You Listened! And Talked!

Thank you everyone who participated in the Parish Listening Events to share your ideas and inspirations for St. Michael’s in years to come as we call our new rector. The results are extremely important as we prepare the Parish Profile, a document that describes our parish as it is, and will be posted nationally to assist candidates to be our next rector in learning about us as they discern their call to this parish.

Sixty-two of us participated by writing down ideas on large sticky notes (or sending or telling them to Mary Kessler, scribe for the Zoom session). If you would like to read what others wrote and said, we have posted an unedited transcription of the sticky notes and Mary Kessler’s notes, from all three sessions. Fair warning - it is about 20 pages.

Your participation is much appreciated.

If you are able to donate candy please bring it to the office. Thank you all for your support of this fun event. As always costumes are encouraged but not required.

St. Michael's Green Team

Green Team Update

The Green Team is at work on our goal to be carbon neutral by 2030. After the work done this summer (did you notice the new lights in Johnstone Hall), we are working on our overall plan. We will be tracking our utility spending so that we can measure our carbon footprint. A report will be submitted to the Vestry and Diocese by the end of the year. Look for an update at the Annual Meeting.

What about our own goals to reduce our carbon footprint? Are you thinking of replacing gas appliances? How about getting an electric vehicle? SMUD has some very nice rebates available that can save you some money. The church took advantage of these with the replacement of our gas water heater and installation of six new heat pumps in the sanctuary.

Thanksgiving Gift Cards!

Help make Thanksgiving a little brighter! It is time for our annual Thanksgiving Gift Card collection for food gift cards to help those in need have a special Thanksgiving meal. If you are giving by check, please write “Food Gift Card" in the memo. You can also give online or put cash in an envelope (you can find these in the pew pockets), mark it with "Food Gift Card" and put it in the plate on Sunday. Please have your donations to the church or office by Sunday November 17th.

Your donations will buy Safeway and Target gift cards that will be distributed at River City Food Bank and The Center at St. Matthew’s. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for us to share our bounty by helping the less fortunate among us have a memorable meal. Choral Masterwork

by John Cozza, Music Director

Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 by Faure

This week's choral masterwork is the anthem the choir sang last Sunday. Cantique de Jean Racine (Hymn/Canticle by Jean Racine), Op. 11, is a composition for mixed choir and piano or organ by Gabriel Fauré. The text, "Verbe égal au Très-Haut" ("Word, one with the Highest"), is a French paraphrase by Jean Racine of a Latin hymn from the breviary for matinsConsors paterni luminis. The nineteen-year-old composer set the text in 1864–65 for a composition competition at the École Niedermeyer de Paris, and it won him the first prize. The work was first performed the following year on 4 August 1866 in a version with accompaniment of strings and organ.
