Guest Preacher this Sunday
Welcome Bishop Allen!
We are excited to be welcoming The Right Reverend Lloyd Emmanuel Allen, Bishop of Honduras, to our congregation this Sunday, November 9 during our regular 10am service as a guest preacher. Bishop Allen is the first indigenous bishop to the Diocese of Honduras. He has a sincere heart for his fellow countrymen and is committed to ensuring that the churches become self-sustaining. He sees this as a way to directly impact each family in each parish of the Diocese of Honduras and undergird the spiritual renewal, deepen Christian faith and develop Christianity. The Episcopal Diocese of Honduras is a rapidly growing Diocese of the Episcopal Church with approximately 80,000 communicants in 156 parishes, missions and preaching stations.
Please join us in giving Bishop Allen a warm St. Michael's welcome this Sunday at our 10am service and Coffee Hour!

Spiritual Formation
Spiritual Formation is the lifelong process of spiritual growth and development that deepens our relationship with God. As we learn, practice, and live out our Christian faith, we tune into the movements and the voice of God in our lives, conform to the image of Jesus (become more like Him, loving as He loves), and are shaped into the persons God created us to be. The Episcopal church places high value on pursuing spiritual formation in community, informed by Scripture, Tradition, and Reason.

Choral Masterworks by John Cozza
Ein deutches Requiem, Op. 45 by Brahms
A work particularly appropriate for this past weekend (from which the choir sang the 4th movement this past Sunday) also happens to be one of the greatest of all choral masterworks--A German Requiem, to Words of the Holy Scriptures, Op. 45 (German: Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift) by Johannes Brahms, a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, a soprano and a baritone soloist, composed between 1865 and 1868. It comprises seven movements, which together last 65 to 80 minutes, making this work Brahms's longest composition. A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike a long tradition of the Latin Requiem, A German Requiem, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language.
Brahms's mother died in February 1865, a loss that caused him much grief and may well have inspired Ein deutsches Requiem. Brahms's lingering feelings over Robert Schumann's death in July 1856 may also have been a motivation, though his reticence about such matters makes this uncertain. Brahms set out to compose a work that would comfort the living, without the fire and brimstone of such Latin Requiem texts as the Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath"). This he does so admirably, especially in the lone movement for solo soprano, Ihr habt nur Traurigkeit ("You have only sadness"), in which the soprano (=Brahms' mother?) sings the words from John 16:22: And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

And here is a link to a wonderfully profound, spiritual performance by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan, recorded live at the 1978 Salzburg Easter Festival

I hope this work moves you as much as it does me.
