Welcome to the Week of August 30, 2020
Dear Families,

Thank you for all the effort you've put into your student's success in our first two weeks of school and the feedback you have given us. We appreciate your time and patience as we all try to navigate and become masters of online education. We know this kind of education has not been easy on everyone- students, families, and teachers alike. We are working tirelessly to improve distance learning and to prepare our teachers to be able to teach your scholars on campus and online simultaneously beginning September 21st.

As we look forward to this week, we invite you to join us for our Upper School Town Hall on Facebook Live, Thursday, September 3rd, focusing on our return to campus. In particular, we hope to address your questions. Please submit any questions you may have using the link found below. Also below you will find an update on distance learning in response to family feedback. Please continue sending your thoughts along.
Yours in Partnership,
Michael Cowan
Headmaster, Upper School
Great Hearts Irving

Distance Learning Update

In response to student and parent feedback, we are instituting changes in our distance learning program that will allow for greater engagement and more regularity in your child's schedule. First, we are calibrating our teachers' video scheduling so as not to overload any one day of the week with videos. Second, to increase interaction between students and teachers, students might have more short Zoom classes in place of recorded instructional videos.
MAP Growth Testing

Thank you for your patience with MAP Growth Testing. Below you will find a message from our Testing Coordinator, Steven Mapes, and a schedule for MAPS Growth Retakes this Week.
Mustang Athletics

Let’s get ready for the 2020-2021 seasons!
All fall and winter sports have been updated on the Great Hearts website.
Please visit often for any changes and contact our Athletic Director, Gary Gray, (gary.gray@greatheartsirving.org).
2019-2020 Yearbooks are
Still Available!

We have copies of the 2019-2020 Yearbooks ready and available for purchase! Please visit the front desk at the Upper School to purchase your own copy and relive the memories of the 2019-2020 school year! If you pre-ordered a copy and have not yet received it, please visit the front desk to pick up your reserved copy.
10th Grade PSAT Update

While we normally have both 10th and 11th grade students taking the PSAT in the Fall, the 10th grade students will not take their practice PSAT until the Spring.

Keep a look out for more information from our
College Counselor, Priscilla O'Neill, (priscilla.oneill@greatheartsirving.org).
GHI Senator Applications

With a new year beginning, we look forward to welcoming a new group of Senators to lead our student body! Each year, two senators are selected from each House. Senators must be 9-12th grade students with a desire and willingness to lead their classmates for the 2020-21 school year.
Applications are due Friday, September 4.
Distance Learning Meals

For families who will continue Distance Learning after September 8th, we are committed to providing meals for students. Throughout Distance Learning, families can order meal boxes containing 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches per student per week. Reach out to Patrick Malone (Patrick.Malone@GreatHeartsIrving.org) with questions.
Orders for Weeks 4-9 are due Monday 8/31.
Attendance in Google Classroom

All students have been invited to and must join the “GHI US Daily Attendance” Google Classroom. For State Attendance, students should check in by 9:05am each day before proceeding to their other classes. It is imperative that we have an accurate attendance count so we are able to receive proper funding from the state in order to continue educating your students!
Upper School Week Ahead

This year we are asking families to opt in to receive our weekly newsletter.
Beginning next Sunday, September 6, only families who have signed up through the link below will receive the Upper School Week Ahead.
Ways You Can Help

Substitute Teachers

Due to the current state of affairs, we anticipate an increased need for:
  1. Short and long-term substitutes
  2. Athenaeum teachers and assistants
  3. Teachers available to fill mid-year openings

Opportunities to Give

People like you help us do what we do best! During these uncertain times, we would like to thank all our parents, grandparents, and friends for their support of the Community Investment Campaign. Your continued generosity ensures our teachers and staff have everything they need to offer this amazing education. Your dollars fill financial gaps. Give what you can for your child. Every dollar makes a difference.

We also invite our entire community to participate in this year's North Texas Giving Day. Mark your calendar, give what you can, and make a lasting impact on your child’s education. 1 day, 18 hours, an outpouring of support for our wonderful school. Be part of the excitement!
For more information on Community Investment or North Texas Giving Day, please visit greatheartsirving.org/give or contact our Director of Academy Giving at Keo.Strull@greatheartsirving.org.
