West Virginia University announced Tuesday that the indoor mask requirement will be extended until Oct. 20, at which point administrators say they will reevaluate public health conditions.
Masks are required for all individuals, regardless of vaccination status. The previous requirement was announced in September and set to expire on Wednesday.
Hospitalizations in West Virginia remain high, but on-campus cases of COVID-19 and among employees and students are relatively low. The number of people in quarantine also remains low.
Almost 75% of University employees and 79% of students are fully vaccinated. WVU anticipates those numbers will see slight increases as individuals who received their first dose at the beginning of the semester get their second dose.

|
Masks are required in all WVU campus buildings and facilities. They are not required while in personal offices, vehicles, while eating or drinking or while exercising.
In accordance with federal guidance, masks continue to be required on the PRT and WVU buses through early 2022.

The Big 12 Conference has announced that it will allow schools to determine the amount given to student-athletes as education-related benefits following the U.S. Supreme Court decision in June.
"Following the court's decision in Alston, the board wanted to take time to assess the national landscape before determining how best to activate in this space," commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement.
|
|
"Today's action allows each Big 12 member institution the latitude to decide at the campus level the degree to which it provides education-related benefits and/or academic achievement awards or incentives to its scholarship student-athletes."
The amount is for educational benefits for student-athletes such as books, study abroad programs, room and board and more.

WVU held three bell ringing ceremonies this week to remember students who have died over the past year since the last bell ringing took place in February 2020.
The ceremonies were coordinated by the Office of Campus and Community Life and Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity.
Services began at noon at Oglebay Plaza on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday near the bell of the U.S.S. West Virginia on the downtown campus. All family, friends and members of the University community were invited to pay their respects.
“WVU is a community and that means, like any community, we experience loss,” Kim Mosby, senior associate dean of Campus and Community Life, said.
|
|
“The bell ringing ceremony is an important opportunity for us to come together to mourn, to honor those we’ve lost and to offer support to their friends, family and loved ones.”
The tradition had been put on hold over the past year in response to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. Normally only one student is honored during the ceremonies, but due to the lack of services, nineteen students were honored over three services.

Meet Bear, a 3-year-old Yorkie and Daschund mix. He likes heated blankets and playing tug of war. Bear's favorite thing to do is wear clothes- he's wearing his United States Postal Worker outfit in this picture. Bear hates rain and mail carriers (which is ironic given the outfit). Bear doesn't do many tricks, but he can jump very high, and his favorite treat is pancakes.
