St. Michael's

Learns & Connects

Documentary & Discussion

Sunday March 26th 6pm

Friendship Center & Zoom

St. Michaels has the practice of gathering once a month, in person and on zoom, to watch a documentary together followed by lively discussion. Each month is a new topic typically focused around social justice topics, but occasionally, we throw in a curve ball.

All are invited to join us Sunday, March 26 at 6pm for this month’s Documentary and Discussion. We will be focusing on food consumption by way of a documentary called Let Us Be Heroes - The True Cost of our Food Choices. We will take a look at how our food choices affect how our bodies can be in the world. As is our practice, we will offer a light soup supper to enjoy while we watch the documentary together, followed by discussion. All are encouraged to join us. If you are joining by Zoom please follow this link.

Rise Against Hunger

This Saturday March 18th, 12pm - 2pm!

Parish and Johnstone Hall

Come pack meal bags that reach hungry people throughout the world. It is a very fun event and a great opportunity to gather as community to do something for those in need.

Last year we packed over 10,000 meals that went to support those in need in Nicaragua. This year we plan to pack over 15,000 meals! Come be a part of this super fun event!

There are still a few spots open! Please sign up on their website. If you have questions or need help please contact the office. If you are willing to help with set up or clean up please let us know!

Giving in Lent

In this season of Lent (beginning with Ash Wednesday, February 22) we have three opportunities for you to give to those in need.

Coat Collection

In our Palm Sunday reading this year, we hear of people paving Jesus' entering into Jerusalem with their cloaks and palm branches. We too, would like to pave the way for Jesus by collecting warm coats (and jackets) that will be given to those who need them at Starr King and the Center at St. Matthew's.

Starr King Hygiene Kits

Your are invited to support Starr King's 5th Grade hygiene unit by donating items for hygiene kits for the 90 students in the class. We did this last year and the students were thrilled to receive these items. Many of them are from different cultures and hygiene has been rather different for them previously. Pastor Katie created a Target Community Registry so it is even easier to participate either in store or online! Here is the link for the registry https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift/star-king-kitsFor how to use the registry please check out the directions here.

Items still needed are:

  • deodorant/antiperspirant
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • dental floss
  • shampoo
  • soap
  • body and face wash

Please note, items can be purchased from stores other than Target if preferred. If you have additional questions on the registry please talk to Pastor Katie or questions about the kits please talk to Dancy Dobrenick.

Easter Meal Gift Cards

As Easter approaches comes pleasant thoughts of a family gathering, including a special Easter dinner. We at St. Michael’s cherish such traditions. They’re revered. But what of those who, for whatever circumstance, lack the means to do something extra for an Easter dinner or worse confronted with no meal at all? Over the years, we’ve collected funds to purchase food gift cards to help these people our neighbors. At River City Food Bank and the St. Matthew’s Center these deserving people can be identified and helped - with your contributions.

If you wish to help out there are a couple of easy ways to do so. You can either contribute during church services with a donation in an envelope placed in the offering plate, or you can make your donation online using the Church's website stmichaelscarmichael.org. Be sure to identify your donation is for “food gift cards” and the church will do the rest. We’ll all feel we’ve done something worthy to spread the good cheer and joy that comes with Easter.

Piano Meditation

by John Cozza, Music Director

Larghetto from Piano Sonata #47 by Haydn

This week's Piano Meditation is a piece I discovered when studying the 62 (!) piano sonatas by Austrian composer Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809), looking for appropriate music for Preludes for the morning services. Nestled between the unremarkable F Major opening and closing movements was this diminutive f minor gem, so haunting and expressive in its mere two pages. Every time I hear or play it, it never fails to move me.
