Special Guest Column
Last week’s Bark newsletter noted that it was the last issue of the term. This December 5 Bark issue, with important COVID-19 information, is actually the last one for Fall. Good luck on your finals and have a great holiday break.

Dear Students,

As we are near the end of fall semester and look towards spring, it’s important to reflect on what has happened over the past 14 weeks. Entering the 2022–23 academic year, many factors guided the development of the COVID-19 policies for our community, including the nature of the virus; national, state, and county guidelines; space and resources available on campus; and other higher education institutional guidelines. Thanks to each individual’s care for this community, the institution saw half as many COVID-19 cases this fall compared to the spring 2022 semester! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you and your continued efforts to support Lewis & Clark offering the in-person instruction and activities that are the hallmark of a Lewis & Clark education.

Looking forward, finals and winter break are rapidly approaching. We hope and encourage you to find pockets of self-care through this final push. The end of the semester also means that the majority of you will be embarking on some form of travel. We encourage you to continue to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms and test if you become symptomatic. Over the break, please continue to practice strategies to reduce the spread of COVID-19, such as using good hand hygiene, wearing masks in public places, and limiting crowd interaction whenever possible. If you are remaining on campus over the break, please complete the Student Positive COVID Test (PCT) Form if you test positive.

If you haven’t done so already, we encourage you to stay fully up-to-date with your COVID vaccines by receiving all booster doses recommended for your age group by the CDC. Vaccinations remain the leading prevention strategy to protect individuals from COVID-19 infection and decrease the severity of illness. Updated COVID-19 boosters help restore protection that has decreased since previous vaccination and provide broader protection against recent variants. You are eligible for the bivalent booster two months after any initial vaccine series or two months after a previous booster. Please refer to the CDC guidance for more information on booster eligibility and here to find a vaccination site near you

If you are a resident staying over the winter break, please go to this link for specific information on what to do if you test positive for COVID-19. As we start the new spring semester, our first Bark issue in January will have more COVID-19 updated information for students so be on the lookout as you prepare to return from your holiday break.

Again, thank you for all of your ongoing efforts to protect yourselves and others against COVID-19. We remain incredibly proud of how this community has come together over these last two and a half years. Working together, we will successfully navigate any new challenges that may arise in the upcoming semester. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact [email protected]

Announcements
The Princeton Review uses the results of its undergraduate surveys to help inform their write-up about LC (and to decide if LC has had enough responses to be included in some of their rankings). A copy of the current write-up can be found here, if you are interested. The survey consists of 81 questions, most of which are Likert scale. It should take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. Be honest! Answers are confidential; administration doesn't see the raw data at all.

The link for the survey is: https://secure.princetonreview.com/studentsurvey/Home/ugradsurvey and is also in this attached word document, which is the invitation from the Princeton Review.

As a reminder, this survey is not limited to only some students: Anyone at LC can take it and you can definitely share the invite with your friends!
FLU SHOTS still available ON CAMPUS! We have 59 vaccines left and have lowered the price from $30 to $10. Walk-ins welcome between 8am-12pm and 1-2pm in the Health Service office (below the Trail Room in Templeton). It's not too late to get vaccinated!
UPDATE: Student Loan Debt Relief Is Blocked
Courts have issued orders blocking the Department of Education’s student debt relief program, but they are seeking to overturn the court orders. As a result, the Department of Education is not accepting debt relief applications at this time. (Note: If you already applied, they will hold your application). To get updates and information about the Student Loan Debt Relief Program you are encouraged to Subscribe and check the federal website
ASB is considering a collaboration with Lyft to give students the opportunity to ride for less. Lyft offers several programs for universities to provide Lyft services to their students. The program ASB is considering to pursue is the Lyft Pass. This program acts like a coupon, where students will receive an email to their @lclark.edu to add vouchers to their Lyft wallet. With Lyft Pass, ASB has immense flexibility in creating program parameters. We can restrict the hours, pick-up/drop-off locations, ride type, and dates that Lyfts are made available.

Lyft Rideshare programs for universities vary in type; some use it for commuting, others use Lyft as a guaranteed late night ride home. ASB wants to make sure we create a Lyft rideshare program that best benefits the student body: how would you utilize Lyft? If you are interested, kindly answer this survey to help us determine how best to go about this collaboration based on your needs.

Submission deadline: March 15, 2023

The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students looks forward to presenting Student Life Staff Awards in Spring 2023. You are invited to nominate exceptional Student Life staff members today!
Submission deadline: December 9, 2022

Each semester Watzek runs a data visualization contest. We welcome submissions from any student who has created a data visualization, broadly-conceived, as part of their fall coursework. To enter, students will simply need to provide their visualization as an image file and separately prepare an abstract written for a public audience that accounts for the data presented and contextualizes their analysis. More details about preparing entries can be found here.  The deadline for the fall term will be December 9th, 2022.

As always, we welcome and encourage you to work with your students ahead of the deadline as they prepare their visualizations and abstracts. Additionally, to aid in the preparation of entries, this term Watzek will provide a data visualization workshop on Thursday, December 1st, at 4pm in the library classroom. Pizza and other refreshments will be available. Please pass this information along to interested students.

We strongly recommend students submit their work early so that they can receive feedback ahead of (and sometimes after) the deadline, and we reiterate that we encourage you to work with any interested students as they prepare entries.

Finally, I invite you to join us in celebrating the winner of last year's contest, Caelen Wilkie-Rogers, and runners-up, Eb Yahya, and Lauren Arriola. Their submission can be viewed on the LC DataStories website. The creativity of the submissions received last year - thanks to Brian House's students - meant that we expanded our conceptualization of the contest to a data "audio-visualization" contest. We look forward to seeing what we might receive this year.

If you have any questions about the contest, please reach out to myself [email protected] or Ethan Davis [email protected]
