"The Gospel According To David: The Power of Forgiveness"

Preacher: Senior Pastor Ben Roberts
Worship Leader: Associate Pastor Mark Stapleton
Old Testament: 2 Samuel 12:1-13
Second Reading: Romans 7:21 - 8:1
Holy Gospel: Matthew 9:1-8
Have you ever spent so much time building something, only to have it fall apart? A house of cards that topples at the slightest gust of wind? A building that topples during an earthquake? A life? Are there any structures that are built…and stay up forever? As we continue our series “The Gospel According To David”, King David seeks to build a “house” for the ark of the covenant…but the Lord has other “building” plans: “The Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house… And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever…” The “house” the Lord would build for David would be the very kingdom of His Son, Jesus, that not even the gates of Hades would overcome. In today’s day and age, when it feels like everything is shifting under our feet and crumbling, how comforting it is to know that we, as God’s “house”, live in a kingdom that will have no end!

The Gospel According To David

As we conclude our series “The Gospel According To David”, we come to a pivotal moment in King David’s life. Nathan the prophet is sent by the Lord to rebuke David of His adulterous sin with Bathsheba and his murderous sin with her husband Uriah. Faced with his sin and the certainty of death, what will David do? He confesses…and is forgiven by the Lord in an incredible moment of grace! Yet, David knew that the Lord is “gracious and merciful”; that is why, in faith, he repented. The same happens for us. The Lord knows our sinfulness and the payment for it: death. But trusting in the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”, we confess…and receive full forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus. You may think your sin is too “powerful” to be forgiven…but the power of forgiveness is stronger still!

Outrageous! The Stunning, Backwards, Upside-Down Grace of Jesus Christ

Some of the things that Jesus said really riled up some people up. Leave 99 sheep for one that is lost? Pay all workers the same, even though some had only been working one hour? Killing the son of the owner of the vineyard you’re working for? It had them saying, “Outrageous!” Why were they so upset? Because everything Jesus said pointed towards His grace for sinners. Those who were puffed up with pride in their own righteousness, blinded by their skewed beliefs and assured in their mockery of the “outcasts” of society…Jesus turned it all upside-down! And that is Good News for you and me! In this 6-week series, we will be looking at some of the “outrageous” things Jesus said that points to His “outrageous” grace He shows to us sinners through His death and resurrection. Each time, we will hear things Jesus says that have us shaking our heads…at how much He loves us and what He does to be with us and save us!

  • 9/5 & 9/6: Outrageous! Searching For The One (Matthew 18:1-20)
  • 9/12 & 9/13: Outrageous! All Debt Forgiven (Matthew 18:21-35)
  • 9/19 & 9/20: Outrageous! Equal Generosity (Matthew 20:1-16)
  • 9/26 & 9/27: Outrageous! A Tale Of Three Sons (Matthew 21:23-32)
  • 10/3 & 10/4: Outrageous! The Rejected Son And The Fruit He Bears (Matt. 21:33-46)
  • 10/10 & 10/11: Outrageous! Invitation To The Feast (Matthew 22:1-14)

"Thank You All!" from the Board of Stewardship. During these tough times, for those who have been financially able to donate money to St. John's normally spent on things like gas, dry cleaning, auto maintenance, car washes, haircuts and restaurants/entertainment...the church thanks you greatly! Your generosity is appreciated.

When Jesus' disciples heard Him say, "FOLLOW ME!", they left their homes and went with Him on a very exciting journey - they became the courageous messengers who spread His good news far and wide. These first Christians were ordinary people, but the Holy Spirit's power helped them do extraordinary things. Jesus calls us today, and we don't know what will happen when we follow Him, but it's bound to be exciting. The Bible tells us how to start our journey - let's get going!

Lesson materials will be emailed to all Sunday School and Wednesday Bible School families. If you do not receive your package, contact Dalyne Shinneman at or call 630-772-1688.
