Fr. Mike's Induction to the Episcopal Church’s

Order of Julian of Norwich

At the September 13, Sunday morning 10 a.m. service, Father Mike will be inducted into the Episcopal Church’s Order of Julian of Norwich; a monastic order of nuns and affiliates who have made vows and promises to live lives consistent with a Benedictine rule of life. Everyone is invited to witness this moving event for Father Mike who is being received as an affiliate. The Order is one of 18 monastic orders in the Episcopal Church. It is a contemplative order whose central purpose is intercessory prayer and conversion of life—that is, an ongoing turning toward God and transformation in Christ. Its spirituality is anchored to the writings of the fourteenth-century English anchoress, mystic, and theologian Julian of Norwich; especially her confidence in God’s nurturing love and her famous theological conviction that, ultimately, “all shall be well.” Julian lived in a world where religious authority overwhelmingly belonged to men. Yet sometime around 1395 c.e., she quietly produced what is generally considered the first surviving book written in English by a woman. And inside it was an extraordinary idea: God could be understood as a mother. While the Order’s nuns live in community at their monastery in Wisconsin; affiliates live in the wider world but adopt a rule of life adapted to their circumstances. They join the monastery’s ministry of prayer while remaining in their ordinary vocation.

Mercy & Social Justice Recommendation

Sacramento ACT

Last week we introduced Sacramento ACT (Area Churches Together) a multi-faith organization with over 56 congregations, schools and neighborhood groups, representing 60,000 families in Sacramento County.

Sacramento ACT has eight committees, two of which are Civic Engagement and Immigration.

The Civic Engagement committee is involved in voter registration, hosting candidate forums, and being apart of the PICO network of eleven other communities in the state (see a video on PICO at https://www.sacact.org/faithleaders).

The Immigration Committee: In a time when immigrants are especially threatened, ACT is working to provide support. We created a 24-hour Rapid Response Hotline to provide support to those who are targeted by ICE and to provide resource referrals. We have created a network of trained Legal Observers, and a network of sanctuary churches. We provide Know Your Rights trainings, accompaniment, and information to immigrants in our rapidly changing landscape. We connect undocumented immigrants to legal support for detention, deportation and asylum proceeding, and accompany families through the process. We advocate for increased access to health care and mental health care for undocumented immigrants through the Healthy Partners program in Sacramento County.  We also worked to end the County Sheriff department’s contract with ICE to house undocumented detainees.

ACT works on Immigration issues in both Sacramento and Yolo counties. We work in partnership with our state and national organizations on immigration reform, and advocating against family separation, mass deportation, and the Muslim Ban.

Want to learn more about these committees go to https://www.sacact.org/immloc

Sacramento ACT will host its monthly Multi-Faith Prayer Vigil on Wednesday September 16 from noon to 1:00 pm outside the Federal Building at 650 Capitol Mall. Please contact Terry Bridges with questions.

Choral Masterworks

by Dr. John Cozza, Music Director

Locus iste by Bruckner

This is the anthem the choir will sing at Communion this coming Sunday. Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) is best known for his monumental 9 symphonies, which last from 60-90 minutes. He was also a master of the vocal motet, as exemplified by this, his most famous small-scale choral work.

Here is a haunting recording by the a capella vocal group Voces8:
