Join us this Sunday, August 2 at our 10am service where we will present the St. Michael's Scholarships for the 2026/27 school year to this year's recipient(s) in attendance.

Building Maintenance Work

As you will see our mold remediation work has progressed in the Parish Hall Kitchen and Sanctuary. Reconstruction began this week and will conclude in the next week or so. They are working hard to finish this as soon as possible. Questions, contact Mary Ellen Ferguson, Doug Davy, or Rick Larkey. 

Coffee Hour in July & August

Please note that while work is being done in the kitchen we will be having light refreshments for coffee hour in July through August with Coffee, Tea and Cookies only. As always please sign up on the coffee hour board available in Parish Hall on Sunday's and contact the office with questions.

Children's Space in the Narthex

During the summer while nursery is on hold we are testing out setting up a designated children's space in the narthex. This will be on the right side of the church behind the back pew with a collapsible table, chairs and small corner bookcase for activities and children's books. We will also have a nursery attendant available on some Sundays to help lead activities at the family table. Please contact the office if you have questions or if you would like to volunteer to join our nursery ministry.

Newcomer Welcome Program

Thank you to all who attended the program and lunch. It was wonderful meeting with our newer members and visitors. Thank you to the clergy and various ministry leaders who helped showcase the vibrant and active community that we have; and continue to build.

Celebrating Emmy’s Baptism!

Saturday, August 22 at 11am

We will be celebrating the Baptism of Emerald Elizabeth Gartin on Saturday August 22 at 11am here at St. Michael’s in a joint church service with St. Michael’s and Faith Episcopal Church congregations. This will be a full baptismal service with a eucharist and a potluck reception immediately following in Parish and Johnstone Hall. Thank you for all your donations to the Starr King Tk-8 Backpack Drive! You still have one more week to get in on the action. On Sunday August 9th we will bless the backpacks and school supplies. We invite all teachers and students at all levels, to bring in their bags as well. What better way to start the school year!

We Can Make a Big Difference for Starr King K-8

Our partner school, Starr King K-8, greatly appreciates the assistance we have given their students over many years. Other items that are needed are large containers of hand sanitizer, large boxes of Kleenex, glue sticks, black thin dry erase markers and thick dry erase makers of all colors. If you prefer to make a cash donation, please make your check out to St. Michaels and indicate on the memo line for Starr King. We will then shop the sales for additional school supplies which they request.

It is simple. Drop these items off at church on Sunday or in the church office during the week. Remember, a little done by a lot of us can make a huge difference to many young lives at Starr King K-8. We will bless them on August 9th and drop them off on August 10th. Many thanks!

Volunteer at Starr King

Like all of our local public schools, Starr King must cut cost for this coming school year, resulting in many cuts to school aid positions next year. This will increase the need for volunteers at Starr King. This year St Michael’s will help coordinate and place volunteers from our church. They need help in all grades K-8 and are happy to train volunteers, you can set the time and frequency that work best for you, what grade you want to work with, and subjects you would most enjoy helping students master. I found working with the students very gratifying. Please contact Cindy Dewey or the church office if you have further questions. 

Parishioner Guided Grants 2026

CARING FOR ONE ANOTHER AND OUR COMMUNITY

For many years, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church has contributed to organizations in the greater Sacramento Community and beyond. Beginning in 2013 all our church fundraising proceeds have been donated to the non-profit community. 

You are invited to nominate a non-profit organization to receive a grant in 2026. This year grant amounts are expected to range from $50-$2000. Grant applications are available online and paper copies are also available on the Sunday usher’s desk. All applications are due in office by October 16, 2026. St. Michael's Vitalant Blood Drive

Our Blood Drive is this Sunday. The Bloodmobile will be parked in the front parking lot between 11 am and 2pm.You still have time to register to donate. As an added incentive, The Sacramento River Cats will provide TWO FREE GAME TICKETS for any remaining home game to anyone who donates during the drive.

In response to the various issues facing our country and community, the Mercy and Social Justice Committee has been seeking ways to become more involved and support actions of groups seeking justice, fairness, and compassion for the people involved. All policy positions are based on General Convention and Executive Council resolutions.

The Rt. Rev. Jerry Lamb

September 4, 1940 - July 25, 2026

It is with sadness, but with the hope of the resurrection, that we share that The Rt. Rev. Jerry Alban Lamb, former bishop of the Diocese of Northern California, died Saturday evening at his residence in Southern California.

Bishop Lamb served the Diocese as bishop for fourteen years, from 1992 - 2006.

Services will be held at Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. Dates are pending.

We offer prayers of gratitude for his long life of faithful service.

Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

Debussy--Canope from Preludes, Book II



Here is a Prelude by the "father" of Impressionism, Claude Debussy (1862-1918), whose birthday falls on August 22. Although the term "Impressionism" was applied to music for the first time in conjunction with Debussy's works, he never really liked the term to describe his music. He wanted his music to create a "mood, feeling, atmosphere" rather than creating an "impression" of a particular event or picture. In any case, this prelude does indeed create a mood of Antiquity, evoking the atmosphere of ancient Egypt (a Canope is a container, with the top in the form of an animal head of the gods, for holding the remains of a mummy). The tempo marking is "Très calme et doucement triste" ("Very calm and sweetly sad"), which is how it makes me feel whenever I play or hear it.

Prayers for Pregnant Women & Their Babies

We have an ongoing relationship with the Episcopal Sisters at the Order of Julian of Norwich monastery who pray daily for pregnant women and their babies. If you have name(s) of loved one(s) who are expecting that you would like to have included in the sisters' prayers, please email Fr. Rod.

Giving Thanks with Flowers!

You can remember your loved ones and celebrate important moments in your life with the gift of flowers to the church.  If you would like to give in this way, please let the office know and what you would like to give thanks for in the bulletin. You can send a check (or drop it off) to the office or pay on-line.  

Mercy and Social Justice Committee

The Mercy and Social Justice Committee exists to provide St. Michael’s parishioners with opportunities to share God’s love and justice.  We accomplish this by offering parishioners several ways to participate in outreach to our most vulnerable and marginalized neighbors. The Committee: Meets 7 – 8pm on the following evenings May 4th, June 1st, August 3rd, September 8th, and 

November 2nd. See Terry Bridges if you are interested in attending as a guest.

Name tags are available at Sunday morning check in's on the greeter cart. Please be sure to grab and wear your name tag before the service. If you are in need of a name tag please let the office know.
