June is National Pet Preparedness Month!
This is something many of us don't think about because we don't get a lot of severe weather here in Michigan (6" of snow is not severe :) But what if you have a fire in your home? Do you have an escape plan for your pets? A sticker in your window alerting firefighters there are animals in the home? What if an oil tanker spill caused an immediate evacuation in your neighborhood? What will happen to your pets if you die or are hospitalized? Hmmmm...definately something to think about. Here is a great article on
Pet Disaster Preparedness from the ASPCA.
Adopt A Shelter Cat Month- When I joined the Board of Directors at our local shelter, I was stunned to see over 300 homeless cats in the shelter!! This is kitten season and most shelters have a huge challenge on their hands this time of year. If you are looking for a new purr-friend, please consider adopting a kitty from your local shelter or rescue. My friend Janet Vormittag publishes an awesome free, monthly publication called
Cats and Dogs Magazine. Check it out, it has several rescues and shelters who spotlight the animals they have for adoption! You can read it right online
Here.
June 4- Hug your Cat Day- If you have a kitty cat, please remember to hug it everyday, but give it a special, loving hug on June 4...but DO NOT HUG YOUR DOG! Don't hug my dog??? You kidding me Deb??? No, I'm not kidding! Hugs are what we trainers call "Human Grade Affection"...it may feel good to you, but
please understand that hugging is a very unnatural and restricting body posture for dogs that most consider a dominance challenge If you have the right relationship with your dog, you may be able to get away with it, but you should never let a stranger or children to hug your dog and you should teach your children it is not safe to hug a dog! See the training side bar for an in depth article on why you should not hug your dog, that every dog owner should read and share!
