Our Acolyte Ministry

Training on Sunday, November 2

The ministry of our Acolytes is servanthood to the clergy and congregation. Acolytes serve at both Eucharistic and Memorial Services, or whenever there is a special service. The commitment is to begin at twenty minutes before our worship and after the Service to extinguish the lighted candles. This is an especially important ministry that helps set the tone of our worship. Sr. Tina Francesca and Rev. Megan will provide training on Sunday November 2 directly after the service. All who are ages 9 and older who might be interested in our ministry. Please pray and think if God is calling you!

God’s Peace, Sr. Tina Francesca.

Choral Masterworks by John Cozza

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80 by Bach

This coming Friday, October 31, is not only Halloween but also the Feast of the Reformation, celebrating the day in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the city of Wittenberg's castle church. Many important choral works have been composed over the centuries to celebrate this day, but perhaps the most famous is one of Bach's most impressive church cantatas. Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott ("A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"), BWV 80 is a chorale cantata for Reformation Day by Johann Sebastian Bach. He reworked it from one of his Weimar cantatasAlles, was von Gott geboren, BWV 80a. The first Leipzig version of the church cantata, BWV 80b, may have been composed as early as 1723, some five months after Bach had moved to Leipzig. Some years later he reworked the cantata one more time, writing an extended chorale fantasia as its opening movement. The text of the BWV 80a version was written by Salomon Franck and contained one stanza of Martin Luther's hymn "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott"; for his chorale cantata versions, BWV 80b and 80, Bach added the complete text of this Lutheran hymn. Bach scored the cantata for four vocal soloists, a four-part choir and a Baroque chamber ensemble of up to three oboes of different kinds, strings and continuo.

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott was published in 1821, the first of Bach's cantatas published after his death. The Bach Gesellschaft edition appeared half a century later.

Gifts from the Heart

Gifts from the Heart (GFTH) is back again for its 33rd year at St. Michael’s!

The gift tags will be available starting Sunday, November 2, from 9:30 - 10 and 11:15 - 12.

We have 70 children, and 50 seniors and dependent adults. Please stop by to select your gift tag/s.

The program that provides Christmas gifts for children, seniors, and disabled adults began 38 years ago via the inspiration of a single CPS Social Worker. In 2025, multiple county agencies and community partners will bless over 3,000 people in Sacramento County with wonderful gifts. Each client’s social worker spends the time to learn what their clients need and desire and then shares that information with GFTH staff. Community partners like St. Michael’s do the rest until gifts are ready for pickup and delivery! This is such a fun and meaningful way to help our neighbors in need! They will experience a more joyful Christmas season because of our generosity.

Questions? Please direct any GFTH questions to Laura Quene or Holly Yue or contact the office.
