Y's Men Travel Group Meets Tomorrow at Noon

The next meeting of the Y's Men Travel Group will be tomorrow (Monday, September 16) from Noon to 1:30 pm in Rooms 109-110 at the Church. This is a change in time and room location from its normal meetings.

This will be a special meeting so even if you’re not a card-carrying Travel Group member you are most welcome to join us.

At this meeting several of our Group’s members will be presenting photos of their travels and talking about those images. Should be fun!

If you plan to bring a lunch just be aware that, depending on the numbers attending, we may not have room to set up tables so bring food that you can hold in your lap, or just eat before or after the meeting.

Additions continue to be made to the Y's Men Travel Reference Doc, located here

For information about the Y’s Men Travel Group, or to be added to the group’s email distribution list, please contact Art Mann, mannart03@gmail.com.

Noted Author Kostya Kennedy Speaks

To the Y’s Men About Jackie Robinson

Award-winning author and baseball historian Kostya Kennedy spoke to the Y’s Men last Thursday about the life and times of one of the most revered athletes in American History, Jackie Robinson. He provided much information about professional baseball and American society during the late 1940s and 1950s when Robinson starred for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Robinson was not only a great athlete, but through his grit and determination, he was an agent for change in the National Pastime and American culture itself.

Kennedy’s insightful look at Robinson’s career and cultural challenges was presented to the Y’s Men and is available through his book "True, The Four Seasons of Jackie Robinson." Click the button below to view the video of Kennedy's presentation which provides a great look at Robinson the man and his life, delivered by a true expert.

Time is Now to Get Your Flu and Covid Shots

Remember Covid? How easily we forget. But just three years ago we were hunkered down in our homes, nervous when someone came to the door with grocery or food deliveries: “Just leave it on the ground,” we said.

It’s still here. Just a month ago, we had a spike in CT, and this writer had three friends come down with the disease. They’ve all recovered.

Happily the big pharmas cook up new batches of vaccine every year to protect us from the new viral strains. Just as they have been doing every year for the seasonal flu. But the vaccine you got last year does you no good this year.

The CDC says both diseases are major killers: Covid, still third after heart disease and cancer; flu is fifth.

Now is the time to get both shots at the same time, perfectly safe for most but check with your provider.

You’re doing this not just for yourself but for every loved one and friend you come in contact with. Nearly all the chain and independent drugstores offer both vaccines, perhaps your own doctor, too.

Medicare absorbs all the costs for just about everybody covered but check to avoid a surprise medical bill.

Get vaccinated. . .stay well.

Y's Man Steve Taranko Helps Bring

Ukraine Art Exhibit to Senior Center

Ukraine Art Exhibit at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

The new Ukraine Art Exhibit at the Westport Center for Senior Activities features the unique War Stamps designs of Ukraine and other artifacts. Y's Man Stephan Taranko helped bring the exhibit to the Center. It is located in a display case halfway down the main aisle, and will be in place until the end of September.

In addition, Steve, along with Ross Voytovych and Mark Yurkiw, has spent nearly three years sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine through the generosity of the people of Fairfield County. The exhibit features the now world-famous stamp designs that have also helped Ukraine fund its war expenditures. They hope to continue to send medical equipment, and other needed supplies to Ukraine. The exhibit further explains their humanitarian efforts.
