"The Gospel According To David: Humble?"

Preacher: Senior Pastor Ben Roberts
Worship Leader: Associate Pastor Mark Stapleton
Old Testament: 2 Samuel 6:12-23
Second Reading: Philippians 2:2-11
Holy Gospel: Matthew 22:41-46
There’s a difference between “humble” and “humiliating”. If you find something “humiliating”, it means that it is beneath you, something you would never think of doing. But being “humble” means you DELIBERATELY do something that, though lowly, will reap great benefits. As we continue our series “The Gospel According To David”, we find King David dancing before the ark, wearing only a linen ephod. Michel, Saul’s daughter and David’s wife, finds this “humiliating” for the king of Israel! But David points out his “humility” and the blessings that he has received from the Lord. David’s actions point to another King, who looked “humiliating” as He died upon the cross. But Jesus was “humbling Himself, taking on the form of a servant”, so that we would receive the blessings of forgiveness of sin and a “humble mind” towards others.

The Gospel According To David

King David is often portrayed as a spiritual giant, a great king and a caring shepherd. From writing beloved Psalms to conquering mighty enemies, David is often held up as a great example of faithful living. But when you look at the stories of David’s life, you see not an example of faithful living; you see a faithful God who gives David everything by His grace. In this 6 week series, “The Gospel According To David”, we will look at some of those stories and see that the Lord almighty was working in and through His sinful, chosen King, to make David an example of the glorious grace that He shows to all sinners. We will also see how the life of David ultimately points to God’s grace that He shows us in our true King, Jesus Christ, and His love, strength and power that He shows through His death and resurrection.

The Garden of Eden was an amazing place! Everything there was perfect, and Adam and Eve were very happy and content. But there was a commandment they needed to obey - one of the trees in the garden was off limits. God said, "I have given you everything in the garden to eat except the fruit of this tree. You may not eat it - if you do, I will be very angry, and you will be punished!" At first Adam and Eve obeyed God's commandment and life in the garden was as wonderful as ever, until a crafty serpent caused some big trouble . . . .
