Introducing a Brand New Student Leadership Position at LC

Welcome back students! While we are embarking on a new semester, we are also already making plans for the next academic year. We are excited to be launching a brand new student leadership position: the New Student Peer Mentor (NSPM) role. This is a unique opportunity to welcome new students to our college and help create a community where every student feels like they belong.

NSPMs will work with a group of new students during New Student Orientation. They will then continue to collaborate with this same group throughout the fall semester. Throughout the semester, NSPMs will check in regularly with their students in addition to planning a few events for their group (e.g., going to food carts in downtown Portland, attending a play together). You will receive compensation for fulfilling the responsibilities of this position.

One of the most significant factors in student success is other students. Peer-to-peer relationships are key to helping new students connect to the college and feel at home. We are looking for current students who want to help make a positive difference in the lives of new students. We encourage you to learn more and consider applying. Applications are due by February 6. There will be an informational meeting on January 31 at 3:30 p.m. in Templeton 238. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.

Jonathan Manz ([email protected]), Director of the First Year Experience
Franchesca Spann ([email protected]), Director of New Student Orientation

The Trail Room will be closing at 1pm on Friday February 3rd for our 2023 Senior Sioree later that afternoon. We are excited to hold this special annual event for the first time here, as our Senior class has played an active role in helping to shape the space for years to come.

We thank the non-seniors for their understanding that the Trail Room will not be available for dining or as a gathering space after 1pm and through the rest of the evening. Class of 2024, we will see you at your Soiree next year!

Lewis & Clark’s Health Service is partnering with getaflushot.com to offer an on-campus vaccine clinic in February. The new bivalent COVID booster (Pfizer) will be available at the clinic. As we continue to monitor COVID-19, guidance from the Oregon Health Authority, CDC, and World Health Organization informs us that a new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 will likely cause increased COVID cases in Oregon soon. Updated COVID-19 boosters help restore protection that has decreased since previous vaccination, and provide broader protection against recent variants.

Advance sign-ups are required. Questions? Email [email protected] for help.
Reusable Eco-Containers Available for Free!
This semester our partners at Bon Appetit will be starting a new initiative to supply reusable eco-containers that can be used at Fields Dining Hall.

Residents will be provided with their first container. Starting Monday, January 30th, residents can pick up a carabiner at the Campus Living office, or from 12-1 at the Campus Living info table in the 3rd-floor Templeton foyer. When you're ready to use a container, just swap out the carabiner at the Fields serving stations. Once you've used the container, either exchange it for a clean box, or trade it back in for another carabiner!

The first container/carabiner provided to you will be free, and recorded at the time of distribution. Replacement boxes/carabiners will cost $5 each.

Taylor Stewart graduated from the University of Portland in 2018 with a degree in Communication and a Master’s in Social Work from Portland State University in 2021. Taylor started the Oregon Remembrance Project in 2018 to help communities unearth stories of injustice and engage in the necessary truth telling and repair required to reconcile instances of historical harm.

His work connects historical racism to its present-day legacies in order to inspire contemporary racial justice action. In what started as simply a way to memorialize a man named Alonzo Tucker, the most widely documented African American victim of lynching in Oregon, Taylor has grown to see the power of reconciliation to rectify further instances of historical injustice.
