Fr. Mike's Induction to the Episcopal Church’s

Order of Julian of Norwich

At the September 13, Sunday morning 10 a.m. service, Father Mike will be inducted into the Episcopal Church’s Order of Julian of Norwich; a monastic order of nuns and affiliates who have made vows and promises to live lives consistent with a Benedictine rule of life. Everyone is invited to witness this moving event for Father Mike who is being received as an affiliate. The Order is one of 18 monastic orders in the Episcopal Church. It is a contemplative order whose central purpose is intercessory prayer and conversion of life—that is, an ongoing turning toward God and transformation in Christ. Its spirituality is anchored to the writings of the fourteenth-century English anchoress, mystic, and theologian Julian of Norwich; especially her confidence in God’s nurturing love and her famous theological conviction that, ultimately, “all shall be well.” Julian lived in a world where religious authority overwhelmingly belonged to men. Yet sometime around 1395 c.e., she quietly produced what is generally considered the first surviving book written in English by a woman. And inside it was an extraordinary idea: God could be understood as a mother. While the Order’s nuns live in community at their monastery in Wisconsin; affiliates live in the wider world but adopt a rule of life adapted to their circumstances. They join the monastery’s ministry of prayer while remaining in their ordinary vocation.

Mercy & Social Justice Recommendation

Sacramento ACT

We have spent the last few weeks promoting the activities of the National Episcopal Church’s Public Policy Advocacy and Worship efforts. Now we would like to offer a local group to become involved with, Sacramento ACT (Area Churches Together).

Founded in 1991 by 12 local pastors and community members, Sacramento ACT has been creating real, structural change in Sacramento. We have drawn on our shared faith values as we have worked to create a more just and equitable community for all. We have lifted up voices that are often silenced in our community: youth, communities of color, immigrants, homeless residents, new voters.

We have worked to improve education and safety in our community, to increase access to healthcare, to direct funding away from incarceration and towards eliminating homelessness and supporting human services, and to engage voters to vote their values.

Sacramento ACT works to create a more just world by teaching people of faith how to build and exercise their own power to address the root causes of the problems they face. In ACT, this struggle for justice is rooted in our shared faith vision. We use listening, research and advocacy to identify and change conditions to create justice and equity.

In future articles you will learn more about Sacramento ACT and how we can get involved. But if you can’t wait and want to jump ahead go to https://www.sacact.org/ to learn more.”

Ode for Queen Mary's Birthday by Purcell

Come Ye Sons of Art, Z.323, also known as Ode for Queen Mary's Birthday, is a musical composition by Henry Purcell, whose birthday falls on September 10. It was written in 1694, and is one of a series of odes in honour of the birthday of Queen Mary II of England. The text of the ode is often attributed to Nahum Tate, who was poet laureate at the time. As a court composer, Purcell was given the task of composing odes for the birthday of Queen Mary. Come, Ye Sons of Art, written for performance in April 1694, was the sixth and final ode: Queen Mary died at the end of that year.
