We're also holding a costume contest at 5pm, with prizes for Best Market Themed Costume, Funniest, and Most Creative. Then at 6, we're closing out the season with a jack o'lantern contest and lighting ceremony. Pick up a pumpkin this week at the market and bring back your carving masterpiece on October 25! After the contest, we'll light all the pumpkins up as we bid farewell to another great farmers' market season.

Nowadays celery is more often eaten as a versatile crunchy snack--with peanut butter, a sprinkle of salt, or as an addition to your crudite platter. Central Illinois Farm Beginnings
Classes start October 22
Applications are open for our year-long farmer training program. Now entering its 12th year of creating successful farm businesses, Central Illinois Farm Beginnings (CIFB) gives aspiring farmers the opportunity to write a plan for the development of their farm business over the course of nine winter classes and with the guidance of expert farmers from the region. After the completion of the coursework, students are matched with a mentor farmer as they begin their first year of production. We're teaming up with experts Leslie Cooperband and Wes Jarrell of Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery to bring you answers to your milk selling questions.  Two sequential half-day workshops lead you through legal regulations, milk handling equipment, feed formulations for milk quality, and the economics of bringing milk from the udder to the table. Bloog Farming Foibles: Winter is Coming, part 1
Some of you are only excited about the coming of winter in the context of a certain HBO series; however, there are others that love sitting by a roaring fire on a cold day.  I enjoy both a great deal, and luckily, we have a roaring fire most days in the winter because we prefer to heat our home with wood.  A quote from Aldo Leopold comes to mind when I think about what many would consider to be our somewhat odd (or at least labor intensive) choice:  "There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace."  Luckily, our spirits are no danger whatsoever ... nope, not even a tiny bit.   

Of course, a roaring fire can be somewhat tricky to build if you aren't a pro, or don't have access to the right fire-starting materials.  So, let's focus on just one of those materials today -- kindling.   Please drop those twigs, recycle that newspaper, and step away from the shelf of fatwood and wax pellets at the store.  I'm here to tell you how to grow kindling worthy of a true pyromaniac.   Read the rest of Birgit's blog here.

Do you want to farm?  Do you have land but not the skills to tend to it?  Have you wondered what it would be like to spend a summer growing food for a community surrounding a farm?  

Our apprenticeship is designed to give individuals with the desire to farm and grow food an opportunity to do that on a production scale to make a living.  We offer housing & monthly stipend in exchange for a full season commitment. 

We raise mixed produce for CSA, farmer's markets and wholesale customers.  We'll work side-by-side from seed to sale in hopes that you finish the season with a solid grasp of what it takes to run a small farm. Interns are expected to work quickly and efficiently in good and bad weather, to ask questions, and to learn from mistakes. Stipend starting @ $800/month and food from the farm as well as shared housing for the right candidate.
