The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The Rev. Rodney Davis

Sunday September 22, 2024

Welcome to Rev. Andy Lobban,

St. Michaels’ New Interim Rector

St. Michael’s Vestry is pleased to announce that we have called an Interim Rector, The Rev. Andrew David (Andy) Lobban (pronounced “lo-bun”). Rev. Andy will join the congregation for worship on Sunday, November 3rd.

Rev. Lobban has served St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Livermore as Rector since 2016. Prior to that, he was the Minor Canon for Social Justice at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco for four years. Rev. Andy has held an Assisting Clergy role at an Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas and a Clergy Liaison/Chaplaincy role at Good Samaritan Community Services, an agency of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. He has been active in prison and homeless services ministries in the Bay Area and has served as President of the Southern Alameda Deanery of the Episcopal Diocese of California.

Rev. Andy has earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Education degree (emphasis in Science and Math) from University of California, Berkeley and Master of Divinity degree from the Seminary of the Southwest.

Rev. Lobban’s extracurricular interests include “outdoorsmanship” (snow skiing, backpacking, climbing, and road bicycling) and classical music performance (piano, violin, voice). Rev. Andy and his wife Olga have a daughter who is a first-year college student, a teen-aged daughter, and a three-year-old son. Please join the Vestry in extending our warmest welcome to Rev. Andy as he joins our Parish family.

Listen Up, Ye Dogs and Cats!!

We’ve been saying that St. Michael’s will be holding Listening Events on October 6th and 9th to share ideas about the future of our parish and the qualities we desire in our next Rector. We have reconsidered the date, since we will be celebrating St. Francis Day with our usual pet blessing, and scheduled these events to occur a week later. Although we value the opinions of all members of our Parish family, including the furry ones, we considered that translation might be a problem. The Listening Events are newly scheduled for:

Sunday, October 13 after the 10:00 service in Johnstone Hall

Sunday, October 13 at 7:00 pm on Zoom only

Wednesday, October 16 at 6:30 pm in Johnstone Hall

We will send an email out to everyone a week or so before hand so that you can RSVP to indicate which session you prefer.

Thank you very much,

Doug Davy

Bridging the Future with Continuing Generosity

Why Give?

From my perspective there are two questions that have to be considered when giving of your time, talent, and treasure; Why give and Why give to St. Michaels?

Why give?

It is an expression of your connection to God’s Word and a testament of your faith and commitment as a Christian.

Many Christian denominations hold Jesus taught that tithing must be done in conjunction with a deep concern for "justice, mercy and faithfulness" (cf. Matthew 23:23).

Abundant blessings imply weighty responsibilities; “for everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more” (Luke 12:48). The message is clear: our possessions are to be used not merely for our own enjoyment but for the benefit of the world around you. “Freely you have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

Why give to St. Michaels?

We have many people asking us to invest in their cause. There are many causes that deserve to be funded.

Your giving of your time, talent and treasure is a testament to how important the St. Michael’s community is to you in relation to all your other communities and causes in your life.

I know my involvement and commitment in giving my time and talent to St. Michaels, since 1980 has ebbed and flowed. What has not changed is my pledge to St. Michaels. For my giving to me is the foundation of my relationship to our St. Michael's community.

We ask you to join us in being St. Michael’s through your giving of your treasure, time, and talent.

Grace, Peace, and Love.

Ingathering Sunday & Lunch

Sunday, September 29th

As we enter worship this Sunday morning you might notice a few things.

First, our preacher for Sunday will be The Rev. Dr. Portia Hopkins from The Belfry in Davis. We are so pleased to have her joining us for our Feast of St. Michael & Ingathering Sunday Service!

Secondly, there will be a basket next to the Baptismal Font as you enter the Sanctuary. Please place your pledges in the basket and they will be processed up with the offering. If you do not have your card filled out, or, if you forgot it at home, do not worry! We will have extra pledge cards available at the greeters table and you can place it in the basket during the sharing of the peace.

Finally, please plan to join us for a delightful lunch and the results of the CAT survey that will be presented after worship. Thank you all for your continued generosity and support of the work of St Michael's.

Blessings,

The Mercy and Social Justice Ministry Committee’s mission is “to represent God’s love and compassion through acts of mercy and justice.” In 2024 the committee has continued to focus on providing financial support, in-kind donations, service, and forming partnerships in the greater community to love and aid neighbors and strangers in need. In keeping with our mission, St. Michael’s will again be supporting community outreach through the 2024 Mercy and Social Justice Parishioner Guided Grants.

Parishioner Guided Grants Program:

You are invited to nominate a program in which you, or someone you know at St. Michael’s, is actively involved. The grants will be awarded to programs that address basic needs of food, shelter, education and health. Choral Masterworks

by John Cozza, Music Director

Gloria by John Rutter

With the composer's birthday falling on September 24, I thought the most famous work of the most famous choral conductor/composer of our time would be most appropriate: the magnificent "Gloria" of John Rutter. Here is a link to a live recording from Carnegie Hall with the composer conducting:
