Last Stop! Hear the Whistle Blowing?

We are coming to the end of the first step in shaping our future together and in calling our new Rector. On Friday, September 6 at midnight, the window of opportunity to join us on this journey will close. You are probably one of many who have already shared their experiences and perspectives. If you have not, this is your last chance. Although our response rate has been great, if we don’t have your input, we are still missing an important piece of the puzzle. Please - share your opinions with us using this highly confidential assessment instrument.

If you need a paper copy, please stop by the office, and we will provide one for you along with a self-addressed stamped return envelope.

If you have questions, please contact Doug Davy at douglasmdavy@gmail.com or call Doug at 916-798-8232.

A very special thanks to everyone who has participated in this process,

Rick Larkey, Senior Warden

Tammy Murray, Junior Warden

Doug Davy, Profile Team Chair

Suzanne Phinney, Search Team Chair

Join St. Michael’s Rector Search Committee!

One of the next steps of finding a new rector is selecting a search committee of 7 – 10 parishioners who are representative of a cross section of the congregation, skilled in interviewing and possessing the insight needed to select someone who can be successful at St. Michael’s. The Search Committee begins its work as the Parish Profile Committee finalizes the Profile. This suggests that for St. Michael’s, the Committee will be finalized late fall 2024. The process of reviewing applications may take one to three months. The Committee will have a chaplain who begins and ends every meeting in prayer.

If you are interested in joining the Search Committee, please email Suzanne Phinney or call the office at 916-488-3550 for an application. For more information please check out the document attached here.

ST. MICHAEL’S PLEDGE CAMPAIGN 2025

SEPTEMBER COMMENCEMENT

Greetings to the reliable and continuously generous givers of personal treasure to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Carmichael! The 2024 calendar year 2025 Pledge Campaign officially started this week just after Labor Day. Our congregation has an admirable history of sustained giving that supports and feeds its engaged vibrant mission and its vigorous track record of sustained outreach, pastoral care, liturgical services and religious education. Year in and year out we selflessly give even more of ourselves in “Gratitude for God’s Grace-Bridging the Future with Continuing Generosity. And that is the theme of this year’s campaign, a pledge drive that is especially critical this year as we are in an interim period “bridging our future” between rectors. This year, the drive starts and ends in September. Although short in length, this drive will impact with a long reaching punch.

Please look forward to testimonials from both 10 am service regular Mary Kessler and long-time parishioner Warner Seargeant, who will assure us that St. Michael’s has always and will again emerge stronger from interim periods between rectors. Besides this article in the Messenger, Senior Warden Rick Larkey, Pastor Katie Holeman and Greeter/Usher Molly Hoever will also publish articles. Look forward to soon receiving in the mail your 2025 Pledge Card along with the original art of 16 year old Addison Holeman, a simple “bridging our future” themed illustration of the “Prayer for the Rector’s Search” prayer card. Plus Huey Tidwell has agreed to address the 5 pm Contemplative Prayer Service this month.

The guest preacher this year giving the sermon on In Gathering Sunday, September 29th, will be the Rev. Dr. Portia Hopkins, the Lutheran/ Episcopal Chaplain at the University of California Davis. Also on September 29th (that is the feast of our church’s namesake Saint Michael the Archangel), we will all be served after the service a tasty complimentary catered meal that will precede an in-person group participation survey review led by Jennifer Franz in Johnstone Hall.

Last year a record sum of $549,529 was pledged. Let’s once again continue to keep our thriving and engaged community of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church Carmichael flourishing and in the green by generously sharing our treasure with our church to the glory of God.

Choral Masterworks

by John Cozza, Music Director

Mass #3 in f minor by Anton Bruckner

As the composer's birthday falls on September 4, it seems fitting that this week's Choral Masterpiece is Bruckner's crowning choral achievement. The Mass No. 3 in F minorWAB 28, is a setting of the mass ordinary for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, and organ ad libitum, that Anton Bruckner composed in 1867–1868.

After the 1867 success of his Mass No. 1 in D minor, Bruckner was commissioned "to write a new Mass for the Burgkapelle". Bruckner wrote the first version between September 1867–1868 in Linz (just before his move to Vienna)
