Dear LC Community,

Spiritual Life is launching LC Group Nap, inspired by Tricia Hersey, the Nap Ministry, and her book Rest is Resistance. All students, staff, and faculty are invited to the Agnes Flanagan Chapel on Thursday afternoons between 12 pm and 4:30 pm.
In the fall, I was inspired by Tricia when I heard her interview on one of my favorite podcasts. Her way of speaking to our need to rest to resist the grind culture resonated deeply. Her inclusive theological viewpoint, to "honor the divinity of you as a human being" impacted me greatly. Her words also allowed me to see how grind culture interacts with our daily lives, the fact that we are not machines built to produce and contribute to capitalism.

Early in her book Rest Is Resistance Hersey argues that academia is a primary locus for grind culture. Students and faculty are asked to produce constantly in the name of scholarship. Employees are asked to produce more and more with less and less resources. As I live in the midst of this pandemic, I was feeling like a hamster on the wheel, being encouraged to keep running but never feeling rested, never feeling "caught up." Something needed to change.

The buzz began amongst the staff of Spiritual Life about the need of implementing Hersey's mission at Lewis & Clark. The Spiritual Life staff were not the only ones moved by Hersey's mission, shortly after hearing the podcast, a student shared a quote from Tricia Hersey's book at the Winter Holiday Seasons of Light Celebration. We knew there was a want from our community. If you are interested in reading Rest is Resistance, our Jewish Student Life Coordinator was so inspired she started a book club this month! (You can still join! Email Maddie at [email protected]).

Tricia Hersey's manifesto needs to be taken seriously for us to find joy and live in this moment. We wanted to bring this movement to our Lewis & Clark community. LC Group Nap is so much more than napping. This truly is a moment to change our lives, to be intentional, and to find liberation through rest. Join this resistance movement with me and come rest awhile.

Best,
Hilary Martin Himan

Office of Equity & Inclusion Presents LC's First Day of Diversity
March 13, 2023 | All day, all around campus
Lewis & Clark will celebrate its first Day of Diversity, on the 13th of March, 2023, presented by the Office of Equity & Inclusion! This year’s theme, “True to You”, celebrates a sense of authenticity that exists within us, formed by our unique experiences, backgrounds, principles, which also unites us as human beings. The idea of a "Day of Diversity" is to gather in support of standing up for oneself, one’s beliefs, expressions and encouraging tolerance and peace. It is also a day to celebrate the discomfort of finding who we are, and learning about what it means to be a part of a community. For the day, we are planning multiple events, including a cookout, a song writing workshop, a keynote speaker event, etc. to celebrate who we are and who we will become. Be sure to save the date!!
