"This Is The Kingdom: Wheat and Weeds "

Preacher: Pastor Ben Roberts
Worship Leader: Pastor Mark Stapleton

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 44:6-8
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30
There’s nothing more frustrating than finding weeds on your property. There’s nothing more exhausting than pulling them up…hopefully by the roots! There’s nothing more terrifying than pulling up weeds and, at the same time, plants you WANT to have growing! And Jesus knows this. As we continue our series, “This Is The Kingdom”, Jesus tells the story of the wheat and the weeds. He points out the unbelievable reaction of the Master to weeds growing among His wheat: leave it alone until the harvest. As “sons of the kingdom”, we may be tempted to seek out the “weeds” among us, both in the world and in the church, and pull them up by the roots! But our Lord urges patience, trusting that the situation will not be forever. Furthermore, we can still “shine like the sun/Son” in this present, evil age with the love, forgiveness and patience Jesus shows everyone through His death and resurrection.

CURRENT SERMON SERIES
This Is The Kingdom: God’s Ways Revealed in the Stories Jesus Tells

“And he told them many things in parables…” A “parable” is a story that Jesus tells to “make a comparison”, to show on the surface the deep riches of the reign of God. When Jesus tells stories, it is not just to make a point. It is to point to the hidden but altogether true reality that breaks forth in Him. These are some of the most beloved passages in the Bible, and for good reason: the reality they reveal impacts our daily lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. In this series, we will focus on these wonderful and challenging stories that Jesus tells, as we discover the “kingdom” of Jesus that is at work among us and through us.

  • 6/28: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 (The Wheat and the Weeds)
  • 7/5: Matthew 13:31-35 (The Mustard Seed and the Yeast)
  • 7/12 Matthew 13:44-46 (The Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price)
  • 7/19: Matthew 13:47-52 (The Net of Many Fish)

IN-PERSON WORSHIP RETURNS TO ST. JOHN'S!
Brothers and sisters in Christ, our "fast" from in-person worship due to the coronavirus pandemic is about to come to an end! With Illinois entering Phase 4 of the "Restore Illinois" plan, St. John's will once again be having in-person worship in our sanctuary. Just a few highlights:

  • Each worship service will be limited to 50 worshipers total, including those serving that weekend.

  • We will be diligent about ensuring your safety through social distancing protocols, such as the requirement of face masks and thorough disinfection between services.

  • We will be speaking responses and singing with masks on, but shortening the length of each.

  • To ensure we do not go over the 50 person total, online registration will be coming soon to let St. John's know which worship service you will attend: The 505 Contemporary Worship on Saturday at 5:05 PM or Traditional Worship on Sunday at 8:00 or 10:45 AM.

  • Worship Services will continue to be live-streamed, so if you are not quite ready to attend in-person worship, you can still participate in worship online.

  • More details forthcoming on Monday, June 29, 2020!

We thank you for your patience and generosity during this season at St. John's!
We look forward to seeing you soon at the corner of 47th and Brainard!

God's peace in our risen Lord,

Pastor Ben Roberts, Senior Pastor
Pastor Mark Stapleton, Associate Pastor

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP!
Dear Parents of St. John's High School Youth,

This Saturday, June 27, meet at 7:00 PM at Waiola Park ( 1 block away from St. John's on 47th Street).

What is the plan? Spend time together, play lawn darts, miscellaneous golf toss, badminton, and horseshoes; then head back to St. John's for time with God, and a treat. Your child needs to bring a water bottle, a chair, a mask, something to toss for the golf toss: beanbag, Frisbee, stuffed animal, etc…  Some equipment we have enough for each person to have their own; other items we will wipe them down after each person uses them.  We will be practicing social distancing by sitting six feet apart, have cleaning supplies, and hand sanitizer to keep everyone safe! Pick up would be at St. John's at 9:00 PM.

DATES TO SAVE: Plans coming for July 18 and August 8.

Any questions, please email Vicki Wykert at v.wykert@sjlagrange.com or text at 708-408-2759.

E-SUNDAY SCHOOL AT ST. JOHN'S
A LAME MAN WALKS!
The Book of Acts, Chapter 3

It was just another miserable day in this poor man's life as he sat helpless on the steps of the temple. He couldn't walk and had to be carried to the temple entrance where he begged for money from the crowd. Begging was the only way he could buy enough food to stay alive. d.When he saw Peter and John, he asked them for money, hoping for a few coins. Instead, Peter told him there was a gift much better than money he was about to receive. What did Peter mean? Our story is about the miracle that changed his life forever!

Lesson materials will be emailed to all Sunday School and Wednesday Bible School families. If you do not receive your package, contact Dalyne Shinneman at dalyne.shinneman@gmail.com or call 630-772-1688.
