

There will probably be more hot issues by Monday.

See you there.

Frank Wood, GIDG Moderator

Y's Men Partner With VFW Post 399 in Blood Drive

One of the most important Y’s Men Community Service initiatives is our partnership with Westport’s VFW Post 399 in sponsoring their monthly American Red Cross Blood Drives at the Joseph J. Clinton VFW Hall on Riverside Avenue.

Our first sponsorship is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

There are two ways to participate:

1. Sign-up to donate blood on-line at redcrossblood.org or through the American Red Cross Blood Donor App.

2. Volunteer to help greet, sign in and serve refreshments to donors.

Please contact Y’s Men Blood Drive Coordinator Jay Dirnberger at jaydirnberger@gmail.com

Donating blood is one of the easiest and most important ways we can support our community.

Please join your fellow Y’s Men in giving the gift of life.

Pianist Orin Grossman Performs This Thursday in Sanctuary

Orin Grossman

Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts may no longer be on television, but we have the world-renowned musical interpreter and performer Orin Grossman live this Thursday (October 24) at 10:00 am in the Church's Sanctuary.

Grossman has played halls from the Quick Center to Carnegie Hall. His first love is the music of George Gershwin, and who can argue with that? He’s played Gershwin songs and classical compositions around the world, including Florence, Cairo, Australia, and St. Petersburg.

Thursday’s presentation features a discussion and performance of Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Looking for a Boy.” Plus two works by another great American composer, Duke Ellington, “Swampy River” and “Single Petal of a Rose.”

Orin graduated Harvard, Magna cum Laude in Music, and earned his Ph.D. in Music at Yale. He’s been at Fairfield University for nearly 50 years as Professor, Dean, and Academic Vice President. Now he is Professor Emeritus of Visual and Performing Arts.

Don’t miss him this Thursday.

Orin will highlight our regular Thursday morning meeting this week. Coffee, donuts and conversation with limited seating begin at 9:00 am in Hoskins Hall of the Saugatuck Congregational Church. At 10:00 am, we move upstairs to the sanctuary for his presentation leaving all food and beverages behind. None allowed in the sanctuary.

Enter Expo 21 Photo Contest Starting This Thursday

By Nancy Breakstone Photography

Our 21st Annual Photo Contest is open only to Y’s Men members and our wives, plus participants at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. In short, Expo 21 is only for shooters old enough to have decided what’s good – or not!

You can start submitting entries this Thursday, October 24 and must have them in by Thursday, November 7.

If you’ve entered before (or a first-timer) be sure to read the new rules click here . As always, your three photos have to be mounted to a precise size and delivered to one of our meetings or to the Senior Center. The entry fee has been waived and a new honest category has been added “Highly Manipulated.”

That label applies to too many photos we see in shows now. They are heavily edited with software to make, for example, the most spectacular sunset ever seen on the planet and like no reality the photographer ever did see – just imagined.

The rules are specific about photos fitting in this category which “look more like art than a depiction of reality.” Welcome to the new era of creative photography. Nothing wrong with being creative with photographs, except when not labeled as such and viewers are deceived. Expo 21 is requiring labels.

Judging will take place on Tuesday, November 12, and the entries will be on display at the Senior Center from Friday, November 15 through January 2025.

Please don’t wait for the last minute to enter. It takes some time.

Ed Hynes Brings the British Back to Westport

Ed Hynes first became interested in the Danbury Raid as a child when he learned his neighbor’s house was partially burned by the British during the raid. He and his wife are fascinated by history and have visited many important battlefields both here and abroad.

Ed gave the Y’s Men a riveting presentation about the British landing at Compo Beach in the spring of 1777, their march through Redding to Danbury, and their return to the shore through Ridgefield and Wilton.

He discussed the encounters that took place in Danbury and Ridgefield and the roles key historical figures played in the Raid and Battle.

He gave a fascinating history of Benedict Arnold and the events motivating one of the most famous “flips” in American history. Ed spoke of the relations and non-relationship between the British soldiers and the colonial army and the many aspects of the Revolutionary War we never knew.

This was a true history lesson that included the involvement of Westport, street-by-street. You must see this extremely engaging and educational video.

Can You See This?

You may be able to read this, but many others can’t.

They need your help, and now it’s easy for you to give it to them.

Please bring your unused glasses, whether prescription or just readers, and drop them in the donation box at a Thursday morning meeting.

The more pairs you bring, the more people you help, so bring in those unused glasses, or you will have to answer to Jon Fox.

Place Your Order for Free At-Home COVID-19 Tests

Residential households in the U.S. are now eligible for another order of #4 free at-home tests from USPS.com.
