The Fourth Sunday in Lent
The Rev. Mary Claugus Preaching - Sunday, March 27, 2022
Let us all Welcome
Pastor Katie Holeman
Pastor Katie will join our staff on April 19th. Her primary areas of interest will be Church Growth in Family Ministries and her title will be Assistant Priest. She comes from the Lutheran tradition and so we will have the opportunity to get to know the way our Lutheran brothers and sisters do things. We are in full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Bishop Megan, the vestry, and I are excited to welcome Katie into our St. Michael's community and the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California.

Pastor Katie's first Sunday will be April 24th and we will be having a Welcome Reception for her immediately following the service. If you would like to help, please connect with the office. Gail McMichael has graciously agreed to spearhead this wonderful event! Please mark your calendars!
What St. Michael's is About
COVID Guidance Update
Re-Gathering Task Force

Assumptions we agreed upon:

  1. People who have not been fully vaccinated would be required to wear masks.
  2. People are empowered to make their own choices on how they want participate.
  3. We will continue to try to protect the most vulnerable.
  4. We will remain flexible and if the numbers change in any direction, we will address the situation accordingly.

We agreed that:
  • It is time for “voluntary mask wearing” for those who have been fully vaccinated.
  • We will keep an area in the sanctuary marked off as a “protected area” for those who want or need to mask and social distance. If you are fully vaccinated and want to keep wearing masks but are not concerned with social distancing, sit where you would like. Please refrain from sitting in the area marked as a protected area unless you are masked and are willing to social distance. If this is where you normally sit, we ask for a bit more patience.
  • Please look for seating directions by our increased signage. The Greeters and Ushers will have a schematic to show where the protected area will be. It will also be in the bulletin and in the Sunday Constant Contact.
  • The choir will begin singing without masks this Sunday, April 3.
  • The choir procession will begin again on Palm Sunday.
  • We will be offering Coffee Hour after the 10am Sunday Services once again.
  • We are looking for members to rejoin this ministry. Please contact the office if you are interested in getting involved.
  • All groups meeting can now meet on campus – in our classrooms, in the courtyard, etc. Even though you can meet in person, this does not mean that you must. This is up to the will of the group gathering. Some groups may choose to require masking. We ask that you inform the office and make sure that this is well communicated beforehand to those attending.
  • April 24th – we will be open for “bigger events” keeping in mind items 1-4 above.

Gethsemane Watch Sign-Ups!

In our preparation for Holy Week we are taking sign ups for our St. Michael's Gethsemane Watch.

We are again gathering on Facebook for our Gethsemane Watch. We are hoping that many of you will commit to spending time in the Garden, Thursday, April 14th. The watch begins at 8pm and goes on through 7am, April 15th. To participate, go to our Facebook profile page (St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Carmichael) where we will have a new post announcing our Gethsemane Watch and tag each other through the comments sections of that post - when we come and when we go! Please consider "sitting in the garden" to watch and pray with Jesus in one hour shifts.

You can sign up for one hour shifts by emailing the office with your interest and time preference and we will have sign ups available in the narthex.
Daughters of the King Study
Intro Informational Meeting - Tuesday April 26th at 1pm

The Order of the Daughters of the King is an order for women and girls who are communicants of the Episcopal, Anglican, Lutheran and Roman Catholic Churches.

Because Daughters of the King accept a Rule of Life, we define ourselves as an order, not an organization. Our community is found primarily in our local chapters, but it includes chapters throughout the United States as well as internationally.

On April 26th at 1pm, our Daughters of St. Michael’s Chapter will host an introductory informational meeting (on Zoom) for all women interested in learning more about our Order and participating in a monthly study on the last Tuesday of every month at 1pm on Zoom

If you would like more information or have questions about it, please contact:

Mary Hutchinson at (916) 284-1644 or Mary Mussell at (916) 204-2163.
Education for Ministry

Have you heard people talking about EfM and wondered what it is?
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of theological education of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Students sign up one year at a time for this four year program.

The study is done in a seminar class which meets once a week throughout the academic year, about 36 weeks, under the guidance of trained mentors.

This is a small “community” of learners studying together. Although the course materials provide substantial academic content, the focus is on life as ministry and understanding what that ministry may be. The first two years focus on the Old and New Testament, the third year on church history and the fourth year on ethics and philosophy.

EfM teaches you how to think theologically, deepens your faith, and your understanding of our Christian heritage. The bonds you will form in this small learning community will be deep and long lasting. The program is non-denominational and St. Michael’s class is open to members of other Christian communities. If you would like more information, please contact Janice Bowdler, janbowdler@comcast.net, or Ellen Cehand, harbawe1961@gmail.com. Financial assistance is available.

Easter Meal Gift Cards
Together We Can Help Others

Easter brings pleasant thoughts of a family gathering, including a special meal. We at St. Michael’s cherish such memories. They’re revered. But what of those who, for whatever circumstance, lack the means to do something extra for an Easter dinner? Over the years, we’ve collected funds to purchase gift cards to help these people. At River City Food Bank and the St. Mathew’s Center these deserving people can be identified and helped - with your contributions.

It’s easy to help out. You can donate cash or a check in a church envelope by marking it “Easter meals” or “gift card funds ” and the church will do the rest. We’ll all feel we’ve done something worthy to spread the good cheer that comes with Easter.

Wiederstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54 by Bach

Particularly appropriate for the Lenten Season is Widerstehe doch der Sünde (Just resist sin),[1] BWV 54,[a] is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed the solo cantata for alto in Weimar between 1711 and 1714, and probably performed it on the seventh Sunday after Trinity, 15 July 1714. It is Bach's first extant church cantata for a solo voice, and also his one surviving Lenten cantata from his Weimar days (in Bach's time Lent was a tempus clasum in Leipzig in which no instrumental music was performed in church).

The text of the short work was written by Georg Christian Lehms, for two arias and a connecting recitative. The topic is to resist sin, based on the Epistle of James. The text was published in a 1711 collection, dedicated to the Sunday Oculi (the 3rd Sunday in Lent). It is not known when Bach composed the work but is assumed that he performed it as part of his monthly cantata productions in 1714 on the seventh Sunday after Trinity, 15 July. The solo voice is accompanied by strings: two violin parts, two viola parts and continuo. The composition begins with a striking dissonant chord. In the words of English conductor and Early Music Performance Practice expert John Eliot Gardiner: "The first aria is spellbinding... (the opening dissonance) is a deliberate shock tactic to rouse his listeners to the need to 'stand firm against all sinning, or its poison will possess you."
