News and Updates from HCS

No School - Friday & Monday, Oct 11 & 14

A reminder we have a long weekend coming up. Tomorrow is an In-Service Day for the teachers as Matt Berka from Southwest Christian High School will be coming to talk about FLEx projects. Matt has been a part of Teaching for Transformation for the last 8 years and we look forward to hearing his insight as we continue to develop and implement engaging learning experiences that help our students discover their place in God's world.

Monday, the 14th, is a break for everyone as we gear up for the 2nd half of the 1st trimester!

Picture Days

Student portraits will be taken next Wednesday, October 16 (PK-3rd grades) & Thursday, October 17 (4th-8th grades). If you wish to place an order for the school portraits you may either return the paper order form (coming home in Friday folders today) or place an order online using the link listed below.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child (sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse) helps provide for needy children worldwide and is a great opportunity to give out of the abundance that God has given to us. This year, each PRE-K – 5th GRADE CLASS will be filling two shoeboxes to send, and collections will take place between October 15 and November 8. Here’s how you can help:

  • Each class will fill two shoeboxes (one for a girl and one for a boy)
  • We are asking every Heritage student to bring in $3 (or MORE to cover for those students that don’t bring money in) to help cover the shipping and handling cost ($10 for each shoebox).
  • Ideas for what to include in shoeboxes can be found at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/
  • Donate any of the following items by bringing them to the school (check your child’s classroom newsletter for details):
  • SMALL toys (that can fit in a small shoebox) – small cars, dolls, stuffed animals, yo-yos, jump ropes, toys that light-up or make noise, etc. PLEASE, NO WAR-RELATED TOYS OR BREAKABLE ITEMS.
  • School supplies – pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, coloring books, writing pads or paper, solar calculators
  • Hygiene items – toothbrush, mild bar soap, comb, brush, washcloths, etc. (NO TOOTHPASTE)
  • Other miscellaneous items that a child would enjoy – watches, picture books (no words), sunglasses, flashlights (with extra batteries), ball caps, socks, T-shirts, hair clips, etc. (NO CANDY OR FOOD of any kind!)
  • DO NOT INCLUDE: USED OR DAMAGED ITEMS, WAR-RELATED ITEMS, CANDY OR FOOD, TOOTHPASTE, LIQUIDS OR LOTIONS, MEDICATIONS OR VITAMINS, BREAKABLE ITEMS SUCH AS GLASS, OR AEROSOL CANS

Volleyball Recap

This past week the Heritage volleyball teams finally got to play on their home court. On Monday, the Eagles faced LIS from Williamsburg. Strong serving from the 5/6 Eagles propelled them to an easy first set win, 25-13. The second set was a close game, but the Eagles fell 22-25. In the deciding third set, the Eagles built a lead, but Williamsburg fought their way back in to keep the score close. A clutch serve at the end helped the Eagles win third set (15-12) and first match of the season! The 7/8 team continued their strong serving with 21 ace serves to win the match in two sets 25-16, 25-9. While their first set didn’t find the Eagles playing their best volleyball, they were able to work together to pull out the win, and their strong serving came out in set two for quick win. Kaelyn Van Otterloo led the team with 4 kills, 5 ace serves, and 2 blocks.

On Tuesday, the Eagles faced Valley Lutheran from Cedar Falls. It started off a little slow as serves over the net were hard to come by for both teams, but the Eagles were able to turn it around getting many ace serves. They won the game in two sets with scores of 25-7 and 25-16. The 7/8 Eagles team, worked fairly quickly to win both sets with scores of 25-10 and 25-16. The Eagles once again surpassed their number of aces in a game with 24 ace serves. Adelyn Hunter led the way with 9 ace serves. Way to go Eagles!
