"Outrageous! Searching For The One"

Preacher: Senior Pastor Ben Roberts
Worship Leader: Associate Pastor Mark Stapleton
Old Testament: Ezekiel 33:7-9
Second Reading: Romans 13:1-10
Holy Gospel: Matthew 18:1-20
Jesus tells a short story about a shepherd who leaves 99 sheep of his sheepfold to go after one stray lamb. Outrageous! Why should the shepherd care so much about a sheep that has gone astray? And yet…the shepherd does care. So much so, that when he finds it, he rejoices! As we begin our series “Outrageous!”, we will look at this short story of Jesus and how it points to His outrageous search for you and me, sinners who went astray. His search was so intense it took Him to the cross, where He died a death He did not deserve, for a salvation we do not deserve. How outrageous…and wonderful…is our Shepherd who searches for sinners!

Outrageous! The Stunning, Backwards, Upside-Down Grace of Jesus Christ

Some of the things that Jesus said really riled up some people up. Leave 99 sheep for one that is lost? Pay all workers the same, even though some had only been working one hour? Killing the son of the owner of the vineyard you’re working for? It had them saying, “Outrageous!” Why were they so upset? Because everything Jesus said pointed towards His grace for sinners. Those who were puffed up with pride in their own righteousness, blinded by their skewed beliefs and assured in their mockery of the “outcasts” of society…Jesus turned it all upside-down! And that is Good News for you and me! In this 6-week series, we will be looking at some of the “outrageous” things Jesus said that points to His “outrageous” grace He shows to us sinners through His death and resurrection. Each time, we will hear things Jesus says that have us shaking our heads…at how much He loves us and what He does to be with us and save us!

Our Third Graders at St. John's are collecting chapel offerings for the month of September for La Grange Area Food Pantry. Throughout the school year, our class will purchase items from chapel offerings collected in September to donate to the food pantry.

You can help, too!
The Pantry is in need of regular sized canned goods that a family can use (not restaurant-sized containers) especially canned corn and canned beans, size 4 diapers, cereal, pasta, and non-food items which are not covered by Snap or Link cards. We will be collecting items at our next Meals To Go on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 1:00 PM. Each month we have a featured item to shop for. We look forward to serving God through our Food Pantry donations, and helping people in need in our community. Thank you!

September’s featured item will be: SHAMPOO.
