X12 Recommends Update of HIPAA Transactions to Latest Version, 008060. X12 submitted a letter to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) National Standards Group recommending the adoption of version 008060 of the electronic health care transactions already mandated under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Version 008060 is the latest published version of the HIPAA transactions. The specific transactions recommended are:
- 008060X322 Health Care Claim Payment/Advice (835)
- 008060X323 Health Care Claim: Professional (837)
- 008060X324 Health Care Claim: Institutional (837)
- 008060X325 Health Care Claim: Dental (837)
- 008060X329 Health Care Claim Status Request and Response (276/277)
- 008060X332 Health Care Eligibility/Benefit Inquiry and Information Response (270/271)
- 008060X333 Benefit Enrollment and Maintenance (834)
- 008060X334 Payroll Deducted and Other Group Premium Payment for Insurance Products (820)
- 008060X342 – Health Care Services Review – Request for Review and Response (278)
- 008060X340 - 277 Health Care Claim Request for Additional Information
- 008060X341 - 275 Additional Information to Support a Health Care Claim or Encounter
- 008060X343 - 275 Additional Information to Support a Health Care Services Review
Version 008060 implements improvements that support new business processes and improve data exchange. In the first quarter of 2026, X12 intends to provide change summaries and educational materials, including: (i) A comparison between the current version 005010 and version 008060; (ii) A list of enhancements in version 008060; (iii) Materials identifying transaction segments that were revised; (iv) A summary of mandated CAQH Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange Operating Rules that were integrated into version 008060; and (v) Educational webinars and other resources.
Each of the X12 implementation guides included in this recommendation has a corresponding derived schema definition that supports the direct representation of the transaction in XML syntax. X12 also recommended that use of the associated XML representation be named as compliant.

This is an ideal time for WEDI members to engage in workgroups coordinating the industry’s transition to 008060, including:
• Claims, Claim Status, Eligibility & Benefits, Remittance, and Attachments – to analyze workflow changes associated with the new 8060 IGs
• Prior Authorization, Patient Experience, and Emerging Technology – to align 8060 updates with parallel policy shifts such as CMS-0057-F and HTI-4
• Privacy & Security – to evaluate compliance considerations related to expanded data exchange
• Other WEDI Workgroups – to stay connected to cross-cutting issues influencing interoperability, data exchange, and operational readiness across the health care IT ecosystem
