FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS

OAKLAND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

OAKLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

The Oakland Police Department reminds residents that a few simple steps can go a long way toward protecting your personal information, finances, and online accounts.

Cybercriminals frequently use fraudulent emails, text messages, phone calls, and websites to trick people into providing passwords, financial information, or other personal information. Taking a few basic precautions can help reduce your risk:

  • Use strong, unique passwords for your online accounts and consider using a password manager.
  • Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) whenever available, especially for email, banking, and financial accounts.
  • Keep your devices and software updated and enable automatic updates when possible.
  • Think before you click. Be cautious of unexpected emails, text messages, links, attachments, or requests for personal information.
  • Verify suspicious requests independently. If a bank, business, government agency, or even someone you know contacts you unexpectedly asking for money or information, contact them using a phone number or website you already know to be legitimate.

Scammers continue to change their tactics, but basic cybersecurity habits remain one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family.

Throughout October, take a few minutes to review the security of your accounts and talk with family members about staying safe online.

For additional cybersecurity tips and resources, visit CISAโ€™s Secure Our World resources at cisa.gov.

If you receive a suspicious message, phone call, email, or other communication, believe you may have been the victim of a scam, or simply have questions about something that does not seem right, please contact the Oakland Police Department for assistance.

MAVERICK'S LEGACY LIFE VAC

Thanks to a generous donation from Maverickโ€™s Legacy, every Oakland Police Department patrol vehicle is now equipped with a LifeVac airway clearance device. An Oakland detective worked with the organization to secure the donation, providing this potentially lifesaving equipment to the Police Department at no cost to the Borough or its taxpayers.

LifeVac is a non-powered airway clearance device designed to assist during choking emergencies when standard choking-response methods have been unsuccessful. By placing a device in every patrol vehicle, Oakland officers will have another potentially lifesaving resource readily available while responding to emergencies throughout the community.

While we hope these devices are never needed, the Oakland Police Department is grateful to have another tool available to help protect our residents and visitors.

We extend our sincere thanks to Maverickโ€™s Legacy for its generosity and commitment to helping communities become better prepared for choking emergencies.

Join the Honorable Gregg A. Padovano and Honorable Menelaos W. Toskos for a fascinating virtual tour through the history of the Bergen County Courthouse and intriguing insights into its justice system.

Additionally, the Justices will cover the early history of the Bergen County Courts, including when Oakland (then known as the Ponds / Yawpough) served as the center of Bergen County justice during the American Revolution.

The Bergen County Courthouse built between 1910 and 1912, is an architectural and historical gem. A stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture, it features imposing Corinthian columns, intricate stonework, and a majestic dome topped. The Courthouse is one of Bergen Countyโ€™ most recognizable landmarks.

Inside, the courthouse is adorned with historic murals and majestic architectural details depicting justice, law, and civic duty, adding to the Courthouseโ€™s artistic and historical significance.

For over a century, the courthouse has been the center of justice in Bergen County, playing a key role in landmark cases and shaping New Jerseyโ€™s legal history. Due to its architectural beauty and cultural importance, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its legacy for future generations.

Donโ€™t miss this opportunity to explore Bergen Countyโ€™s rich legal history with esteemed members of the judiciary!
