Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze will feature nearly 30 paintings by Denver-born artist Jordan Casteel, who is now based in Harlem, New York. This presentation represents Casteel’s first major museum exhibition, and provides audiences with a first look at new work by one of the most acclaimed emerging artists working today.
The exhibition will bring together a body of work made from 2014 to 2018, with new paintings that reveal Casteel’s evolving practice and a shift in subject matter ranging from cityscapes and subway scenes to women and local business owners. Casteel’s approach to selecting subjects involves walking around her neighborhood and taking photographs. By transforming these photographs into larger-than-life portraits with subtle shifts in light, bold colors, and gestural brushwork, Casteel reveals individuals and atmospheres that often go unnoticed.

Thru Aug 24| 10:00 am - 6 pm | Museo de las Americas | Gen. Adm.
Liminal Space is a transitional or transformative space. A waiting area between one point in time and space and the next. Just like how our cultures and communities are diverse and varied, so too is the beautiful, enchanting and creative history of art. Thankfully being Latino isn't just a singular experience and in this exhibition you will see how these creative local artists are taking the knowledge and tradition of the past and its experiences and transforming our perceptions about cultural interpretations and identities into something that is new and original.
In this exhibition, the artists and their creative vision represent a basis of exploration for the audience's own Liminal Space, through which they develop a sense of their own experience and interpretation. It is easy to fall under the illusion that looking at art is a simple thing. However, the work in this show is not about what are you looking at but what is it you see.

Thru Aug 25 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | Denver Museum of Nature & Science | Gen. Adm.

There's a place from which nothing escapes, not even light, where time and space literally come to end. It's at this point, inside this fantastic riddle, that black holes exert their sway over the cosmos … and our imaginations.
In this Museum-produced show, zip through other-worldly wormholes, experience the creation of the Milky Way Galaxy, and witness the violent death of a star and subsequent birth of a black hole. Mathematical equations, cutting-edge science, and Einstein's theories fill in holes along the way, providing the most complete picture yet on this mysterious phenomenon. Can you feel the pull?

Originally from Boston, stand-up comic Sam Jay is an Emmy Nominated Writer for Saturday Night Live and frequently appears in sketches. She was named one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch for 2018.”
Most recently, Sam made her Netflix debut on The Comedy Lineup and released her album Donna’s Daughter through Comedy Central Records. Donna's Daughter was produced by Coach Tea and contains sporadic beats and “skit-like” interludes that make it sound as much like a hip-hop mixtape as it does a stand-up record. Sam wrote for The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards and the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Sam’s recent TV credits include a recurring role on TV Land’s Nobodies and a guest star in Season 5 of Comedy Central’s Broad City.
She was a stand-out of the Just For Laughs: New Faces. Sam was the host of Ricking Morty, the Rick and Morty post-show on Adult Swim and she was a cast member of MTV’s SafeWord. Sam made her late-night television debut on ABC’s Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel and her half-hour stand-up Comedy Central Presents premiered in 2017 to rave reviews. Sam’s other television and film credits include a part in the award-winning film Pinsky, Starz’s Take My Wife, Comedy Central’s White Flight, Comedy Central’s The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, as well as Viceland’s Party Legends and Flophouse.

Clownfish (“Best of Fringe”, Nugget Fringe) is an hour of comedy and storytelling exploring sex, gender, identity, and other black-and-white topics. Trevor Wade (they/them;The Moth StorySlam winner) mixes tales of misguided affection and botched romance with cutting observations about this divide we’ve erected between “man” and “woman”. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t fit in the boxes, if your option was not listed on the drop-down menu, if you want to learn more about this national conversation we’re having about gender, if you know what all the letters in LGBTQIA stand for, if you had no idea we were up to that many letters, if you’re open to a new point of view, if you want to trick a bigot, if you’re looking for a unicorn, come see this show. It’s honest as all get-out, glam as Hell, as weird as America, and also happens to rhyme. I promise not to disappoint (unless you’re my dad).

Y’all know what it is!!! Rapscallions has been doing its thing at Voodoo for a little over a year now, and I am very proud of how much the team has grown in that relatively short amount of time. What started as a niche/specialty show with around six members has grown into a weekly staple at Voodoo with its own dedicated fanbase and over 20 members on roster. We were accepted into the New York Musical Improv Festival. Comedy, culture, music, energy, HIP HOP, FREESTYLE, MADNE$$!!

Stylistically manic, artistically brilliant, AJ Finney is an eclectic Midwesterner with a passion for the psychedelic scene of the Sixties. Comedy, jam bands and Volkswagens — that’s him.
He’s an eco-friendly, improvisational, sometimes philosophical, patchouli-soaked quipster. AJ’s organic approach is refreshing and his poetic stream of consciousness style makes for a colorful and unforgettable comedic experience. His audience (much like the Deadheads) are finding him through alternative venues such as music festivals, head shops, and record stores.
AJ joined TJ Miller on his Meticulously Ridiculous tour in 2015. In 2014 AJ was crowned “Best of the Midwest” winner at Gilda’s LaughFest in Grand Rapids. He was also featured on the FOX television show Laughs, and was one of the 100 performers chosen for Season 8 of NBC’s Last Comic Standing. In 2013 he was a semifinalist in Comedy Central's Up Next. He was a finalist in the 2011 San Francisco International Comedy Competition. He was voted “Best in Fest” at the 2011 Detroit LaughFest and was a finalist in HBO’s Lucky 21 comedy competition.

Denver’s own Elliot Woolsey is making his Comedy Works headline debut!

Elliot’s high-energy, commanding stage presence, and relatable material has made him a rising star. He has been featured at The Great American Comedy Festival, High Plains Comedy Festival, and Telluride’s Blues and Brews Fest, where he entertained audiences with his tales of growing up in the suburbs of Denver as a lanky stoned Mormon.
You can catch Elliot all summer long at Red Rocks Amphitheatre where he is the host of Film On The Rocks.

Each member of the Bliss family has privately invited guests for the weekend, unbeknownst to anyone else. Wicked, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin — smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, Wicked — the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story that USA Today cheers is “a complete triumph. An original musical that will make you laugh, cry and think.”

Thru Jun 23 | Varies | Miners Alley Playhouse
Miners Alley Playhouse has commissioned award-winning playwright Josh Hartwell to write the compelling, untold, and true story of Mae Brussell, considered to be America’s first mainstream conspiracy theorist during the 1960's and 1970's. The one-time Queen of Conspiracy attracted an audience of thousands. Her radio shows analyzed public government records to link the JFK and RFK assassinations with the Watergate scandal. Loyal fans and celebrities looking to make sense of an increasingly complex, crazy world were hungry for Brussell's version of the truth. With humor and wit, Josh Hartwell's new drama, set in present-day Denver, imagines the family who inherits Brussell's legacy. The play also explores what a conspiracy is, and the difference between today's conspiracy theories and those of the past.

Monthly 4th Friday Thru Dec 27 | 11:00 pm | Denver's Dangerous Theatre

It's a raucous celebration of being able to recognize the shame in all of us. Because if we're all idiots, none of us are.

How to Communicate with Tact and Professionalism Training Seminar
Look around you. The true leaders in your organization are the people with the best communication skills.
Coincidence? Hardly. Experts now agree that the movers and shakers who climb the corporate ladder fastest are the ones who can relate easily with everyone…present their ideas with conviction (and charisma)…and emerge from almost every personal interaction on a high note.
Anyone who really wants to succeed can acquire these communication skills …
Upbringing, education, and talent aside, all good leaders share the same quality: superior communication skills. Either through observation, trial and error, or schooling from mentors, they've mastered the art of "connecting" with people in ways that almost always yield positive results…
  • They realize that diplomacy works far better than brute force.
  • They know how to help people "get it" the first time.
  • They can empathize, and they know how to get the support they need.
  • They don't waste time rehashing instructions or entering into arguments that go nowhere.
  • They listen first and act second — not the other way around.

A day that brings clarity to your payroll gray areas
Payroll processing sounds like a simple proposition. Employees work at a certain rate of pay. You take out taxes and give them the rest of what they've earned. Unfortunately, regulations regarding special benefits and other payments turn a simple task into a legal landmine. With this payroll management training, you'll gain strategies to handle payroll accurately, legally and with complete confidence.
What you don't know can hurt you. That's never more true than when dealing with payroll law. The first step to complying with regulations is understanding them. You'll begin your day with a crash course in payroll's legal basics. Find out what areas fall under state, federal and joint regulation and learn how to avoid the often staggering penalties and fines of non-compliance.

Congratulations to all who participated in the first two legs of the race series and welcome to those who will be joining us for the first time this Friday evening. In terms of Goldilocks, you have withstood a race in June with smoky air from surrounding wildfires as well as last month’s race which featured afternoon downpours. It is time to have a race that is “just right”, which it appears will be the case this time around. Best of luck to you all! What follows is some information concerning the race that seeks to address questions that you may have and to help you be best prepared.

50K has 3 start times. You do not need to sign up for your start time, you just show up at the best time for you. You determine what time you need to start based on your best guess when you will finish. If you are a new ultra-runner you should pick your start time based on how you finish in other running races you have done.  If you have never run a race before you should base your finish time on perhaps your training buddies and how you compare to them. If you are a strong athlete in another sport, you will likely be a strong runner in this new sport. It is important that the 6:00 a.m. start is reserved for the back of the packers. If you are running faster than 16 min mile average then you need to start at 7:00 a.m. If you are not a back of the packer and you start at 6:00 a.m. expect to have a conversation with Megan. She will not be happy with you.
