Entry Period Now Open for Expo 21 Photo Contest | |
|
Our 21st Annual Photo Contest is open only to Y’s Men members and our wives, plus participants at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. In short, Expo 21 is only for shooters old enough to have decided what’s good – or not!
The period for submitting entries began last Thursday and will end Thursday, November 7.
If you’ve entered before (or a first-timer) be sure to read the new rules click here. As always, your three photos have to be mounted to a precise size and delivered to one of our meetings or to the Senior Center. The entry fee has been waived and a new honest category has been added “Highly Manipulated.”
That label applies to too many photos we see in shows now. They are heavily edited with software to make, for example, the most spectacular sunset ever seen on the planet and like no reality the photographer ever did see – just imagined.
The rules are specific about photos fitting in this category which “look more like art than a depiction of reality.” Welcome to the new era of creative photography. Nothing wrong with being creative with photographs, except when not labeled as such and viewers are deceived. Expo 21 is requiring labels.
Judging will take place on Tuesday, November 12, and the entries will be on display at the Senior Center from Friday, November 15 through January 2025.
Please don’t wait for the last minute to enter. It takes some time.

Y's Men Ping Pong Group Plays Mondays at Senior Center
Remember when you first saw the Chinese ping pong team? The shock that this could actually be the same game we played in the basement. The actual table was just a postage stamp piece of the playing field that extended a good ten yards on each side of it.
The Y's Men's Table Tennis/Ping Pong Group do not stand up against the table, either, and are moving farther away with meetings every Monday at the Westport Center for Senior Activities from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. New members are absolutely welcome.
The new Group Leader is Y's Man Steve Eliot, who thanks Y's Man Tom Lowrie for leading the Group since it began. Group Leader Steve Eliot is exploring forming a Y's Men Ping Pong team for matches with other local senior men's groups. More active players are needed.
To play, you must register with the Center which takes only a minute.
For information, contact Steve Eliot at steliot@aol.com.

Travel Group Meets Tomorrow at 9:00 am
The Y’s Men Travel Group will meet from 9:00 to 10:30 am this Monday (October 28) in Room 203 at the Church.
All meetings start by our members talking about their recent travel experiences. Quite a few have recently traveled so there should be some interesting experiences to share.
The topic to kick things off this week: To Tip or Not to Tip, That is the Question
As usual, the Group can move on to other subjects of interest.
Additions continue to be made to the Y's Men Travel Reference Doc, located here.
For information about the Y’s Men Travel Group, or to be added to the Group’s email distribution list, please contact Art Mann, mannart03@gmail.com.

Art History Visualizing the Music of the Grateful Dead
| |

This Thursday (October 31) noted art historian Dr. Philip Eliasoph will speak to the Y’s Men about the Grateful Dead, and provide an insight into the group, their music and their connection to art history. Join us for this most interesting perspective that will be of great interest to all “Deadheads” and well beyond.
Our Thursday morning meetings are held in Hoskins Hall downstairs in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport. Coffee, donuts, bagels and cream cheese are available from 9:00 am to 10:00 am; the business meeting begins at 10:00 am; and the speaker is introduced at 10:30 am with a finish no later than 11:30 am.

Y’s Men and The Westport Library
Present Consumer Reports, Thursday, November 7
| |
Consumer Reports always has your back when it comes to the information you need to make the right decisions on, well, virtually everything!
The Y's Men of Westport/Weston, in association with The Westport Library, bring Consumer Reports experts Ellen Kunes, Barrie Rosen, and Jen Shecter to the Library for an inside look at how CR delivers the key information you need through Consumer Reports magazine.
Invite your spouse and friends as this Y's Men presentation is open to the public and is not to be missed.
| Orin Grossman Teaches and Plays Gershwin and Ellington | | |
Orin Grossman played Gershwin and Ellington at last Thursday's Y's Men meeting.
Last Thursday's featured speaker was world-renowned professor, musical interpreter and performer Orin Grossman.
He treated the audience to a lively lecture and spirited performance that would be the envy of any music student or music loving Y’s Man. His history of two music greats, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington, with selections of their music to an SRO Sanctuary audience made for a delightful Thursday meeting.
And this isn’t his first time headlining these two music giants. Grossman has played their compositions in halls from Fairfield University’s Quick Center to New York’s Carnegie Hall. His first love is the music of George Gershwin. He’s played Gershwin songs and classical compositions around the world. And his choices to perform for the Y’s Men were classic, climaxed by a discussion and performance of Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Looking for a Boy.”
And his performance obbligato by “The Duke,” featured “Swampy River” and “Single Petal of a Rose.”
It is clear that Professor Grossman is a must to return for an encore.

Don’t Get Cheated by a Charity
On October 15, the Internal Revenue Service warned all taxpayers that fraudsters are exploiting disaster victims and soliciting donations as fake charities in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
While stealing your donations, the scams may also be harvesting your personal and financial data for identity theft and other types of fraud.
The FBI and IRS are taking this very seriously. Rather than re-phrase or summarize their great advice, arm yourself against these soulless thieves and read the short website Charity and Disaster Fraud — FBI
Be generous but don’t be gullible.

You may be able to read this, but many others can’t.
They need your help, and now it’s easy for you to give it to them.
Please bring your unused glasses, whether prescription or just readers, and drop them in the donation box at a Thursday morning meeting.
The more pairs you bring, the more people you help, so bring in those unused glasses, or you will have to answer to Jon Fox.

Meanwhile, don't forget to get vaccinated for Covid and flu. The CDC says both diseases are major killers: Covid, still third after heart disease and cancer; flu is fifth. Now is the time to get both shots at the same time, perfectly safe for most but check with your provider.
