GIDG Meets Tomorrow with Focus on Africa Issues

The Global Issues Discussion Group (GIDG) meets tomorrow (Monday, September 23) at 9:00 am in Rooms 203/204 in the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Y's Man Frank Wood, who lived and worked in Africa for nearly 40 years, will lead the discussion.

"There are plenty of issues in Africa to discuss," Frank said. He was involved with activities and business there from 1960 to 1996. During that time, he lived and worked in Nigeria and Ghana, and implemented a new Union Carbide management system in The Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan and South Africa. After that he led environmental audit teams funded by USAID (United States Agency for International Development) to Egypt and Zimbabwe.

There is an enormous amount of current information on the internet about all areas of Africa, he noted. Cruising through some of it will bring you up to date.

For more information, contact Frank Wood at fwood227@gmail.com.

Y's Men Ping Pong Group Plays Mondays at Senior Center

Remember when you first saw the Chinese ping pong team? The shock that this could actually be the same game we played in the basement. The actual table was just a postage stamp piece of the playing field that extended a good ten yards on each side of it.

The Y's Men's Table Tennis/Ping Pong Group do not stand up against the table, either, and are moving farther away with meetings every Monday at the Westport Center for Senior Activities from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. New members are absolutely welcome.

The new Group Leader is Y's Man Steve Eliot, who thanks Y's Man Tom Lowrie for leading the Group since it began. Steve is exploring forming a Y's Men Ping Pong team for matches with other local senior men's groups. More active players are needed.

To play, you must register with the Center which takes only a minute.

For information, contact Steve Eliot at steliot@aol.com.

Alisyn Camerota Discussed Her New Book “Combat Love”

At Last Thursday's Weekly Meeting

Alisyn Camerota addressing the Y's Men last Thursday.

Thursday's weekly Y's Men's meeting featured Westport author, journalist and CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota in a wide-ranging interview by Y's Men President Bruce Borner about her new book, "Combat Love," and the drilling down into the state of TV journalism in these highly partisan times.

The book is the story of her growing up and adolescent years, and how her free-range upbringing led to the anchor desk in network television. And she was accurately presented as a role model for those who follow in her footsteps toward careers in broadcast news.

For a copy of "Combat Love," contact Y's Man Dick Kalt at dickkalt@gmail.com. The special Y's Men's price of $15.00 remains in place until this Friday, September 25.

Because of a technical difficulty, a video with sound of Thursday's meeting is unavailable at this time. Should that change, it will be announced in the newsletter.

Broadway Comes to Westport at This Thursday's Meeting

Barry Kleinbort, lyricist, and Kim Maresca, musical theater star.

At next week's Thursday morning meeting on September 26, Broadway comes to Westport (at least to the Y's Men) featuring lyricist Barry Kleinbort and musical theater star Kim Maresca. Together they will bring music and song to the Saugatuck Congregational Church's Sanctuary, performing memorable songs and providing a peek behind the curtain demonstrating how Broadway performances go from good to great.

The grand piano, Barry's work, and Kim's voice promise to make the meeting a smash hit. Your seat is reserved. Don't miss this one.

Put Your Partner in the Y’s Men Loop!

Add Them to Our Newsletter Email List

We all know the truth but sometimes don’t like to admit it. Our partner (wife, friend, co-habitant, personal assistant, nurse, etc.) is in charge of our social schedule.

And it has always been so. “Our Town” writer Thornton Wilder said so in his Newport book, “Theophilus North” set in 1923: The men run the clubs and the major do-good organizations. The women run the houses and the social schedule (to paraphrase).

So after years of listening to a miffed “You didn’t tell me about that,” here’s your easy way out from under. Be the hero by sharing! Keep your partner informed about all our fun by sending us a second email address for our newsletter distribution.

You know the old expression: “Happy wife, happy life.”

Take 30 seconds now to add a second email - it's that easy!

Do it now since you know you’ll forget about it later. No more missed opportunities. Now more big events selling out before you can agree to order.

Hoot Owls Looking for Y's Men Who Like to Sing

The Hoot Owls, the Y's Men singing group, has invited other Y's Men to join them as they perform at nearby local venues. This past Friday, they appeared at Atria Darien, an assisted living facility, and are scheduled there again in December and March.

If you are interested in singing (reading music not necessary) and entertaining local seniors, please consider joining the Hoot Owls. Contact Hoot Owls Chair Bob Leng at 978-289-0940 or leng_7@msn.com. Bob comments, "Come join us. It's lots of fun."

Time is Now to Get Your Flu and Covid Shots

Remember Covid? How easily we forget. But just three years ago we were hunkered down in our homes, nervous when someone came to the door with grocery or food deliveries: “Just leave it on the ground,” we said.

It’s still here. Just a month ago, we had a spike in CT, and this writer had three friends come down with the disease. They’ve all recovered.

Happily the big pharmas cook up new batches of vaccine every year to protect us from the new viral strains. Just as they have been doing every year for the seasonal flu. But the vaccine you got last year does you no good this year.

The CDC says both diseases are major killers: Covid, still third after heart disease and cancer; flu is fifth.

Now is the time to get both shots at the same time, perfectly safe for most but check with your provider.

You’re doing this not just for yourself but for every loved one and friend you come in contact with. Nearly all the chain and independent drugstores offer both vaccines, perhaps your own doctor, too.

Medicare absorbs all the costs for just about everybody covered but check to avoid a surprise medical bill.

Get vaccinated. . .stay well.

Y's Man Steve Taranko Helps Bring

Ukraine Art Exhibit to Senior Center

Ukraine Art Exhibit at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

The new Ukraine Art Exhibit at the Westport Center for Senior Activities features the unique War Stamps designs of Ukraine and other artifacts. Y's Man Stephan Taranko helped bring the exhibit to the Center. It is located in a display case halfway down the main aisle, and will be in place until the end of September.

In addition, Steve, along with Ross Voytovych and Mark Yurkiw, has spent nearly three years sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine through the generosity of the people of Fairfield County. The exhibit features the now world-famous stamp designs that have also helped Ukraine fund its war expenditures. They hope to continue to send medical equipment, and other needed supplies to Ukraine. The exhibit further explains their humanitarian efforts.
