Volleyball Recap
The Heritage volleyball team took on the Pathway Panthers in the Eagles opening match of the season. In the 5/6 game many girls were playing in their first volleyball game ever. We worked on getting the jitters out the first set, falling 10-25. Our goal the second set was to hustle after the ball more and improve our score from the first set, which we did, only falling 16-25. I am looking forward to seeing how much these girls will improve throughout the season. In the 7/8 match, the girls played very competitively with the Panthers. In the first set, we were up 11-6 after a string of serves by Elyse Anderson. But Pathway climbed back into the game, and the Eagles fell 21-25. In the second set, the Eagles found themselves in a hole late, but persevered to even up the score and extend it to extra points. In the end, the girls fell to Pathway 25-27. The 7/8 team was led by Kaelyn Van Otterloo with four kills and a block, while Adelyn Hunter and Grace Barnes led the team with many digs to keep the plays alive.
On Tuesday, the Heritage Eagles traveled to Trinity Lutheran in Cedar Rapids. In the 5/6 match, the girls showed improvements in both their serving and hustle after the ball. Throughout set one the girls would get in a bit of hole, but persevered to climb back and close the gap. In the end the team fell in both sets to Trinity with scores of 22-25 and 12-25. The 7/8 match had great serving from the Eagles as well as several back and forth volleys and Heritage was able to win those points several times. The Eagles had 17 ace serves in the match, with Elyse Anderson leading the way with 8 service aces. The team on the bench propelled us forward with great cheering for their teammates. It was a fun match to watch with the Eagles winning in two sets, 25-18 and 25-14.
Heritage traveled to Cedar Valley this past Thursday. The 5/6 match was their closest one of the season so far. The girls continued to show growth in their skills. They really worked on moving their feet and hustling after the ball. The girls won their first set 25-22, which was their first set win of the season. The second set, the girls fought hard and pushed the set to extra points, but fell 24-26. The game went to a deciding third set, where they found themselves in the lead, but couldn’t quite hold on, falling 13-15. The 7/8 team once again had another great showing, becoming more and more comfortable with their positions on the court. The Eagles defeated the Huskies in two sets 25-14 and 25-15. The team had 19 ace serves; each of the six servers recorded at least one ace serve, with Grace Barnes leading the way with 9 of them. Kaelyn Van Otterloo led the team in kills with 7.
Our first home games of the season are this coming week. Come out on Monday and Tuesday, October 7 and 8 to cheer on the Eagle volleyball teams!
