The VPSL Column
Vice President for Student Life Evette Castillo Clark
Hello Students,

I hope you all had a chance to relax over the break and are feeling energized and motivated to close fall semester 2022 on a high note. It is hard to believe that we are fast-approaching December and Reading Days and finals are just around the corner!  I want to share a few student life office updates in and around the Student Center and Stewart-Odell that you will notice this week and as you return:

The renovation of Templeton Student Center has required patience from our whole community, and this Wednesday, November 30, the road in front of the building will open as a pedestrian footpath. When you get back to campus for spring semester, the remaining spaces in the Student Center will be open, the Pio and 39-TriMet buses will return to Templeton, and the lower Templeton parking lot will be back online! This will help to ease some of the parking constraints and challenges we’ve all felt this fall. Please lookout for signage in spring semester as it relates to renovated spaces, where to find offices and resources, and new opportunities to connect and build community. Thank you for helping make the student center your “go to” spot.

The first changes resulting from the Stewart-Odell renovation begin this week on Thursday, December 1, when the Office of Campus Living will be relocated from lower Templeton to Roberts Hall in the former Maggie's Cafe. Campus Living will be in this space from Friday, December 2, until late October 2023, when a new Campus Living office and residential front desk will open in Odell Hall. Over the winter break, Counseling Center staff and Health Promotion and Wellness staff with offices in Odell will be moving into the lower Templeton suite vacated by Campus Living for the duration of the project. Hours and locations for Counseling Center and Health Promotion and Wellness services will still be the same for the rest of this semester and further updates related to this move will be shared as we head into Spring semester. Lastly, other signs of the ramp up for the renovation (like fencing) will begin to appear the week of December 5, to avoid noise and impact during finals week. While Stewart-Odell will be fenced off during the project it should not impact Templeton Way, which will be open to pedestrian traffic, service vehicles, and public transportation. For the most recent updates, please be sure to review the first January Bark or other campus communications.

I will be hosting VPSL drop-in office hours this Friday, December 2, from 12 to 1 p.m. in Fields Dining Hall. Please join me to say hello, share your thoughts and experiences on student life, and what you look forward to during Spring 2023!

This is the last edition of The Bark for the 2022 year.  Good luck on final exams . . . finish strong!  Have a wonderful and safe holiday break, and I’ll see you in the new year!

Evette Castillo Clark
Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students

Announcements
ASB is considering a collaboration with Lyft to give students the opportunity to ride for less. Lyft offers several programs for universities to provide Lyft services to their students. The program ASB is considering to pursue is the Lyft Pass. This program acts like a coupon, where students will receive an email to their @lclark.edu to add vouchers to their Lyft wallet. With Lyft Pass, ASB has immense flexibility in creating program parameters. We can restrict the hours, pick-up/drop-off locations, ride type, and dates that Lyfts are made available.

Lyft Rideshare programs for universities vary in type; some use it for commuting, others use Lyft as a guaranteed late night ride home. ASB wants to make sure we create a Lyft rideshare program that best benefits the student body: how would you utilize Lyft? If you are interested, kindly answer this survey to help us determine how best to go about this collaboration based on your needs.
Apply for the Biden-Harris Student Loan Debt Relief program today! The debt relief application is now available online. Please visit the Financial Aid Office website for more information.

Submission deadline: March 15, 2023

The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students looks forward to presenting Student Life Staff Awards in Spring 2023. You are invited to nominate exceptional Student Life staff members today!
Submission deadline: December 9, 2022

Each semester Watzek runs a data visualization contest. We welcome submissions from any student who has created a data visualization, broadly-conceived, as part of their fall coursework. To enter, students will simply need to provide their visualization as an image file and separately prepare an abstract written for a public audience that accounts for the data presented and contextualizes their analysis. More details about preparing entries can be found here.  The deadline for the fall term will be December 9th, 2022.

As always, we welcome and encourage you to work with your students ahead of the deadline as they prepare their visualizations and abstracts. Additionally, to aid in the preparation of entries, this term Watzek will provide a data visualization workshop on Thursday, December 1st, at 4pm in the library classroom. Pizza and other refreshments will be available. Please pass this information along to interested students.

We strongly recommend students submit their work early so that they can receive feedback ahead of (and sometimes after) the deadline, and we reiterate that we encourage you to work with any interested students as they prepare entries.

Finally, I invite you to join us in celebrating the winner of last year's contest, Caelen Wilkie-Rogers, and runners-up, Eb Yahya, and Lauren Arriola. Their submission can be viewed on the LC DataStories website. The creativity of the submissions received last year - thanks to Brian House's students - meant that we expanded our conceptualization of the contest to a data "audio-visualization" contest. We look forward to seeing what we might receive this year.

If you have any questions about the contest, please reach out to myself [email protected] or Ethan Davis [email protected]
