A Letter from The Episcopal Bishops of California

Beloved in Christ,

Like all Californians, we are watching with great concern the events unfolding around immigration protests in Los Angeles. We are deeply concerned about the ICE raids and about the potential for violence arising from the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to the Los Angeles area. We are concerned that military deployments will escalate the confrontations unnecessarily, and worry that all of our regions in California may be subject to future deployments that heighten tensions rather than resolving them....continue reading using link below.

Rector Search Update

The Search Committee has finished its interviewing of candidates and checking references. We are very excited to send candidates to the Vestry for the next step of the process. It has taken hard and excellent work to get us to this point. We look forward to the Decommissioning of the Committee this Sunday June 8. Please join the Vestry and staff in expressing our gratitude to this wonderful team.

Vestry Update

Due to health issues Chris Chamness has stepped down from his position as Vestry Clerk and a member of the Vestry and Doug Davy has graciously agreed to fill in for the remainder of his 2025 term as well as to fulfill the role of Clerk for the time being. We thank Chris for his faithful service to our Vestry the last 2 years and pray for strength and healing during this time.

Education for Ministry has added a new program

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of theological study provided by the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

The study is done in a seminar class which meets once a week throughout the academic year, about 36 weeks, under the guidance of trained mentors. This is a small “community” of learners studying together.

Beginning this year there are two options for study:

EfM Classic

The 50-year-old program of four years, one year at a time, is rebranded as “EfM: Classic.” It is only offered, as it has always been, by accredited mentors. The four years are:

  • Year 1: Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament)
  • Year 2: Christian Scriptures (New Testament)
  • Year 3: Church History
  • Year 4: Christian Ethics and Spirituality

EfM: Wide Angle

This new class is a 1 year offering for those who wish to have a “taste of all four years in one year.” Wide Angle can be offered as a stand-alone group or participants in Wide Angle can join a group of EfM: Classic. EfM Wide Angle can only be offered by accredited mentors. Depending on numbers, we anticipate this will be offered at St. Michael’s in coordination with the EfM Classic seminar.

We are now recruiting for the 2025-2026 academic year. If you would like more information, please contact Janice Bowdler, janbowdler@comcast.net, or Ellen Cehand, harbawe1961@gmail.com.

Choral Masterworks

by John Cozza, Music Director

Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjielo

The Offertory Anthem that the choir sang for Pentecost last week, "The Ground" by Norwegian composer Ola Gjielo, is taken from his Sunrise Mass. Gjeilo was born on May 5, 1978, to Inge and Anne-May Gjeilo, and grew up in Skui, Norway. He began playing piano and composing when he was five years old and learned to read music when he was seven years old. Gjeilo studied classical composition with Wolfgang Plagge. In his undergraduate career, Gjeilo studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music (1999–2001), transferred to the Juilliard School (2001), and studied at the Royal College of Music, London (2002–2004) to receive a bachelor's degree in composition. He continued his education at Juilliard (2004–06) where he received his master's degree in 2006, also in composition. From 2009–10, Gjeilo was composer-in-residence for Phoenix Chorale.

He currently resides in Manhattan, working as a freelance composer.

Here is a beautiful live studio recording with the composer playing the piano part:
