So Much Joyful Anticipation
Dear Church,

It is so good to be back with you! Thank you for the generous and sustainable employment practices you offer, which allowed me to take the month of July off. My family and I enjoyed a 4-week road trip to the East Coast, visiting friends and family and soaking in the beauty of the North Carolina beaches and the rolling hills of Western New York. Visits to the Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore and DoodleHatch, Blue Mounds State Park, and the Wright Brothers National Memorial rounded out the trip, reconnecting me with wonder, beauty and the imperative of imagination.

When I returned to the church building, there was so much to notice!

  • A basketball hoop in the side parking lot and a basket of jump ropes and balls met me by the parking lot door - all used by the Freedom School scholars, the first occupants of our building.
  • A late night stroll through the sanctuary and social hall revealed a bare floor (no more mustard yellow carpet!!!), fresh paint and an accessible chancel almost fully constructed, and light and air streaming into the social hall through the re-widened staircase in the lower narthex.
  • Dedicated church volunteers caring for our grounds on Tuesday morning - engaging in “weed therapy”, as they called it :)
  • Inspectors in the building on Tuesday, making way for Grace Neighborhood Nursery School’s arrival, as we prepare to share our space with them beginning August 13.
  • Pallets of material, lifts and scaffolding in the side parking lot, as the installation of solar panels on the roof of the religious education wing has begun - all getting us closer to our goal of being a net zero congregation, living into our commitments to care for our earth and each other.
  • Staff are in the building with more frequency, setting up their cubicles and offices, delighting in the simple pleasures of being together (masked) in-person, the water bottle fillers, plentiful restrooms, and a kitchenette on the first floor.

This week we welcomed Dr. Glen Thomas Rideout as our new Director of Worship Arts, and we are so glad that he is here. We’ve only just begun our work together, and the depth of his spirit, leadership, and gifts are already shining in our team. Please be sure to join us in person for worship at the Lake Harriet Bandshell on August 15 at 10 a.m. to meet Dr. Rideout, or join us online in our services to experience all that he is bringing to our community.

Lauren Wyeth, our Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries, returned from sabbatical this week, and we are so glad to have her back with us. Lauren’s time away was a gift to her and to us, as she brings her renewed energy and commitment to our community. Welcome back, Lauren!

Next week, we look forward to welcoming our new Building and Office Manager to the staff team, and we’ll share more about this role and the incredibly talented person we are bringing on board, in the days ahead. We’ll also be holding several days of staff team building, covenanting, and goal setting next week - so please know we are here, and it may take us a little longer to respond to non-urgent matters next week.

So much is happening, so much is changing, so much joyful anticipation is building.

Looking forward to being together online and in person soon.

Love,

Rev. Jen

Sunday Service Recordings
August 1: "Harnessing (and Being Harnessed by) Change"
with Julica Hermann de la Fuente

Sermon summary written by Liz Farmer:

They say the only constant in life is change. In different arenas and at different times of our lives, we feel constantly thrust back to Square One. In Martha Beck’s model of the change cycle, a catalytic event that spurs change - like moving, new CDC recommendations, or shedding an old or embodying a new identity - doesn’t have to be a negative thing. When things in and around us change, we try to find our place in it, try to figure out what it means for us next. Doing so alone can be discouraging and lonely; doing so in community can be illuminating and life-giving. And that is what we endeavor to do in this congregation. Meaning making is theology. How we make sense of what is going on, why it is happening, and how we make choices connected to our values is faith formation and development.

Resources & Information
We Care Ministries at First Universalist Church
The care team at First Universalist is here to help in a whole lot of ways—from phone calls to say we’re thinking about you to a listening ear when you need someone to accompany you through whatever’s happening in your life. COVID-19 has changed some of the ways we provide care, but there is a lot we’re still doing. Here is one of the ways we’re here to provide support:

We Care Companions

Care companions are members of the congregation who’ve been oriented toward the art and practice listening with a caring and confidential ear, and a loving and kind heart. We call and check-in on folks in the congregation and are here to accompany you longer term if you’re living with a chronic illness or could use some ongoing support. To connect with a Care Companion (or to become one), contact [email protected]. To access any of our other caring resources, contact Rev. Arif Mamdani at [email protected]
Care Resources

Spiritual Care - Your ministers and program staff are here for one-on-one confidential conversations of support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of us to connect.

Love Kits - Are you or someone you love ill? Is your family struggling? Do you live alone or feel isolated? Do you know someone else from church who might be? If so, please let Rev. Karen ([email protected]) know so that a package full of love and support can be delivered to your home.

Meal Trains - If you or someone you know at church would welcome a meal to help them through a difficult time, loss, illness or injury — and having someone else do the cooking for a bit would help —please let us know. Contact Rev. Arif Mamdani at [email protected].

Minister’s Emergency Fund - For many of us, these are difficult financial times. If you need help with a car repair bill, making rent, a doctor’s bill, groceries, gas, a mortgage payment, affording your medication, a bus card, or any other financial situation - please be in touch. We have financial resources available. Please contact a minister/staff member.

Mental Health Connect - www.mhconnect.org - Need help finding a therapist? Want to learn more about particular mental health conditions and resources? Check out Mental Health Connect, a local organization supported by congregations like ours, that provides community-based resources, support and education to improve access to mental health services and connect individuals and families with the services they need.

Counseling - The Walk In Counseling Center offers free counseling by phone or computer. Find out how to “walk in” on their website.
