The Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost

October 25, 2026

Dear Friends,

The headlines are full of bad news, none of which needs to be repeated here. Besides, at Grace Church, we have very good news to report this week. Indeed, you may have seen it already if you walked by the church in the past few days. I refer, of course, to the disappearing scaffolding from the exterior south side of the building. For the first time since April of 2024, the view of the church from 10th St. is unencumbered. What this means for us on the inside is light. Let there be light! The four newly restored and cleaned south aisle windows now shine as brightly as the late October sun will allow them to shine. Come see for yourself on Sunday.

Short of a few items on the punch-list, the south aisle project is now finished. It has been a long, winding, and expensive journey, but in the end, an extraordinary feat of generosity on your part, and artistic skill on the part of the restoration team. Some years ago, when the city was emerging from the pandemic, members of the Fabric and Grounds Committee and the Vestry concluded that it was no longer acceptable for the south aisle to look the way it did. It was a visual wreck of peeling paint, crumbling plaster, and exposed wooden lath. At first, we thought the project would take about six months, and the scaffolding would come down by the fall. Then we started opening the 180-year old walls, only to find one surprise after another. We did not lose heart. We pressed on. Now it is time to celebrate, even though we still have plenty of scaffolding on the north side of the church.

Among those who stand to benefit from the view are the residents of Stewart House, the large condominium complex on the other side of 10th St. We love our friends at Stewart House, among whom we count several members of Grace Church. Earlier this week, someone shared a link to the real estate section of The New York Times, featuring homes for sale in Manhattan and Brooklyn. One of them was a lovely two-bedroom, two-bath unit in Stewart House with all the amenities one could want. The pros: 1. The floor plan allows for a third bedroom.  2. Residents can receive a discount in the parking garage. 3. The view of Grace Church, which is landmarked. Imagine that – our very presence is enhancing the real estate value of the neighborhood. Alas, then came the list of the cons: 1. The primary bath is small. 2. Grace Church has a school, which can be noisy.

Yes, children can be noisy. They are noisy on the playground and noisy on the play roof. Often they are noisy in church, in the midst of a worship service. Thanks be to God for noisy children. I have always considered baby noise in church to be happy noise. Message to parents of young children: Thank you for bringing them to church. You are doing a wonderful thing. Don’t lose heart. Press on. Take advantage of the children’s activity corner in the north aisle. Let them color in the pew. Check out children’s chapel. Nursery care is always available for the littlest of the little ones. As they grow, let’s make them cast members in the Christmas pageant, teach them to be acolytes, and sign them up for choir. The Rev. Eva Suarez, our new Associate Rector for children’s ministry is eager to meet with you and explore the possibilities.

Finally, a message to real estate agents who are worried about our noisy children: we love our noisy children. Don’t forget to warn your clients about our noisy bells. We love our bells, too. Wait till you hear them marking the hours and summoning us to worship.

See you in church.

2027 Annual Pledge Campaign: "The Bread of Life"

It's not too early to begin thinking and praying about your annual financial commitment to the work of the Lord through Grace Church in the coming year. Watch your mail at home this week for a letter, brochure, and pledge envelope. If possible, please bring your complete commitment (pledge) with you next Sunday and place it in the offering plate. Remember, you can take all of 2027 to fulfill your pledge, so it does not have to be a one-time only, all-at-once gift.

Spooky Stories from Scripture

Oct 25

10 – 10:45 am

Ghosts, witches, and all manner of monsters can be found in the Bible. In honor of Halloween, we’ll take a look at some of the figures and tales that have frightened and fascinated Christians for millennia. Did God make the things that go bump in the night? And how do we make sense of these stories as holy—or do we? The Rev. Eva Suarez leads the discussion at 10 am in the reception room, coffee and breakfast treats will be served.

Shojin Cooking Demonstration

Oct 25

12:45 – 4 pm

Tokyo-based chef and Buddhist monk Masami Asao will visit Grace Church for a Shojin cooking demonstration. We will learn to make miso soup and a selection of dashi (broths), and about the significance of tableware in Shojin cooking.

Bible Passages for Bad Days

Oct 25

6:45 – 8:30 pm

It’s not fun, but all of us have bad days. Can you think of a time when a family member wasn’t doing well, or work got you down, or the world was too much with you? Those days are hard to navigate, but thankfully Scripture is filled with wisdom and examples of how to traverse troubling times. Meeting a total of four evenings, this course will explore passages from the Bible along with other resources in a small group setting. Led by the Rev. James Morton, we will meet in the Chantry on Sunday nights immediately following the 6 pm service. No advance reading is necessary to participate. Refreshments served.
