What St. Michael's is About
Celebrating Graduates July 3rd!

This Sunday, July 3rd, we will be celebrating all High School, College and upper level Graduates! If you or someone you know graduated this year, we want to celebrate them! Please contact Pastor Katie or Michelle in the office with their name and graduation class. We will honor them at the July 3rd 10am Worship Service with a prayer and blessing as they embark on the next stage of their journey.

Currently we have two graduates we will be celebrating, Mary Katherine (She will be in person) as well as Taylor Donoghue (She will not be in person).

Mary Katherine Decker graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School on June 14. Mary Katherine’s parents are Sarah Foley and Dave Decker. You may recall Mary Katherine as the 2004 St. Michael’s Christmas Pageant Baby Jesus, or from her days watching kids in the Sunday nursery. Mary Katherine will be attending Sacramento City College in the fall. Her future plans include transferring to a university “close to the beach.” She is interested in studying anthropology and likes spending time with her friends. You can find her this summer slinging ice cream at the Baskin Robbins on Folsom Boulevard in East Sacramento.

Taylor Donoghue graduated from Oregon State University with her Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. For now, she plans to work, travel, and enjoy what life has in store for the time being while she considers possibly pursuing a Graduate program in the future.
In Case you have not heard ....

Fall Classes for Adults
We have been busy planning for fall classes. They are all designed to deepen your spiritual connection with God while working with other members to grow friendships in the congregation.

Welcome to St. Michael's
Beginning Sunday September 11, 2022

We will be meeting on Sunday’s from 11:45am - 1:15pm in the Friendship center. This class is for newcomers, visitors who want to know more about St. Michael’s, and new members.

St. Michael's Step Work
Beginning Wednesday September 21, 2022

We will be meeting from 7pm - 8pm on Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. There are many 12 step programs that work to help people recover from addictions of many kinds: Alcohol, drugs, etc. The foundation of this step work is a relationship with a high power, honesty, humility, and an openness to seeing old things in a new way. This class will help you explore the principles of the 12 steps as a way to deepen your relationship with God and in doing so, the promise is that you will find peace, love, and joy in your life. The work is simple in theory but difficult in practice. Be warned, this is a class that will change you if you let it.

Growing More Deeply
Beginning Sunday October 9, 2022

Growing More Deeply: Learning, Experiencing, and Reflecting will be the focus of this class beginning October 9th 11:45am to 1:15pm. It will run for 6 weeks, October 9, 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13. We will use practical experience to grow spiritually through reflection.
STARR KING Backpacks???

Normally this time of year many parishioners begin keeping an eye out for sales on backpacks and school supplies. We have just learned that the school has received a one-time FACE grant from the San Juan Unified School District that will provide every student at Starr King a backpack and school supplies for the 2022-23 school year. Starr King would greatly welcome our support again for the 2023-24 school year!

Please stay tuned for other opportunities to support the students and staff of Starr King in the 2022-23 school year...
God's Helping Hands Laundry Days

Mark your calendars for August 20, 2022, 8:45-11:30am. We need volunteers for God's Helping Hands Laundry Days at Launderland, 3100 Fulton Ave. (North of Marconi Ave.) from 9-11AM (last loads in by 11AM).

This is an opportunity to help our neighbors who do not have access or means to launder their clothing and other essentials.  Volunteers assist by handling the money (quarters to run the machines, laundry detergent, etc.) and providing a positive community environment of support for our neighbors to meet their basic needs.

St. Michael's future dates: 8/20/22, 10/15/22, and 12/17/22.

Choral Masterworks
by John Cozza

Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland
In honor of the 4th of July: Copland's Lincoln Portrait is not exactly a "choral" masterpiece, but Lincoln's words are always inspiring and seem especially appropriate at this time of year. Conductor Andre Kostelanetz commissioned Copland to write a musical portrait of an "eminent American" for the New York Philharmonic. Copland chose President Abraham Lincoln, and used material from speeches and letters of Lincoln, as well as original folk songs of the period, including "Camptown Races" and "On Springfield Mountain". Copland finished Lincoln Portrait in April 1942.

And here is a wonderful live performance from London from 1976 with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with one of the great American singers of the 20th Century, bass-baritone William Warfield, narrating:
