Hello Friends, 

It was an impactful week for Virginia’s Second District. While the House was out of session, my work on behalf of our community continued—both at home and on the international stage. I recently returned from a Congressional Delegation to Israel, where I met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the security challenges facing our strongest ally. These high-level discussions are vital to our national security and reinforce America’s leadership in promoting global stability, while safeguarding the interests of the servicemembers and military families here in Hampton Roads.

As the House returns to session, I look forward to voting for a consolidated appropriations package following amendments from the Senate. This would include funding for the Departments of War; Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development. I'm focused on delivering these investments that will advance defense priorities that strengthen our military, expand access to quality healthcare and education, and protect the economic vitality of Hampton Roads.

Unwavering Support for Israel’s Security

Last week I traveled to Israel with members of the House Armed Services Committee to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ambassador Mike Huckabee, and other Israeli defense leaders. We discussed security challenges in the Middle East, reconstruction in Gaza, and the importance of supporting Israel in its fight against terrorist regimes. Israel is America’s closest ally in the Middle East and we are proud to stand with Israel as they continue to recover from the October 7, 2023 terror attacks and move forward.

While in Israel, I had the opportunity to visit our servicemembers at the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CNCC), a U.S.-led coordination hub established following last October’s ceasefire. The CNCC plays a critical role in intelligence sharing and in coordinating U.S. forces, partner militaries, and humanitarian organizations to deliver aid to Gaza and support stability and reconstruction in the region.

Remembering the Six Million Lives Lost on Holocaust Remembrance Day

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we mourned the loss of the six million men, women, and children who perished during the Holocaust. We will never forget this senseless atrocity against humanity and continue to condemn antisemitism in our communities—standing firm against hatred in all its forms. 

Exciting Navy Announcements..!

I'm proud to share that the Navy has unveiled some noteworthy new developments. Last week, the USS John F. Kennedy departed Newport News to begin sea trials! I’m proud that shipbuilding crews here in Hampton Roads have helped to bring this Gerald R. Ford-class carrier to life and I know it will play a critical role in defending our nation for years to come….!

We also recently received word that the Commander, Navy Installations Command allocated $375 million to support restoration efforts and new projects for military housing. I'm grateful for the Barracks Task Force that made this investment possible to improve living conditions, strengthen readiness, and provide our servicemembers with the housing they deserve..!

Supporting Key Aviation Infrastructure Projects

The House-passed funding package included critical investments to modernize our aviation infrastructure and make travel safer for Americans. It delivers over $4.5 billion for airport improvements and resources to hire 2,500 new air traffic controllers to reduce delays, strengthen safety, and keep our skies moving...!

Weekly Poll

Thank you to everyone who participated in last week’s poll! I asked whether you believe the roads and transportation infrastructure across VA-02 are in need of repair. Approximately 85% of respondents said YES—and I couldn't agree more.

That is why I have remained focused on securing federal funding that delivers tangible improvements to our district. This year, I was proud to support critical investments for our community, including $10 million for upgrades to the I-264 and Independence Boulevard interchange to reduce congestion and $1 million for safety improvements to Pungo Ferry Road in Virginia Beach. Additionally, I’ve prioritized funding for stormwater and water infrastructure to mitigate flooding and protect our roadways from long-term damage.

I am committed to ensuring your tax dollars are used responsibly to improve safety, reduce commute times, and strengthen the infrastructure of Hampton Roads for the future.

Medal of Honor Recipient of the Week

This week, I would like to honor Medal of Honor Recipient Major Raymond Harrell Wilkins of the United States Army Air Corps (Medal of Honor action date: November 2, 1943).  

Wilkins was born September 28, 1917 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Major Wilkins demonstrated exceptional valor and leadership during an attack on enemy shipping in Simpson Harbor near Rabaul, New Britain, on November 2, 1943.

Aware of the intense anti-aircraft fire his squadron would face, he deliberately positioned his aircraft in the most dangerous place and adapted quickly when changing conditions forced a last-second revision of the attack plan. Despite his plane being heavily damaged, he refused to withdraw and continued leading the assault, successfully destroying an enemy destroyer and setting a large transport ablaze. Even after expending his bombs and while attempting to withdraw, Major Wilkins again exposed himself to extreme danger by attacking a heavy cruiser to draw its fire away from his squadron. His aircraft sustained catastrophic damage and ultimately crashed into the sea. Through his courage and self-sacrifice, Major Wilkins ensured the survival of the remaining aircraft and accomplished the mission against overwhelming odds. 

For prominent courage and heroism at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Major Wilkins was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. Major Raymond Harrell Wilkins lays in rest at the Olive Branch Cemetery ('In Memory' marker); A.B.M.C. Manila Cemetery (Wall of the Missing), Manila, Philippine Islands, Portsmouth, Virginia, United States.
