Happy Veteran's Day

The office will be closed Monday, November 11 in observance of Veteran's Day! We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend!

Dear Beloved Members of Our Diocese,

Now that the election results are in, I know there are many different feelings across our Diocese. As we look into the future together, we remain who we have always been: people of faith; people who choose to follow the God of Love; and, always, people of prayer.

Today is the feast day of William Temple. This is fitting, as much of his work was focused on healing of the social fabric and, following WWI, led the establishment of the Conference on Christian Politics, Economics, and Citizenship an always sought "the things which pertain to the Kingdom of God."

To that end, I invite you to join me at 5:30 pm today for an online service of Evening Prayer -- a service that has echoed through our tradition for hundred of years, and carried generation upon generation through untold journeys of faithfulness and grace.

I hope you will join me.

In Christ’s love,

Advent Studies

Journeying the Way of Love

Please join us for the four Sundays of Advent after worship where we will be diving into Michael Curry’s Advent study Journeying the Way of Love. All are invited to participate. We will be in the Friendship Center as well as on Zoom with a hybrid study. This is a great way to center yourself and remember that during this time of the year when we can get lost in the hustle and bustle, God calls us to slow down, wait, and listen. Please contact Rev. Andy or Fr. Rod for more information.

Living Compass - Living Well Through Advent

We live in tumultuous, challenging times. Our country is torn by widely divergent experiences and perspectives and our world is full of conflict. How do we pursue peace in our lives and make a difference in the world in which we live? Engage in the Living Compass program for Advent focused on peace.

A weekly discussion group facilitated by Lisa and Jim Sargent will be offered on Sunday evenings from 6:30-7:30 from December 1 - 22. It will be on Zoom. Please contact Lisa by e-mail at lisa@2sargents.com to sign up.

The Living Compass Advent booklets will be available free of cost at the church later this month.

There are multiple other ways to receive the booklet readings through Living Compass at https://www.livingcompass.org/advent

St. Michael's Serves in the Community

Gifts from the Heart

Gifts from the Heart (GFTH) is back again for its 32nd year at St. Michael’s!

The gift tags will be available starting this

Sunday from 9:30 - 10 and 11:15 - 12.

We have 70 children, and 50 seniors and dependent adults. Please stop by to select your gift tag/s.

The program that provides Christmas gifts for children, seniors, and disabled adults began 36 years ago via the inspiration of a single CPS Social Worker. In 2024, multiple county agencies and community partners will bless over 3,000 people in Sacramento County with wonderful gifts. Each client’s social worker spends the time to learn what their clients need and desire and then shares that information with GFTH staff. Community partners like St. Michael’s do the rest until gifts are ready for pick up and delivery! This is such a fun and meaningful way to help our neighbors in need! They will experience a more joyful Christmas season because of our generosity.

Questions? Please direct any GFTH questions to Laura Quene or Holly Yue.

Free Calendars to Donate?

Do you have an excess of free 2025 calendars that are sent with promotional mailings? If you are looking for ways to donate these we are collecting them in the office to include in the GFTH gifts as well as have them available for Winter Shelter attendees.

Thanksgiving Gift Cards!

Help make Thanksgiving a little brighter! It is time for our annual Thanksgiving Gift Card collection for food gift cards to help those in need have a special Thanksgiving meal. If you are giving by check, please write “Food Gift Card" in the memo. You can also give online or put cash in an envelope (you can find these in the pew pockets), mark it with "Food Gift Card" and put it in the plate on Sunday. Please have your donations to the church or office by Sunday November 17th.

Your donations will buy Safeway and Target gift cards that will be distributed at River City Food Bank and The Center at St. Matthew’s. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for us to share our bounty by helping the less fortunate among us have a memorable meal. For more information please contact Terry Bridges at terrycbridges@gmail.com or the Office

Choral Masterwork

by John Cozza, Music Director

Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams

In honor of Veterans' Day this coming Monday here is the Dona nobis pacem (English: Grant us peace), a cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra written by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1936 and first performed on 2 October of that year. The work was commissioned to mark the centenary of the Huddersfield Choral Society. Vaughan Williams produced his plea for peace by referring to recent wars during the growing fears of a new one. His texts were taken from the Mass, three poems by Walt Whitman, a political speech, and sections of the Bible.

The work is scored for chorus and large orchestra, with soprano and baritone soloists. The phrase Dona nobis pacem ("Give us peace"), in different settings, punctuates the entire piece.
